WP:FILMS Welcome

Welcome!

Hey, welcome to WikiProject Films! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of films, awards, festivals, filmmaking, and film characters. If you haven't already, please add {{User WikiProject Films}} to your user page.

A few features that you might find helpful:

  • Most of our important discussions about the project itself and its related articles take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.

There is a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Want to jump right into editing? The style guidelines show things you should include.
  • Want to assist in some current backlogs within the project? Visit the Announcements template to see how you can help.
  • Want to know how good our articles are? Our assessment department has rated the quality of every film article in Wikipedia. Check it out!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! Nehrams2020 (talk) 18:23, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not my decision I listed it as a possible copyvio, but I personally do not know if it is, nor do I get to decide that; it's a matter of law. If no one else is discussing it or objecting, I suppose you can take off the tag if you want. —Justin (koavf)TCM19:30, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My artwork

Thanks. How long it takes depends on the drawing. Each of the figures in the sketchbooks (the ones with the muscles) can take, I dunno, maybe a half hour or more, depending on the size? They were all drawn from photos. With the Temple of Jupiter, the undersketch, which I did on-site, took about 90 min, IIRC, but putting the detail when I got back to the States probably took all day. Designing the caricatures doesn't take long. I got the Sarah Silverman one with the second prelim sketch, and then it was just a matter of drawing it big. I'm not going to put recent artwork on my page, though, because after putting those up, I discovered that Talk Pages are not supposed to be for that, and I'm even thinking of taking them down. If you want to see more recent stuff, go to www.myspace.com/luiginovi, and send me a Friend Request. I post new stuff in my blog. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 17:52, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reproducing deleted material

Hello If the user is belligerent, I would post on WP:AN/I. If the user is willing to listen to reason, encourage him to make a subpage (e.g. User:Example/Igangsta Productions) and find sources to verify that this is a noteworthy subject. Either way, posting on his talk about the use of verifiable sources is probably a good idea. —Justin (koavf)TCM20:01, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kick-Ass Revert

The revert on the Kick-Ass was unneccessary as the information I posted was factual and up to date. I made sure to warn potential readers that the information posted might contain spoilers so as to avoid ruining plot material for people. I also refrenced my source so I'm not sure why you chose to replace it with news that was older and not up to date.

Kick Ass Revert cont.

I put "Major Spoilers!!!" only because the information revealed in the casting news contains facts on characters that have not yet appeared in the comic, and someone reading the article migh be caught offgaurd finding out information they would consider "spoiler-ish". I'm not sure if there is a better way to warn people of spoilers as I'm relatively new to editing articles.

Wikipedia has previously included such warnings in some articles on works of fiction. However, since it is generally expected that the subjects of our articles will be covered in detail, such warnings are largely considered unnecessary. Therefore, Wikipedia no longer carries spoiler warnings, except for section headings (such as "Plot" or "Ending") which imply the presence of spoilers. —— RyanLupin(talk) 16:57, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you revert my edit here to this article with huggle? According to WP:Huggle, "Huggle is a tool for dealing with vandalism." There was no vandalism in that edit, I even included an edit summary which explained my reasoning for removing the link. If you believed that the link belonged there then you shouldn't have used Huggle to revert and instead replaced it yourself with a non-automated edit summary. 66.177.175.115 (talk) 17:35, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please be careful when reverting vandalism whilst using huggle. Your access to the tool and your rollback flag will be revoked if you persist in reverting perfectly legitimate editions. —— RyanLupin(talk) 18:04, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help

{{helpme}} Does any body know if I can put a messase out to people involved with WikiProject Films?

Someone, probably you, requested access to the account creation tool. For security purposes could you please confirm that it was you who made the request so we can approve you, thanks. —— RyanLupin(talk) 15:45, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for applying to access the account creation tool. I have approved your request. You may now access the tool here. Before you do so, please read the tool's guide to familiarize yourself with the process. You may also want to join #wikipedia-en-accounts on irc and/or the mailing list. Keep in mind that the ACC tool is a powerful program, and misuse may result in your access being suspended by a tool administrator. Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions. Thank you for participating in the account creation process. —— RyanLupin(talk) 16:38, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the message you left on my talk page about applying for the 'accountcreator' flag, being granted access to the ACC tool doesn't automatically assign you with the account creator right. You are only flagged if you keep hitting the maximum 6 accounts a day quota. Once you've shown evidence of a desire to help with the account creation process, you can apply for the flag at WP:PERM, however, like I said above, only after you've hitten the maximum 6 accounts limit on a regular basis, regards —— RyanLupin(talk) 16:40, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please Help

{{helpme}}

I am trying to add pictures to the article List of documentary films, The first picture want is the poster from the film Fahrenheit 911 found here [1]. I have searched commons by typing in "Fahrenheit 911 poster"(this is what the .jpg is called) and I am unable to find it. This is my first time for adding pictures to an article, What am I doing wrong?--Theoneintraining (talk) 00:29, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's not on commons. And it shouldn't be, since the image is copyrighted and is being used under a claim of fair use. The image can be included somewhere by simply adding [[Image:Fahrenheit 911 poster.jpg]] to the page you want to add it to. However, note that since this is a copyrighted image, you'll need to justify your use of it in any article other than the one it is currently used on, Fahrenheit 9/11. Mangojuicetalk 03:46, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Simple. The whole filename is case-sensitive. The file on commons is "Ford mustang AV8ER.jpg"; the image you tried to add to the article was "Ford mustang AV8ER.JPG" - the difference is the capitals in ".JPG", which should have been ".jpg". Oh, and remember to sign your talk page comments by adding ~~~~ after them. Cheers! Mangojuicetalk 04:00, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help Please

{{helpme}} I can not work out why the picture for the documentary Born into Brothels I am trying to add to List of documentary films#B is not working. Can somebody please help me out here.--Theoneintraining (talk) 06:54, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at the image you're trying to add to the article, there doesn't appear to be an article in the path you're using as you can see here. Perhaps it was corrupted during upload? Consider re-uploading and try adding it again. If you require further assistance, don't hesitate to ask —— RyanLupin(talk) 10:30, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looking over the article you're working on, the only concern I have is that the images you are using are non-free images and to be added to list articles for decoration purposes violates our image policy (WP:NFCC). I'm sorry to have to say this after you've spent so much time on the article. Have a read through our image policy to gain an insight into when to use images. —— RyanLupin(talk) 10:59, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Depending on the image, some have their own rationale justifying their inclusion within certain articles. It also depends on the article, some images are allowed to be included. However, when there are replaceable images available, non-free images cannot be used —— RyanLupin(talk) 11:44, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Answer to question

Actually a couple sections above you an Ip came up with a solution of this:[2] which works really well. Kates wannabe editor does somehow find the unique article count so my guess is somewhere in that tool is both a list of the unique articles and possibly an edit count for each one. My whole purpose is to find old articles I may have tagged for something and forgot about to go back and check on to see if they've been cleaned up/improved/etc. So ideally I'm looking to find my unique list and sort it by edits so I can find articles that I've only edited less than 5 times or so which would probably indicate an article I was tagging as opposed to working on.--Crossmr (talk) 22:01, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Spoken Wikipedia

Spoken Wikipedia articles aren't usually removed. They explicitly state what version they're made off and if there's no replacement, having an old version is better than none at all (for people with seeing disabilities this is commonly used by). Please try getting a replacement instead. - Mgm|(talk) 12:51, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Check it again. It wasn't useless, it was just not coded correctly. I forgot to put a colon in front of "Category", thus, when I linked the page for you it became a category on the film project page, instead of an inner link to the actual listing. I fixed it.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 16:16, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I was also wondering about the norm of a few other things. Is it common to respond to someone's comment on your talk page or their's? And in leaving messages, what are the instances of spacing (such as you not leaving a space between my message and yours), and of using colons throughout an entire section (as in continuing the colons all the way through even with things that may be unrelated)? 71.176.90.237 (talk) 14:54, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there, you can leave a message on either that users talk page, or your own talk page, but you probably want to use {{talkback}} if you have posted the comment on your talk page to make users alert of this. In response to leaving spaces between a message, you should indent your message with a colon, so if a user has indented with one colon, : then add another one to make 2 :: etc. Hope this helps! The Helpful One 14:58, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Generally the person responding to a question reply's where the question was first asked. Leaving a message on somebody's talk page will alert them that they have a new message so it is a good way of getting their attention. On the edit page you should not really add additional space's and reply to comment should start on the left hand side (as with these replys).--intraining Jack In 15:10, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of Doc films

I will try to help on this when I get a chance. For one thing the film titles need to be italicized and I may get started on that soon but, just so you know, at the moment I am not spending as much time on WikiP as usual. Mostly I am checking my watchlist and that is about it and this will probably last thru the holidays.

If you want to add the producer of each film you may want to think about converting the page to table form something along the lines of this [3]. I will warn you up front that I don't know how to design these but I can work with ones that others have designed. With this you could have a column for - year - film title - director - producer - and maybe one other item like country of origin. This is just a suggestion so please don't feel that you have to do something like this. Also don't be afraid to mess around with things in a sandbox until you get something that you like before you get going on the page in earnest. Regards. MarnetteD | Talk 22:27, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your message. The actual reason I've been adding films to that page is because I keep finding orphaned articles on documentary films with few or no incoming links - adding them to that list ensures that they'll have at least one link. But I can see that the list needs some work, and I'd be happy to help if it gets it raised to featured quality. Sorry for the slightly late reply. Terraxos (talk) 15:05, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your response. I thought that was the case. Life is a bit busy at present so I am only pottering here every now and then. However Australian literature and film (partic docos) are my main areas of interest. What would you like me to do? If you can give me a small finite part to work on and tell me what you want I'll give it a go.Sterry2607 (talk) 09:23, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Welcoming

Hello, do you know if you sign talk pages with {{subst:welcome}} or a capitalized {{subst:Welcome}}? I know it may not matter, but I want to be spot on to the exact way it is said. Actually, this is for Wikia, so if you know how they would do it there, tell me. 168.170.198.40 (talk) 18:19, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, It does not matter about the capital W it will work either way. I am unsure if this will work on Wikia as I have no experience there at all, So I don't know how they do it there. Wikipedia has a reference desk that can be used to ask any question you like that is not related to English Wikipedia found here. Feel free to give it a go if you are really stuck.--intraining Jack In 19:13, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List

Sure ... that's what I meant to do ... actually didn't realise I'd done it in mainspace. Clicked on a link and didn't check which one it was. Silly, silly me. Do I now have to redo that stuff??Sterry2607 (talk) 11:19, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User page

Hi. Yes I wrote that. By all means use it. This site has massive potential, and I have a great number of ideas for how to build it. Just a shame that Jimbo doesn't listen to my ideas in how to build content on here, otherwise we would be several million articles better off by now, no kidding. Money is a problem but that would be the last thing we'd want to happen to wikipedia. If it was run by google you can be guaranteed that it would not be a "free" encyclopedia and I bet that it would do your head in seeing commercial adverts for mobile phones for example popping up while you are reading on article on Henry I. It would be disastrous to see work you have created and spent a lot of time with now being used for profit by some web glutton like goole. Aside from this wikipedia should increasingly be in a position where it is recognised by major institutions (recently the presentation by the German archives of 100,000 images from German history to the wiki commons) so that we don't have to pay 300 bucks for images. Free content for celebrities that is of a high quality can be quite difficult to obtain but only last week I found a free good image of Clint Eastwood which I cropped into the infobox. Wikipedia should be funded by the US government I think anyway and become more of a professional institution with proper research team and those who go about contacting people to use images or to obtain special information from sources around the world. Mr. Wales may insist they need the money for servers but a lot of money should be put into proper research rather than continously relying on scraps form millions of people I think anyway. License tagging for File:Danni minogue.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Danni minogue.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

Huggle

I don't hate Huggle. I was one of the first to use Huggle, I put a ton of effort into developing a process to approve/deny Huggle for users, (way back when Gurch left and we had to come up with a way to distribute Huggle), I distributed Huggle to many of the people using it now. My comment with the IP was out of frustration, because I got an instantaneous Huggle warning for an edit I didn't think was vandalism. I've made about 4,000 edits using Huggle myself. It's an extremely useful tool and the project owes a great debt to Gurch for developing it. link. I can also direct you to the barnstars I gave Gurch for developing it. message for Ecoleetage

Hi Eco, I was just reading through your RfA and it seems to be going very well for you so far. I had nothing to do so I thought I would make you a raw signature Ecoleetage, you don't have to use it if you don't want or you don't like it, I was getting a bit bored at home by myself. Good Luck.--intraining Jack In 01:16, 15 January 2009 (UTC) [reply]

That was very thoughtful of you...thanks. Can you do something similar in the Mozambique colours? Cheers! Ecoleetage (talk) 01:28, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ecoleetage, I used the red, teal, black but instead of yellow I used a orangey kind of color because yellow is far to bright and distracting.--intraining Jack In 01:47, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That is nice. What do you say that I go full-colour in the event I pass the audition? :) Ecoleetage (talk) 01:50, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well so far so good, lets hope for the sake of the pedia the % stays above the line, all the best.--intraining Jack In 01:58, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ecoleetage, I don't know if you are watching this page or not, I fixed it so each colour (except Red) have three letters each. You know to keep things even.--intraining Jack In 20:45, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
