Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Lhasa

I believe the record on the Talk page should show the name that the article had when the move was requested. If you change that, you're changing the historical record in a confusing way. The move request did not request a move from the current name – it requested a move from the old name. —BarrelProof (talk) 02:18, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Why posting this in my talk page? I don't remember requesting a rename. What was the old title? --George Ho (talk) 02:42, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, I meant to add a link to the page I was talking about. I'm referring to Talk:If Tomorrow I Were Leaving for Lhasa, I Wouldn't Stay a Minute More... (which, until an hour or two ago, was at Talk:"If Tomorrow I Were Leaving for Lhasa, I Wouldn't Stay a Minute More...). —BarrelProof (talk) 03:03, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
Don't ask me; ask FokkerTISM. He added just one mark by mistake; he probably intended to add two. --George Ho (talk) 03:09, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
No, he didn't. Please see the article history. The title of the article actually had a quote mark in the left side of the title and no matching quote mark in the right side of the title. Note that the requested move template puts the title in the move request automatically, so it can't be a typing error. The bot put that title there, not FokkerTISM. Please also see the remarks in the move discussion. The remarks specifically comment on the strange quote mark that was in the title (but is not there anymore). —BarrelProof (talk) 04:30, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
You didn't even ask in either talk page. --George Ho (talk) 05:36, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
It wasn't any bot that put the " there. It was me. I tried to move the album to its correct title of "If tomorrow I were leaving for Lhasa, I wouldn't stay a minute more..", but I accidentally pressed Enter a bit early. FokkerTISM 09:31, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Thriller

Before you redirect to the disambiguation, you should make sure that, so as not to disrupt the readers' experience, most of the internal links to Thriller (album) are changed to Thriller (Michael Jackson album) first! (there might be a few that are intended for a different Thriller album) This is what Tbhotch is so upset about at the redirect for discussion, and rightfully so. I was surprised that this cleanup wasn't done after the last RM for Thriller. In fact, truly good editor behavior would have been to change the links before even proposing the move. This is a lot of work as there are hundreds of such pages, but I've found that WP:AWB makes it go a lot faster. I'll help out. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wbm1058 (talkcontribs) 00:13, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

Can I just ask why you added the picture to the nomination? - JuneGloom Talk 21:52, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

Possibly to make the hook a lead hook and more interesting. The picture is of the portrayer and relevant, so we'll let the promoter decide. --George Ho (talk) 22:00, 6 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I was just curious. That picture is not particularly brilliant, which is why I didn't add it. Plus, since the article is about a fictional character there's little to no chance of it being the top hook on the day it goes to the main page. Fictional characters usually get placed in the middle or at the bottom. - JuneGloom Talk 20:51, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
If it is a lead in the DYK main page, I would say that I'm gleeful to see my partial work accomplished. --George Ho (talk) 05:38, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

Your "future contributions"

Just to be clear George, since you will obviously have read what I reverted, and I have obviously read what you posted elsewhere - I have unwatchlisted anything to do with you, and I will steer clear of anything you are involved with. I came across your "A" for Aardvark, "B" for Billy debacle not through following you, but purely by chance, believe it or not. That's the truth.

Next time I see your username I'll go nowhere near it - that's a promise. I think you're on a wrong path, and I'm personally extraordanarily disappointed at basically having all the effort I put into helping you over a long period flung back in my face - but that really is the last you'll hear from me. Until you listen to the people who say things you don't want to hear as well as the people who say things you do, you'll continue to have problems. Good luck though, and I genuinely mean that. Cheers, the remaining series

Hello, I created the Cheers season 9 page and was wondering if I should create the pages to season 10 and 11. I saw that you updated the page I created and was wondering if I could have some help because I'm a new to the whole editing and creating pages process.TheMiddleOrder (talk) 17:53, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

Umm... I recommend that you let me do these seasons, please. Although I am not preventing you from editing (or creating) them, you are totally new, so, if you insist on creating an article, use WP:article wizard as you are a new editor. --George Ho (talk) 22:47, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

Re: File:Brad Fiedel - 1994 - The Terminator The Definite Edition.jpg

Duly noted, and done. I'm not sure about the merge, though. I've always steered clear of getting involved with that stuff. If other editors feel the need, I just let them handle it. The same has happened with at least one of my previous soundtrack articles before, but it's not a big deal to me. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 14:25, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Hello. Yes, please remove it. That was originally added before when there was only a shoddy looking DVD cover. I love the look of this poster, but use the original country poster in this case. Remove any DVD covers too when needed. Andrzejbanas (talk) 20:12, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Your submission at Articles for creation: Out of Athens (October 25)

Thank you for your recent submission to Articles for Creation. Your article submission has been reviewed. Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. Please view your submission to see the comments left by the reviewer. You are welcome to edit the submission to address the issues raised, and resubmit if you feel they have been resolved.

You seem to be a highly experienced editor yourself - I don't really understand why you are using AfC. But from my point of view the sourcing doesn't seem to be very strong, though the claims of winning awards suggests there should be something reliable out there to support the article. Non-free rationale for File:Treehouse of Horror TV Guide 1990.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Treehouse of Horror TV Guide 1990.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. I'm not an administrator. Also, from looking at history log, it looks like a dispute, not vandalism. Well, I'll give you a warm welcome anyway. However, it doesn't seem persistent or warred over. George Ho (talk) 07:04, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Removing valid tags

Please do not continue to remove valid tags from images as you keep doing at File:Brandy Ray J family business print ad.jpg. The file is orphaned and so should be tagged appropriately. --AussieLegend () 19:03, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

I did request that the bot not tag "orphaned" files as "orphaned" as long as they are reviewed or under deletion discussion. --George Ho (talk) 19:04, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
Since you nominated the image as FFD, can you at least remove the "DI-orphan" tag, so the image would be kept longer without being tagged for speedy deletion (or something like that)? --George Ho (talk) 19:21, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
The file was only nominated because you stubbornly keep removing the orphan tag, which has been appropriately added to the article. --AussieLegend () 19:32, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
I guess NFCR is useless if the file's nominated for deletion. I closed the NFCR to reduce redundancy to the FFD. Concurrently tagged as FFD and "eligible for speedy deletion as orphaned file" doesn't make sense, and it robs people's chances to be curious about this image. George Ho (talk) 19:40, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
As indicated at WP:NFCR, it is "a place where Wikipedians discuss whether media without free content licenses are in compliance with Wikipedia's non-free content criteria." It's not a place for gaining consensus to keep orphaned non-free media (that just won't happen) or to use it in place of other non-free media. If you had not persistently removed the orphan tag there would have been no need to nominate it for deletion. That was a safeguard against an editor who is disrupting the normal Wikipedia process. --AussieLegend () 19:51, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
What is the "normal" process? George Ho (talk) 19:53, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
George, the problem appears to be not that the image fails the NFCC criteria, but that AussieLegend believes the image shouldn't be used in the article. You have not contested this. As such, the NFCR/FFD discussion processes are unnecessary. You should only need to bother with them if you plan on contesting that the image should be in the article instead of the title card. Magog the Ogre (tc) 14:59, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
I did nominate the banner first, and he nominated the promo ad then. We've come this far, and seems to me that one of them will be gone. I haven't heard of you trying to remove the "orphan" tag from the image page while the image is nominated. Will you do so as an administrator? George Ho (talk) 16:11, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
That's not actually correct George. The actual order was:
  1. 21:39, 2 November 2013 (UTC) - You opened an RfC at WT:TV about the suitability of different images for the infobox, where you're getting no support.
  2. 02:10, 3 November 2013 (UTC) - I nominated File:Brandy Ray J family business print ad.jpg for deletion by tagging it as an orphaned image.
  3. 02:20, 3 November 2013 (UTC) - After unsuccessfully trying to get the orphan tag removed, you opened a discussion at NFCR (which shouldn't have happened, for the reasons I explained earlier)
  4. 02:42, 3 November 2013 (UTC) - For some reason, you chose to nominate File:BRafamily.PNG while the NFCR discussion was in progress and was only 22 minutes old.
  5. 18:56, 3 November 2013 (UTC) - You removed the orphan tag again.
  6. 19:08, 3 November 2013 (UTC) - I nominated File:Brandy Ray J family business print ad.jpg because you kept inappropriately removing the orphan tag from the file, in an attempt to stop it from being deleted, as a way of notifying others of your actions.
Ideally, you should have enquired at WT:TV before any of this about the suitability prior to making changes. Note, I said "enquired". There's no need, nor is it appropriate, to go straight to RfC as you so often do. Remember, I mentioned this at Talk:Terra Nova (TV series) when you went straight to RfC without discussion in the middle of another RfC.[1] You did this again recently at Talk:Cheers (season 1),[2] then closed that RfC[3] and opened another only 3 hours later.[4] When I first added the orphan tag to File:Brandy Ray J family business print ad.jpg you should have started a discussion on the article's talk page about using the print ad instead of the banner. Or, better still, you could have waited for the RfC outcome. There was really no need for #3-6, or any of the above steps really. If the RfC had ended up supporting use of print ads, you could always upload the image again. --AussieLegend () 20:12, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Image formats

Regarding this rather pointless change, please read Wikipedia talk:Image use policy#JPEG vs PNG again. As explained in that discussion, the formats specified by WP:IUP are guidelines, they're not hard and fast rules. Please try to concentrate on adding images where none exist, not replacing one non-free image with another or unnecessarily changing formats. --AussieLegend () 18:02, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

IUP is a policy, not a guideline. If you want to downgrade it to guideline, propose it if you can. --George Ho (talk) 18:06, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
Policies are not hard and fast rules that have to be blindly obeyed. They have to be applied with a modicum of common sense, which is one of the reasons we have WP:IAR. The section of IUP that deals with formats is headed "Rules of thumb". A rule of thumb is simply a guideline that is not intended to be strictly accurate or reliable for every situation. That is reflected in the discussion on the article's talk page. --AussieLegend () 03:44, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, well.... images are easily distributed digitally, thanks to computers and downloads. Simply we can use crappy JPEG to just minimize the impact on the copyright (or the distribution uses of the copyright owners). Therefore, if enlarged from original size, the image could go crappy; if shrunk, ... well, you don't want to shrink and then enlarge. An image as a whole can be used commercially or editorially, and Wikipedia doesn't want to afford any more licenses on non-free images. Instead, as long as an unlicensed use qualifies as "fair use", we can upload images without need of a license. Or you can replace the non-free image with the free image. Recently, I uploaded a pile of seven photos and replaced non-free screenshot in film still page. George Ho (talk) 03:53, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

You have made repeated changes to MOS:LAW. Under WP:BRD one should be bold and make the change. When someone disagrees, the other person will revert your edit. At this point, the issue should be discussed on the talk page. You don't go back and change the guideline again, especially when the issue you are changing was recently added by the consensus community. state of technical move

I moved your move request into contested technical moves. I am not sure how I would !vote in a potential move discussion, I could see my self agreeing with your position, but this is not a mere technical move, and the move history of this article has already been controversial and been reverted multiple times. This move should be discussed on the article talk. Gaijin42 (talk) 22:27, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Information icon Hello. It appears that you have been canvassing—leaving messages on a biased choice of users' talk pages to notify them of an ongoing community decision, debate, or vote—in order to influence United States v. Microsoft Corp.. While friendly notices are allowed, they should be limited and nonpartisan in distribution and should reflect a neutral point of view. Please do not post notices which are indiscriminately cross-posted, which espouse a certain point of view or side of a debate, or which are selectively sent only to those who are believed to hold the same opinion as you. Remember to respect Wikipedia's principle of consensus-building by allowing decisions to reflect the prevailing opinion among the community at large. Like to know what you intend to do

With Rupert Sheldrake please.

I know the article structure isn't the best, but the content is sourced and appropriate per WP:FRINGE.

The talk page is quite heated due to the persistence of some of Sheldrake's fans who object to the application of Wikipedia policies.

You will have to be reverted if you introduce any edits that are counterproductive.

Thanks for your understanding - I'd appreciate at least a brief reply. Barney the barney barney (talk) 15:34, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

I just had to add "under construction" tag because I recently saw conflict. I wasn't aware of the situation or the living person himself until now. I add tags to just raise awareness for any reader not familiar with editing issues. Also, I tag the BLP/N tag in talk page to raise awareness for those solely interested. George Ho (talk) 15:42, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Correct me if I'm wrong but the template is to take temporary WP:OWNership of an article for editing, for a major rewrite or restructuring. Now, I don't think we've come across each other before. I doubt however that you can add much new content to the article. This is because I have systematically been through the sources (including the Guardian/Observer archive which is behind a paywall), and know the sources I've missed are not easily accessible (such as articles in New Scientist from the 1980s).
The alternative, i.e. restructuring, would be OK - as long as it's an improvement.
Finally, while there is dispute, it is mostly limited to whinging on the talk page by his fans, who generally don't have a good understanding of science or Wikipedia policies. The actual content dispute is mostly focussed on a few words in the lead.
I apologise for the talk page, which has got beyond reasonable discussion, as unfortunately any attempt to do so descends into an argument as creative interpretations of cherry picked sources, usually of dubious quality. Barney the barney barney (talk) 16:02, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
The template documentation didn't mention ownership. It says to use it "for articles actively undergoing construction." As for his "fans", I can sense conflict of interest, correct? George Ho (talk) 16:07, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, I meant WP:OWN in a sort of euphemistic way. I know you can't take control of an article long term because of WP:OWN, but if you want to rewrite it it helps if people fix your spelling after you've made your revisions to avoid any edit conflicts.
I'm not aware specifically of any COI editing here. To be fair to Sheldrake, he's said in a recent radio piece that editing your own article was "not the done thing", so I don't think he's done that. The biggest problem to me is that anyone familiar with science, and in particular with current scientific theories, sociology of science and history of science, is not going to be particularly impressed by Sheldrake's ideas which means those that are impressed are lacking the ability to fully understand.
"Fans" writing articles isn't necessarily a problem; fans of many popular music bands or sports teams or politicians can and do write about them neutrally. It's not just fans, it's fans of a fringe issue, IMHO. Barney the barney barney (talk) 16:41, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Well, I can remove citations from the lede because... recent Featured Articles omit them in ledes, like the Jefferson nickel. The rest is yours to handle, along with "fringe" crap. I worry more about templates and images than some person I barely know. And I worry about entertainment circle more than anything else. I can recommend you to read Sam and Diane and The Joy Luck Club (film) just for entertainment and to take break from some... guy well-notable for biochemistry-related works. Or yet, watch Fringe (TV series) and the article. George Ho (talk) 16:52, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

We tried to remove cites from the leade before but some of the aforementioned fans have a habit of denying that such sources even exist, and hence the criticism is unsourced. I agree with your suggestion, btw. This article has far too much attention lavished upon it, which given its lack of scientific relevance, it doesn't deserve. Better to go to writing biographies of slightly obscure dead people, I think. Barney the barney barney (talk) 17:56, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Can I at least remove them from lede right now, BTW? George Ho (talk) 17:59, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Template requests at RFPP

Hi George, I notice you've been listing a lot of templates at RFPP lately for template protection. While there's nothing necessarily wrong with that, I think you might be focusing on the wrong areas. If you look here you can find a number of templates with 20,000+ transclusions that are semi-protected. I'd prefer if you focused your efforts on high-visibility templates like that instead of ones with only a few thousand transclusions. Thanks, Mark Arsten (talk) 23:24, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

Protection requests

I've noticed that you've had a lot of declined requests at RFPP, in multiple namespaces. Perhaps you should read up on the protection policy or consider focusing on another area of the encyclopedia. If you have any questions, I'm happy to help you with them. John Reaves 20:26, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

How do you tell which needs semi-protection or "pending changes", especially on BLP? --George Ho (talk) 20:28, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
Repeated edits that violate the BLP policy are often best dealt with by blocking. However, if the edits are coming from multiple anonymous users, then it is time to protect. When I and (I'm assuming) most admins say "persistent" vandalism/disruption we are referring to multiple edits over the course of a short period of time (let's say 10 in an hour or 50 in a day for example). When it is no longer effective to simply revert, we protect. This is usually the result of a recent event involving the subject of the article or meatpuppetry from an external source. I hope this clarifies some things for you John Reaves 20:37, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
What about unconfirmed registered editors, who edit BLPs? And other pages? George Ho (talk) 20:38, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
If their edits are obviously malicious, you report them to AIV after warning them. If they seem to have good faith, you welcome them and try to help them edit in accordance with policy. John Reaves 20:41, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

I think it's kind of valuable to have both covers up, because the cover I uploaded is the first to show what Roger's face looks like AFAIK, plus it gives a different presentation of valiant, shaven like he ends up being for the most part in the animated film. This cover was probably a strong influence for that. Ranze (talk) 19:42, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Ranze, the article doesn't say anything about differentiation of two covers. I hope you find reliable sources covering two such covers. I'll refrain from nominating the image for deletion in one week. But I'll nominate the image if the article does not describe both covers in prose. George Ho (talk) 20:29, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

GAR request for PPACA

Hello, I was hoping to discuss your GAR requests on Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Per WP:GAR, when making a GAR request for a community assessment, the requester is to 1) "Append your reason for bringing the article to good article reassessment, sign it, and save the page"; 2) "notify the most recent GA reviewer"; 3) notify "major contributing editors ... and relevant WikiProjects". The reason I want to bring this to your attention is because I haven't seen you take any of these steps when making the GAR request. Knowing your reason for the request would be particularly helpful, given that this article has only had GA status for a few weeks now and hasn't changed much since the initial determination. Also, WP:GAR states that "Requesting reassessment during a content dispute or edit war is usually inappropriate, wait until the article stabilizes and then consider reassessment." Right now, the article is under full protection from a content dispute, so you should probably wait to make your request until that's hashed out. Regardless, taking the other steps would be much appreciated. Thanks. –Prototime (talk · contribs) 04:34, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi George,

Well, I'm sorry I didn't understand very well your question. It seems that your article lacks of an introduction to the readers, a summarization of the achievements he won, where is his birthplace, when he was born, etc. If you have some information of his early life you can add that as well also an infobox. FairyTailRocks (talk) 04:28, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
Well you can give the year of it's birth e.g. c. [year]. He can be notable if he has been published by sources that is reliable, but WP:ANYBIO says "the person has received a well-known and significant award or honor, or has been nominated for one several times" is counted as notable. It can be if it meets the first rule. FairyTailRocks (talk) 04:49, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
But in my opinion, since he has been involved in many movies he can be notable. FairyTailRocks (talk) 04:52, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
Well it clearly fails ANYBIO's first criteria but these are some additional criteria, Wikipedia:Notability (people)#Additional criteria says a person who fails to meet these additional criteria may still be notable under notability. Just like what I've said earlier at WP:BASIC, he can be notable if has been publish by reliable sources. FairyTailRocks (talk) 05:10, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
As I search his recent movie was in 2011 and that film has won some awards and it was a box office hit. He can still be notable. FairyTailRocks (talk) 05:19, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
