Kula Gotralu (Telugu: కులగోత్రాలు; English: Caste & Clans) is a 1962 Telugu drama film, produced by A. V. Subba Rao under the Prasad Art Pictures banner and directed by K. Pratyagatma. It stars Akkineni Nageshwara Rao, Krishna Kumari in the lead roles and music composed by S. Rajeswara Rao. The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu certificate of merit in 1963.[1] The Telugu veteran actor Krishna played a sidekick role in the movie before entering into the industry.

Plot

Zamindar Bhushaiah (Gummadi) à paterfamilias who adhere to caste & clan and holds high esteem by the villagers, lives life with his wife Shantamma (Nirmalamma), two daughters Jagadamba (Suryakantham) & Leela (Girija) and a son Ravi (Akkineni Nageswara Rao). Actually, Jagadamba is the step-daughter to Shantamma that's why Jagadamba always shows resent. Bhushaiah performs her marriage with his nephew Sadanandam (Relangi) a spendthrift who also stays with them. At present, Ravi moves to the city for higher studies where he falls in love with a medic Saroja (Krishna Kumari). Now Ravi learns Saroja's past that her mother Kanthamma (G. Varalakshmi) is betrayed by a swindler Chalapati (Mikkilineni) for which they have been ostracized. Yet, Ravi stands strong, being aware of it, Bhushaiah warns Ravi but he defies. So, Ravi has to leave the house to marry Saroja. Thereafter, Ravi becomes a Police Officer, to his fortune, appointed in his hometown and lives by the side of their family friend Ramanaiah's (Ramana Reddy) house. Parallelly, Bhushaiah fixes a rich an alliance to Leela which is called off as groom's parents hear of Ravi's marriage. During that plight, to protect his honor, Bhushaiah performs Leela's marriage with Ramanaiah's elder brother's son Joga Rao (Padmanabham). Exploiting the situation, Jagadamba & Sadanandam creates the divergence between Ravi & Bhushaiah but Joga Rao & Leela give a check to them. Meanwhile, a tragic incident, Shantamma becomes terminally ill, requests Bhushaiah to see Ravi and he agrees. But deceitful Sadanandam lies that Ravi refused to come which leads to Shanthamma's death and angered Bhushaiah does not allow Ravi even to his mother's funeral. After some time, Saroja gives birth to a baby boy when the love blossoms in Bhushaiah and secretly visits to bless the child. Here crooked Jagadamba & Sadanandam contract Chalapathi who is currently a huge burglar. By Sadanandam, one night, Chalapathi surrounds the house when he double-crosses and plans a robbery. Ravi senses it, immediately rushes along with Saroja and in the combat, Saroja kills Chalapathi to save her in-laws family, having knowledge that the person is her father. At last, Bhushaiah understands the virtue of Saroja, invites Ravi back and Jagadamba & Sadanandam also realize their mistake. Finally, the entire family is reunited.

Music composed by Saluri Rajeswara Rao. The comic song "Ayyayo Chetilo Dabbulu Poyene" by Madhavapeddi Satyam on playing cards and its sequels was very popular. Music released on Audio Company.[2][3]

Trivia

It is the first film to be shot at Visakhapatnam.[4] It is subsequently followed by Maro Charitra (1978), Driver Ramudu (1979) and many more.
