"Girls Like You (featuring Cardi B)" on YouTube |
"Girls Like You" is a song recorded by American band Maroon 5, from their sixth studio album Red Pill Blues (2017). A remix version was released by 222 and Interscope Records, as the album's third single on May 30, 2018,[1] featuring American rapper Cardi B. This version was written by Adam Levine, Cirkut, Cardi B, Starrah, Jason Evigan and Gian Stone and was produced by Cirkut and Evigan. The single has reached a peak of number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it the second top 10 entry from the album, Maroon 5's 14th and Cardi B's sixth top-ten single overall. With "Girls Like You" following "I Like It" at the top of Radio Songs, Cardi B became the first female rapper to ever replace herself at number one on that chart.[2]
Background
After extensive touring in support of their fifth studio album, V (2014), Maroon 5 began the writing and recording sessions for their sixth studio album. On October 11, 2016, the band released the tropical house single "Don't Wanna Know", featuring American rapper Kendrick Lamar.[3] Another single, entitled "Cold", featuring American rapper Future, was released on February 14, 2017.[4] Six months later, the band released "What Lovers Do", featuring American singer SZA on August 30. However, when the band unveiled the tracklist of their sixth album Red Pill Blues on October 4, 2017[5] and the two songs "Don't Wanna Know" and "Cold' are later revealed as stand-alone singles and was featured on the album's deluxe edition.[6] Only "What Lovers Do", served as the album's lead single.
"Girls Like You" was revealed as the ninth track on Red Pill Blues via Apple Music.[7] It was announced as the third official single from the album, following the song "Wait".[8]
Composition
"Girls Like You" is a pop and pop rock song.[9][10] It has a length of three minutes and 35 seconds in the original version, while the extended single version is 20 seconds longer. It was written by Adam Levine, Cirkut, Cardi B, Starrah, Jason Evigan and Gian Stone and was produced by Cirkut and Evigan.
The song is written in the key of C major with a tempo of 125 beats per minute.[11] It moves in common time, with Levine's vocals spanning from G4 to A5.[12]
Commercial performance
In the United States, "Girls Like You" has reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 behind Drake's "In My Feelings",[13] becoming Maroon 5's 14th and Cardi B's sixth top-ten single overall.[14]
Music videos
Official video
The official music video was directed by David Dobkin and released on May 30, 2018 on Vevo.[15][16] The concept for the video has Levine alone at a mic with the band in the background, then features a rotating assortment of women dancing and lip-syncing around him. The video features appearances from Maroon 5's band members and the song's featured artist Cardi B, as well as cameos by (in order of first appearance): Camila Cabello, Phoebe Robinson, Aly Raisman, Sarah Silverman, Gal Gadot, Lilly Singh, Amani Al-Khatahtbeh, Trace Lysette, Tiffany Haddish, Angy Rivera, Franchesca Ramsey, Millie Bobby Brown, Ellen DeGeneres, Jennifer Lopez, Chloe Kim, Alex Morgan, Mary J. Blige, Beanie Feldstein, Jackie Fielder, Danica Patrick, Ilhan Omar, Elizabeth Banks, Ashley Graham, Rita Ora and Levine's wife Behati Prinsloo and their daughter Dusty Rose.[16] The video is similar to the music videos for rappers, Drake's "Nice for What"[17] and Jay-Z's "Family Feud".[18] As of September 2018, the video has over 830 million views, making it the fifth most viewed video of 2018.[19]
The clothing worn by the guests of the music video features several messages that represent various social justice and identity movements. Immigrant rights activist Angy Rivera of New York State Youth Leadership Council wears her organization's T-shirt with the phrase "Undocumented Unafraid Unapologetic".[20] Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman wore a T-shirt with the phrase "Always Speak Your Truth". Jackie Fielder, founder of indigenous-led San Francisco Defund DAPL Coalition, wore a T-shirt with the words "Divest, Water is Life".[21]
"Girls Like You" topped YouTube's 2018 Songs of the Summer list globally, and ranked third in the United States.[22]
Vertical video
A vertical video was released on August 27, 2018 on Spotify.[23] It features the same women who appeared in the music video, with the exception of Cabello. This video is also used for the band's Red Pill Blues Tour (2018–2019).
Promotion
On June 14, 2018, the band announced "The Girls Like You Project" for fans around the world to participate is to take a picture on a collage in form of the song's single cover, it can be used on the website.[24]
Live performances
The band performed "Girls Like You", an encore for their Red Pill Blues Tour, along with a cover of "Forever Young" by Alphaville, as a tribute to their late manager Jordan Feldstein, who died on December 22, 2017.[25][26]
