Charlie is a Malayalam film directed, co-written and co-produced by Martin Prakkat.[1] It stars Dulquer Salmaan, Parvathy and Aparna Gopinath.[2] The music is composed by Gopi Sundar, while Jomon T. John handles the cinematography. It was released on 24 December 2015 to positive reviews.[3]

Production

The filming began on 25 May 2015 in Idukki. IBTimes reported that the film is an experimental one and that each actor will be spotted in a new look. The film was shot at various locations in Kochi, Munnar and Gujarat.[1] The filming was completed by September 2015.[4]

The first look poster was released on 15 June 2015.[1] The official trailer of the film was released on 13 December 2015.[5]

The film's soundtrack was composed by Gopi Sunder and the lyrics were written by Rafeeq Ahamed. The songs were released on 7 December 2015.[6] A single "Chithirathira" sung by Vijay Yesudas was released separately on 21 December 2015.[7]

Box Office

The film set an opening-day box office collection record in Malayalam movie industry by amassing 2 crore (US$240,000) in the opening weekend.[8][9] It is estimated to officially have collected 2.45 crore (US$290,000).[10]

Critical Reception

The film opened on 24 December 2015 to mixed to positive reviews.

Indiancinemas gave the film a rating of 7.9 out of 10. Film critic Tejas Nair of Thoughtcream rated the film with a grade of C- from a scale of A to F, stating "Unni R’s story begins well and had great potential of being a fantasy story, but the climax is a let-down, and whatever he wanted to say with this convoluted theme of adventurism, nihilism, romance, and altruism, just sways in the air like a fallen leaf."[11] Third Shows opined "Charlie is a feel-good romantic movie."[12]
