Is anyone checking Scoop??--Bddpaux (talk) 15:55, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose we can take that as a resounding "no." -- 64.229.15.199 (talk) 00:25, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

On the future etc.

I will keep this brief -- I'm very busy. A little while back, I pretty much stepped away from this project and then recently came back pretty hard. I am not a young man. I am not elderly, but I am certainly not young either. Time is a valuable commodity to me. While it might be lofty to think this place will run like a news organization, it isn't too out there to think it could run like a solid news project. I have been deeply involved here for roughly 16 years or so. We've had some VERY SMART people ensconced here over the years -- two of them have left this world. We've had professors, undergrad. students, grad. students etc. etc. .....not to mention people from every other walk of life one could imagine. But, let me put down what my future plans look like around here: Put succinctly, I will be focusing my attention largely on 2 actions here in the near future..... Reviewing and developing Reviewers. I will do a pinch of Admin. work around here (and thank God for the people who pretty much only do Admin. work here), but we have absolutely GOT TO develop some Reviewers around this place. I get angry when people call English Wikinews 'a failure' -- I mean, which kind of yard stick are they using, to begin with? Whatevs...... We absolutely MUST re-focus on the core principles of what we are here to do: Report the news. Please think long and hard about how you can further that focus. We need reporters and reviewers. What can you do to make that happen? At the end of this year, I will deeply consider my future here. Let's do some good work. Citizen Journalism matters in this world.--Bddpaux (talk) 16:42, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed and I really appreciate the hard work of anyone who has contributed, but to answer your rhetorical question, Wikinews is a failure to the extent that someone using this site would not really be informed about what's going on in the world or in his world (if we are talking local news), which is the goal of a news outlet. Since wikis are dynamic, they can change at any time and we could have some insurgence of great reportage and competent editing that makes this a go-to outlet for news. Probably not, tho. I continue to contribute here and I continue to believe in this platform for citizen journalism, but let's be real here: after 20 years, it's actually declined from when it was most active and vibrant and there is no clear path to having a stable group of editors doing reporting that could leave someone reasonably well-informed about current affairs any time soon. —Justin (koavf)TCM 20:18, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Smart words -- If I had a magic wand, we would combine languages (in clusters) e.g., English - Spanish would be clustered etc. etc. One would be able to simply push a button and 'jump' from one language to another. So, there would only about about 7 iterations of Wikinews grand total. That would (at least) double or triple oversight of each 'site'.--Bddpaux (talk) 16:41, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
