Area covered

Anyone what to try and define the geographic area that we will cover in this project? Vegaswikian 17:58, 15 August 2005 (UTC)

The article titled Las Vegas, Nevada, should include only items within Las Vegas Proper, as Las Vegas, Nevada is a man-made geographical boundary. And I would hate someone to say WP is a bad source of information if it was to say "The Las Vegas Strip and Lake Mead are located in Las Vegas, Nevada". Las Vegas can refer to the entire valley (Greater Las Vegas). Although I would exclude Boulder City, Nevada (as beautiful of a place it is) it is not in LV Valley; just like Jean, Nevada.

I think a good set of boundaries would include anything south of the Mount Charleston turn off (I consider Mount Charleston part of Greater Las Vegas). Anything north of the southern tip of Henderson. East to Lake Mead & Lake Las Vegas (Ok, I'm EXTENDING GLV a bit here, but it's notable and popular with tourists). West to Red Rock/Blue Diamond.

That would exclude the city of Boulder City and Hoover Dam, which I think should be included as well - most B.C. residents consider themselves part of the greater Las Vegas area, and the building of the dam certainly impacted the economy and growth of Las Vegas. -Satori 17:59, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

I Wonder if the area that the LVCVA is responsible for is the best government guide. While there is some bickering about who gets what share of the pie, this one group sells LV to the world. Their site says they cover Las Vegas and southern Nevada. Here is a quote from the LVCVA site: The LVCVA provides a vital service for the public by contributing to the growth of the economy in all of Southern Nevada. The LVCVA's marketing efforts cover all of the more than 130,000 hotel and motel rooms in Southern Nevada. The room inventory includes Las Vegas and the surrounding territories: Laughlin, Boulder City, Jean, Primm, Henderson, North Las Vegas and Mesquite. The entire Clark County area really is the area of interest for Las Vegas. If it's good enough for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, it's good enough for me. Boulder City is not a part of the metropolitan area of Las Vegas. It is an independent city not linked to Las Vegas and gambling but rather the Dam. Most people from Boulder City don't consider themselves a part of Las Vegas. I am editing that part and will continue to do so because Boulder City is not a part of Las Vegas. Boulder City does not rely on the culturual or economic interests of the valley but its own.

Category names and what is included

Would it make sense to label all categories of things that would include Las Vegas with Las Vegas in the title and then allow other communities to be listed as a a sub category? Another option would be to list everything under Clark County, but I think that would be more confusing. We could add a comment to all of these categories along the line of:

This category covers all of Clark County, Nevada. Please discuss any new subcategories at Wikiproject Las Vegas before you create one. Vegaswikian 20:33, 15 August 2005 (UTC)

Yikes. Any chance of minimizing the number of categories?

• I do think township categories is overkill. Again, most items fit well into Category:Las Vegas, Nevada, yet will still maintain geographic accuracy in the article for Las Vegas, Nevada. My main issue is very specific to the article Las Vegas, Nevada. Opposed to Las Vegas as a term Representative of Greater Las Vegas.
• Category:Las Vegas attractions, if it is to be used, should include items of interest to main-stream site-seers. Not including shows. Examples:

In: Fremont Street Experience, Forum Shops at Caesars, Fountains at Bellagio, Lake Mead, Mount Charleston

Out: Legends in Concert, Mormon Temple, Sunset Park, Mike Tyson's (former) home

• How many botanical gardens does Las Vegas have? Does it warrant a category to maintain such a large(?) list?
• (I'm not part of WikiProject:Schools so) is it common for Schools to be categorized by district?
• I like Category:Las Vegas Landmarks
• Libraries (See comment on schools and botanical gardens)
• Conventions? Does WP have articles on conventions?
• I think Las Vegas monorail stations would be better placed in a nav (infostyle) box, there isn't that many stations [PoV warning] (now or futuristically [unless they tax us residents *AGAIN*]). [/Pov warning]

Local companies and companies headquartered in LV should be ok.

Ah many questions.

• Township categories. Well, things are really located there. The Census Bureau says they exist. So...

• Botanical Gardens. Well, of the 7 in the Nevada Category, 5 are in the valley. That's more then in several states.
• School District. It is only common for the largest school districts to have a Category. The one that comes to mind is Los Angeles Unified School District or Category:Los Angeles Unified School District.
• Conventions. Not only are there articles, there is a subcategory for Category:Erotic conventions and Category:Hacker conventions among others.
• Monorail. Adding a nav template should not be a problem. There is no longer a list of the stations, the Category is being used instead so keeping this is pobably required since you should have a cat or list. However, we will need to consider how to list the properities that have a stop. Wynn Las Vegas has a stop now. They run a shuttle bus, actually 4 buses, to the corner of DI and Paradise to move people from their hotel to the monorail/ convention center station.
• Local companies. Of the 24 on the Nevada category, 22 are Vegas based and two from Reno. So one for Las Vagas does make sense.

The Las Vegas-area articles seem to get more than their share of spam and low-quality external links. It is probably a very good idea to go through all the external links and retain only the ones that high-quality, or "official" links like for the Chamber of Commerce. I have also noticed that one editor has been adding references to Gross, Daniel (Nov. 7, 2005). "Avoiding Las Vegas". Slate. in many Vegas based articles. There does not appear to be any material from that reference in any of the articles. I don't think it is spam, simply a POV link that is not really a reference for the article. I've deleted a few and probably missed a bunch more. I think the same guideline that BlankVerse suggested above should apply to references and see also sections. Las Vegas Attrractions article

What is the sense of the project about creating this article from the Attractions section of the metro article? With a short introduction it would make a good sized article. Vegaswikian 02:13, 22 August 2005 (UTC)

Template:Las Vegas-stub

The Stub-sorting WikiProject criteria for creation of new stubs in usually at least 100 articles. You might look at both Category:United States-related stubs and Category:Western US geography stubs to see what could be moved to a Las Vegas-stub. Then you should also create a list of hotels, casinos, and other Las Vegas-area articles (both stubs and missing) that are not in those two categories. If the total is over 100, you should go ahead and propose it at WP:WSS/C.

One question, after a quick look at the categories listed above: Since I notice several articles that were in Nevada, but not in the Las Vegas-area, would it be better to have a Nevada-stub (notice that all the "daughter" stubs below {{US-west-geo-stub}} are by state)? Should we have a guideline on the project page as to what material is included in the above headings? One editor is adding a commentary about Las Vegas to multiple articles as a reference. There is nothing in those articles that I can see that was taken from that source. The link might be included under external links, but as commentary, I'm not ure it would meet the high quality point that we have mentioned on this talk page. I suspect that we may need to better define what meets the highquality bar and if something like an opinion piece needs to be included in numerous articles. See. Wikimania 2007 Bid

I know this is really early to think about 2007 already but I think Las Vegas would be a perfect place for Wikimania 2007. With all the hotel rooms and convention space. I see no problem in starting to consider making a bid. If there is interest, from a number of people, then a proposal could be started on. Knowing the dates would be critical given how space is booked. The biggest problem I see is cost if we have to pay for the conference facility. Given the desire by the city of Vegas to move up in technoligy, they may be willing to help if the publicity is there, but I suspect this will not happen. I see Vegas being able to compare well with other cities in terms of hotel cost, airfare cost, food quality and food cost and shopping. Be aware that if a group takes this on, it can lead to a lot of work. It will also take a lot of work to see what local support we can gather. Vegaswikian 08:30, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

Attractions sections in casino articles

Lately it seems that many of these articles are acquiring sections that list features like:

• Wedding chapels
• Spas
• Fitness centers
• Shopping

These are features at nearly every casino hotel and including them on otherwise complete articles seems to make the article look like an advert for the casino. I have a smaller problem with this they of information when it may be all we have to include in an article. Vegaswikian 05:23, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

I think what needs to happen is that instead of listing of attractions, it needs to be woven into the article whether it be its own section or part other sections. --Ben 04:33, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Bally Companies

The Bally article needs a lot of work. Bally has a very complex history. It sold off the original manufacturing division then later was purchased by Hilton, later Park Place, later Caesars, even later, Harrah's. The article does not talk much about the gaming division and about the divisions being sold off. If someone has more information please work on this article. Thanks Ben 11:01, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

The Western

Boardwalk Hotel and Casino update?

• I random stumbled on the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino article and from my own LV trip in Feb 2006, I couldn't figure out where this was located on the strip. This 'splained things, Lucy: "The Boardwalk Hotel and Casino has closed as of January 9, 2006 to make way for Project CityCenter." from [1]. Thought I would pass this along, I didn't see anything obvious about how the articles of former establishments are treated, though it is not included in the {{Las Vegas Strip}}, so that's a good sign. -- MrDolomite | Talk 09:48, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. Redirects and the various Vegas related articles

Naming conventions (settlements) has been discussing moving some US city articles to their basic name. So a place like Las Vegas, Nevada could be moved to Las Vegas. I have raised an issue with doing this for Las Vegas that others seem to agreee with. This is the issue of what would the correct article be for a Las Vegas redirect? I have started to DAB some of these links but the list is massive and so far most links do need changing.

Since Vegas also redirects the Las Vegas, Nevada we really have two questions. If you look at what is being redirected, many of the redirects are not really about the city. They are about the area in general or casinos not in the city.

Possible targets for one or both of these redirects inlclude:

• Las Vegas, Nevada
• Las Vegas metropolitan area redirect from Las Vegas
• Las Vegas Strip redirect from Vegas
• Las Vegas Boulevard

Most of what outsiders see as Vegas or Las Vegas is not the city so the Strip would appear to be a more precise target for these redirects. After some reflection I think the metropolitan area artice would be better. Both articles would need a specific dab back to the Las Vegas, Nevada article before any other dabs. Both would not need to point to the same article if that in fact is a good choice. I have indicated my curent thinking on this above. What do the others here feel about this? Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Proposed Nevada WikiProject

• Why not move it to be a regular project? At the minimum, it could be a good place to list the related project including this one, gambling, roads and any other ones that are out there. The biggest issue is that there does not appear to be a lot of editors interested in things Nevada. I have been working on adding all of the airports and would like to get back to the registered historic places. Image request

Hi all, I'm bringing it up here cause I assume this will have the highest concentration of people living in Las Vegas. Anyway, recently Madame Tussauds got a new wax model of Master Chief, and because he is a video game character, images are all fair use. However, a photo of the wax statue could be free if someone were to take a photo of it. Not only will it help illustrate the Halo 3 article, but it would be a free image, so if/when Master Chief (Halo) becomes featured, it can have an image on the main page. Entry costs US$24 for an adult (online). I'm not asking people to pay for entry especialy or to travel to the museum, but next time you are going out for the day (for example if you have guests or something), could you please consider it. Plaza Hotel & Casino

From the Wiki on the Plaza: "The Plaza's famed glass-domed Center Stage Restaurant has since closed as well."

I just stayed there this past weekend. The glass-dome area is now simply called "The Dome," and it's a sportsbar. (Info backed up from the Plaza's website: http://www.plazahotelcasino.com/dining.php ) I wasn't there during the evening, but I presume the Plaza's sportsbook can also book wagers from there as well. Resort projects

There have been questions about listing the individual properties on the Mandalay Bay site. There are several hotels there and other facilities. We will be seeing the same at The Venetian and The Palazzo complex then Wynn and City Center and so on. I think we need to have a common solution. The most obvious would be to have one article for the complex and then individual articles for the various facilities. Any opinions? Vegaswikian (talk) 21:58, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Having just watched "Building it Bigger"'s episode on the Palazzo, I'm tempted to say that the Palazzo and Venetian are two separate entities. There is WP precedent, with separate Bally's/Paris articles for that complex, which is entirely under one roof. It's possible to stay entirely at Bally's or Paris, and have the complete Vegas resort experience (hotel, check-in, entrance, casino, spas, restaurants/buffets, chips, nametags on staff, etc) without ever having visited the other side.SpikeJones (talk) 02:29, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Yes, which is why the question especially as Echelon Place and Project City Center get built out. I'm leaning to say that there should be one article for the complex and then articles as needed for the notable components. I'm not convinced that all of the hotels or condos at these complexes deserve an article. However they are worthy of a section in the resort article. Likewise for the Sands complex. Some lists are already listing the two (actually 3?) hotels as one and saying it is the largest in number of rooms. We don't have an article on the entire complex that covers the hotels, meeting space, convention space and parking which is rather extensive and is really all part of a single resort complex. I think that needs to be done so that while it is one resort it has different indpendant components operating together. Vegaswikian (talk) 20:11, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

Categories - 2

There is an effort underway to rename most categories of the form city to the city, state form. On the surface this is not a big issue. However some editors have taken the position that these are now city only categories and they can delete everything else. Rather then face this down the road, would it make sense to review the projects use of categories? Should we create more categories for the Las Vegas metropolitan area? Or maybe start ones for the Las Vegas strip. Right now using Clark County, Nevada categories seem to be a good top layer. Note that unless you are watching the articles affected, deleting of categories is not easy to track. Vegaswikian (talk) 00:32, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello, and hope I can help

I have just recently been doing a bit of reading around and getting to know how to sort of transfer from being a reader to a contributor and I think this project will be a good opportunity for me to do so :)

My main interest right now is improving the Portal so that perhaps eventually it could be moved to more appropriate categories. I also will work on writing a few articles from time to time...

My point of view on Las Vegas is that the fact that we get too much attention from the rest of the world there is not nearly enough focus on local life here and I will do what I can to help bring the reality that Vegas is a real city into my work here on the project. At the same time I am more than happy to try to contribute to the tourist side of things.

I am just curious as to who all is still active on the project and wondered what everyone else has been up to? lately I have been working on the portal site, and tagging a few articles about casino's and things of that sort. I plan to do a bit more probably tonight.

I was thinking perhaps some cleanup of the wikiproject page would be a good idea by the way, I have noticed that there really is a bunch of stuff on there that isn't really needed such as perhaps more active projects. I think that most of this stuff should be deleted for now and proposed later on as additions that we could make... I feel we are over prepared as if this project needs to work as a active one while most aren't even really updating the page. I would love to see the project streamlined and successful. we should focus our efforts and get re-started.

• Peer review (maybe, this perhaps would be worth keeping)

Just to let you know, if I seem too enthusiastic :p it is only because I consider my involvement in the Las Vegas project to be my priority out of the 4 I have joined so far. It is the easiest for me to write in, and pretty soon I will be able to contribute pictures as well.

I also would like to propose that we add Boulder City into the scope of Las Vegas since it is what connects us to Lake Mead and that is considered to be part of the scope of our project.

sorry I know this is a lot to suggest all at once but I would really love to breathe some life back into the project because I think Las Vegas deserves good attention! we aren't just a tourist trap any more and there is some amazing history behind this town.

Ok, so I went for it

I have cleaned up this projects page and tagged it as inactive. the reason is no one replied to my comment here. I have to assume that means that there are not active members of this project who have the project itself watched. While I have marked it inactive I will still be taking advantage of this page in my effort to improve Las Vegas articles. Question: It might be easier to add parameters to the WikiProject Nevada for the various Las Vegas related articles than to use an entirely separate banner, and would probably save talk page space. Unassessed articles

OK, I just went through Category:Unassessed Nevada articles looking for Vegas ones. I assessed all of these and tagged them to be a part of this project. If others could check to see if I missed any, that would be good. Also when I did this, I tended to include in Vegas when there was any possibility that it might fall here. So if you see any that don't belong please feel free to change. Finally, I need to raise an issue with the Nevada project on how to classify templates and lists and other misc articles. The Real Simpsons House

Hello awesome Las Vegas project. I am working on improving article on 742 Evergreen Terrace so that it includes info about the life-sized replica of The Simpsons House in Henderson, Nevada. What I am looking for is someone in the Las Vegas area willing to drive over to Henderson and take a few photos of the house, it no longer looks like the Simpsons house unfortunately and I haven't been able to find any legimately licensed free-use images, but am holding out some hope. Gaming revenue information

User:Pacomartin has been compiling information pertaining to gaming revenue of various Las Vegas area properties. Now, this user seems to have spent an incredible amount of time compiling all this info. I'm not sure if it's necessarily encyclopedic or not. Assuming it is, there are definitely formatting and citation issues to resolve. I have mentioned some of my concerns previously at Pacomartin's talk page.

However, my main concern right now is where this information is located:

• Las Vegas Strip area casinos have information at List of Las Vegas Strip hotels
• Downtown area casinos have info at Downtown gaming Las Vegas
• Boulder Strip (and some Henderson) casinos were previously at Boulder Highway before being moved to Boulder Strip Gaming, Las Vegas
• Laughlin area casinos have some information located at the town article Laughlin, Nevada

I feel this info should be located at Gaming on the Las Vegas Strip,Gaming in downtown Las Vegas, Gaming on the Boulder Strip and Gaming in Laughlin, respectively. I think your concerns are valid. In addition there is the overbearing appearance of those tables. Also in their current form, the information can not be updated by anyone else. The we get into the fact that this provides his personal e-mail account information. The more you look at it, the stronger the case that this is not encyclopedic becomes. I bit the bullet on the strip gaming area, to cleanup the hotel list article, which is at LV Strip (Nevada gaming area). If it needs to be, that is not a problem. The state reports show this as LV Strip. However that is ambiguous since it would mean LV strip for most people. We would have the same problem for other areas like Boulder Strip, South Lake Tahoe and Laughlin. So best to deal with these dabs up front so the article names can be consistant. I considered using something like Nevada gaming area LV Strip but that does not appear to be the name and is pretty ugly. I rejected Gaming on the Las Vegas Strip since many of the included casinos are simply not located on the strip. Some are two miles or more away. This form also avoids different forms for the names based on the location. Now we only need to deal with names for the Balance of County areas where we have 3. Las Vegas metropolitan area

A while ago, Las Vegas-Paradise, NV MSA was moved in to the Las Vegas metropolitan area article and kind of took it over as the focus. This source shows that area covering the southern part of Nevada to just north of Mesquite and just east of Pahrump. I believe that is all of Clark County. As much as I hate the suggestion, we probably need to restore the MSA article to Las Vegas metropolitan area and move that content into Las Vegas Valley. At this point in time we have an article that attempts to cover the valley area, but is a redirect to an article on the metro area article. Don't know how many are following this page, but I think this needs some discussion and would like everyone to participate. General information about the actual urbanized area of Las Vegas and its surroundings (NLV, Henderson, unincorporated urban townships) should be located in a separate article, since it is a narrower focus. What that article should be is another question. "Las Vegas Valley" somewhat implies a geographic focus (as in the valley itself) and technically wouldn't include Boulder City (if such info is included), while "Las Vegas metropolitan area" is a bit ambiguous depending on scope (this term should probably be a redirect instead). Las Vegi?

As of now there are an array of Las Vegas related articles. Currently we have Las Vegas, Nevada, Las Vegas Valley, Las Vegas Valley (landform), Las Vegas Strip, and Las Vegas-Paradise, NV MSA (Las Vegas metropolitan area). Currently a confusing issue is how the metropolitan area page redirects to the Valley - not the landform one - article instead of the MSA page. I myself tried to solve some of the confusing prospects of having so many similar named articles arguably covering the same topic but decided it best to figure this out on the talk page. Ideas? Suggestions? Perhaps merging back the Valley and Metropolitan area articles would help to clear up confusion? 08OceanBeach^S.D. 03:36, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

The MSA covers all of Clark County. The metro area is now a redirect to the Las Vegas-Paradise, NV MSA, by you I believe, which exists only as a census bureau creation. The Las Vegas Valley (landform), actually a basin, describes the geography that is home to what everyone calls Las Vegas, Vegas or the Las Vegas Valley which includes the cites of Las Vegas, Nevada, North Las Vegas, Nevada, and Henderson, Nevada and the separately notable Las Vegas Strip which is a portion of one street in Paradise, Nevada and Winchester, Nevada. If there is anything to merge, it would be the county and MSA articles since at this time they cover the same land area. But since the MSA can change, I'm not sure that is the wisest solution. As to redirecting Las Vegas metropolitan area to Las Vegas-Paradise, NV MSA, at this point in time that is probably not the best choice since many of the hard redirects from Las Vegas were created when there was no choice for something that covers the entire Vegas Valley. I see. The MSA and County articles should stay separate as the MSA definition is subject to change, but I think the landform article should be merged into the current Las Vegas Valley and the landform information inserted under Geography or Geology. That is a possibility, but the land form articles tend to be separate. One reason is they use different categories, which is really a nit. Second the two articles really tend to have different readers so having them focused on the different topics can help many readers. I think part of the problem here the the fact that Las Vegas is a dab page. With the rename of Las Vegas Valley, it could become the main Las Vegas article, replacing the dab page, in a few months. Assuming a consensus for that happens. Basically in the past we had two articles on the county and none focused on the valley and the activities there. Some editors believe that Las Vegas should be defined to be the city and the strip. I don't see that being reasonable or in line with what reliable sources mean when they say Las Vegas. Rail Transportation in Las Vegas

Rail transportation in Las Vegas currently has a very weak coverage. According to this discussion, it would make sense to cover all rail transportation in Las Vegas, including the free trams on the Strip, the Las Vegas Monorail, the McCarran International Airport Automated People Movers, and possibly the tram system in Primm, Nevada.

SDI (who designed both systems) documented each system and designated both of them a people mover, as shownhere and here. The Whiskey Pete's-Primm Valley people mover is a monorail, and according to Google Maps it runs between 35.611177,-115.391909 and 35.609768,-115.387339. The Primm Valley-Buffalo Bill's people mover runs on two rails, between 35.610758,-115.38533 and 35.614352,-115.385419. Hope this clarifies. Pkkao2 (talk) 02:22, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

List of Las Vegas Strip hotels ----> List of hotels in Las Vegas

There is an article titled List of Las Vegas Strip hotels, and it should be rebooted into a new article/list titled List of Hotels in Las Vegas. Why have a list of hotels in LV that focuses solely on the Strip hotels when you can have a list of hotels in the entire Las Vegas area? There can be sections on Downtown hotels, Boulder Strip hotels, and elsewhere in the LV area. I don't know if images and addresses should be included in this list. I am planning to get to work on the reboot of the LV strip hotel list soon. Jim856796 (talk) 09:42, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

This on article started since the Strip is the major tourist area in town. Listing addresses for all hotels with articles may start pushing this into the WP:NOTTRAVEL area. I will note that all of the hotels are already included in {{Las Vegas hotels}}. You stated in this article's talkpage a couple years ago that it could become a featured list. I doubt that will happen. How about the addresses (and images) be removed from the LV strip hotel list article? All that should be on the list is the name of the hotel and the number of rooms (and possibly some notes). Anything can happen. Sure the list could be a featured list with more work. But does it make sense to remove content that would be needed to reach FL since it may not happen in the near future? Link cleanup help

With the various page moves over the years, some links became redirects and some are, for various reasons, pointing to the wrong article. I'm currently trying to go through the approximately 2,500 inbound links to Las Vegas metropolitan area and changing those that are not really about the metro area to Las Vegas Valley or other links. The metro area article does have some valid links to it. The article Las Vegas-Paradise, NV MSA is a redirect to the county article since currently it is coextensive with the County. However this was not true in the past and there is no guarantee that it will be in the future so this may be best split out after some of the past history for the MSA is added.
In going through the links, the vast majority need changing to Las Vegas Valley. Some that talk about location, especially in the infoboxes probably need to be changed to the actual town like Paradise for the T&M, Whitney for Sam Boyde Stadium or the county for the Las Vegas Speedway. Some may need rewording for clarity like the Flamingo Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada or something similar.
So if you can lend a hand feel free. If your edit count is important to you, this is and easy way to add constructive edits to your total. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:10, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Two items of interest are a 1980 article which brings up claims of looting post-fire and a 2005 article on a FBI sting operation called Operation Yobo which nearly came to a halt due to the fire.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you?
