Bahrain-related articles needing geographical coordinates

Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles related to Bahrain, I've found some articles that I believe are about places in Bahrain, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.

The articles in question are listed in Category:Bahrain articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:

1. Ash Shamaliyah Region
2. Bahrain Synagogue
3. Capital Governorate
4. First Oil Well, Bahrain
5. Jidhafs
6. Markh Village
7. Seef

...and there are many more, as well. At the time of posting this notice, there were 50 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.

Why add coordinates?

By adding coordinates, a Wikipedia reader can easily view the location on a street map, nautical chart, topographic map, by satellite photo, realtime weather map, and in many other ways. Coordinate data makes an article eventually appear in various services such as Google Maps' Wikipedia overlay, Google Earth, and Wikipedia's own internal map service. Coordinate data also helps readers looking for geographically-based data, such as locations near a reference point, or related information.

How can I do it?

The articles are all marked with {{coord missing}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox. You can find out how to do this at the Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Bahrain articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Bahrain articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. WikiProject cleanup listing

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). Misspelt article titles

Could someone look into the contributions of Sadadi as it seems like there are a lot of bin spelling mistakes. It could be malicious e.g. Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa is redirected to Isa ibn Ali Al Khalifa. This hasn't been corrected since it happened in 2006. Cheers, Jack (talk) 00:51, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

That just goes to show my ignorance. I hadn't read Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Arabic)#Names and now I feel like I've just wasted the last half hour! However, there does seem to be quite a bit of inconsistency between ibn/bin. Jack (talk) 01:00, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Reviving the project

I think Lihaas, AliWiki and John Carter are active. We also have non-WikiProject contributors to Bahrain political articles such as: Billmarczak, Sitrawi86, Khazar2, MR.HJH, AKhani84 and Bromley86. The best and I think easiest way to try to revive the project might be to get together some list of reference books which relate to the subject, and possibly other non-fiction sources as well. Getting the information about relevant reference books would allow people to know which articles might be most "important", which would be at least one indicator of where to place material first, and a list of other sources would allow a bit more ease in finding articles on what might be called "lesser" subjects. I can try to put together a list of topics given specific coverage in encyclopedias and the like, which would probably include most of the more important topics, as well as, maybe, some other nonfiction sources which could be used on those articles and any other they cover. It's good, but I might myself choose to adjust some of the importance ratings to more accurately reflect the "official" WP:1.0 language. Part of the problem I've ssen is that, for several countries, for instance, there are figures who are hugely important to the country, like F. W. de Klerk and Nelson Mandela for South Africa, as an example, which are basically required for any encyclopedia on the topic, but which aren't necessarily direct subarticles of the main article. Jesus may not be a direct subarticle of Christianity, either, but probably merits Top importance to Christianity. Maybe taking the language from the original 1.0 importance criteria would work better. John Carter (talk) 18:12, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

I wouldn't worry to much about some of the stubs. Many of them are small settlements or people of minor notability at best. We may well find some references to them in some of the major sources on this subject, but it is probably in our best interests if we first work to bring the more significant articles to a high level of quality and completeness. Doing so would also allow us to better know what isn't already included somewhere about the less important articles elsewhere, and make it easier to develop them as well. Well, that's one part covered! I've been trying to assess all the articles (especially the unassessed ones) in the past hour or so. The Bahrain Portal has been launched !

And frankly, we're a bit late on this one!

I've made the Portal:Bahrain portal and in this portal, we will assemble and arrange the Wikipedia:WikiProject Bahrain pages so that anyone who'd like to read about Bahrain, from villages like Nuwaidrat to the king, at ease. Pictures

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.
