Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Malaysia
Points of interest related to Malaysia on Wikipedia: Outline – History – Portal – Category – WikiProject – Alerts – Deletions – Cleanup – Stubs – Assessment – To-do |
This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Malaysia. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
- Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Malaysia|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
- Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
- You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Malaysia. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
- Further information
- For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.
This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Asia.

The article is poorly written - possibly machine translated from the mswiki article, with a number of longstanding issues that have not been fixed. In addition, my online WP:BEFORE searches showed no significant coverage of the topic in reliable sources - had the topic been notable, I would have expected some mention, somewhere on the Internet. Also, the references in the article seem to be tangential to the topic rather than directly pertinent, though I have not gone through them in exhaustive depth. See also this edit summary by Jdcooper, stating that, even after some tidying up on their part, the article is "still original research, lacking sources, possible WP:COPYVIO". I propose a Redirect to Silat, with the option of unredirecting in the future if a better referenced/written article were to come to light. SunloungerFrog (talk) 15:52, 5 December 2024 (UTC)

- Delete Seems like either a POV fork of Silat or an article about an organization within Silat but the language is so tortured I'm not sure which. Possibly some WP:SYNTH attempt to establish an org as being the true lineage of Silat. Regardless it's not well sourced and doesn't seem novel enough form the parent article to justify the fork. Simonm223 (talk) 16:18, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- Redirect to Silat, just in case it is a genuine search term. Jdcooper (talk) 21:45, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- Delete per WP:TNT. Clearly machine learning generated; one of the “references” is a genealogy chart of a person involved, which is a classic coatrack. It’s a long name, so unlikely to be used as a search term. Bearian (talk) 13:48, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

- Redirect to List of schools in Kedah. It is in that list under the name SMK Mahsuri (currently a redirect to Mahsuri National Secondary School) which is the school's acronym name.4meter4 (talk) 19:01, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Ong Kai Jin, did you check any of the local news sources with the non-English name, such as this one? Although I don't read the local language myself, I am finding enough sources about this school that I am reluctant to redirect it. Since this is the equivalent of a large public high school in the American educational system, it is perhaps not surprising that these news sources exist, and I would expect to find official reports and other reliable sources as well. When the school is located in a non-English-speaking country, searching for its translated name is really not an adequate WP:BEFORE search. WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:11, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- The news were about principal thanking a company for gifting glasses to students among interviews of others,[1] some of the individual achievements,[2][3][4] a teacher's own fund to help the needed,[5] two students got a helicopter ride under a government syndicate's initiative,[6] a road accident which mentioned about a mother was sending child to school,[7] an individual interview,[8] an announcement by a company to execute a project with schools[9] and an award for being a teacher figure in the district.[10]
- Those featuring individual achievements and interviews should be disregarded as the school is not inherent of the notability per WP:INHERITORG, and the remaining did not provide in-depth coverage or facts for the school itself. Ong Kai Jin (talk) 04:32, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- Any source that contains any in-depth coverage about the school itself should be counted. Some editors prefer the Wikipedia:One hundred words standard for "in depth". The point is, those 100 words have to be about the school.
- If you have a source that says "Aisha is a very smart student. She won the city contest for most artistic fruit display. She lives at home with her parents, grandmother, and older brother. Her grandmother taught her how to cut fruit decoratively. She attends the Mahsuri National Secondary School", then that suggests (weak) notability for Aisha, but not her school.
- However, if you have a source that says all of that, plus it has several sentences about the school, then the part of the source about the school (but not the part about the student) counts towards notability for the school. It is not about being "inherent of the notability". WhatamIdoing (talk) 07:25, 29 November 2024 (UTC)

- Keep - Per WhatamIdoing, and adding that as well as SMK Mahsuri (which turns up plenty including some research and book mentions) there are also articles showing for "Mahsuri Secondary" "Langkawi" [1] and presumably other variations. This is one of 22 nominations that were made on the same day, each minutes apart. I do not believe there was time for an adequate WP:BEFORE and my presumption based on sources that show up, and on the nature, size and age of this school, is that it is notable. I have not researched each source more deeply as the size of the task with 22 schools is prohibitive. The SCHOOLOUTCOMES RfC close discouraged mass nomination of schools simply because the guideline had changed, and there is no better deletion rationale here as to why these should be deleted. Barring a source analysis that discounts all the sources that prima facie show notability, I think this should be kept Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 20:06, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

- WhatamIdoing, I meant the school does not inherit notability just because any of its students or teachers got featured on news, examples were clear in WP:INHERITORG. They would also fail to be included under lists along with each of their achievements since they are not notable by themselves. WP:WPSCHOOLS/AG#OS advised that specific students should not be mentioned unless they are notable by their own right, and individual awards should not be listed. WP:WPSCHOOLS/AG#WNTI also advised not to mention individual pupils or teachers. After excluding them, I do not believe these are contextualizable in the article:
I would some of these news have one sentence about the school, even there is some, most of them did not provide relevant facts about the school itself. Ong Kai Jin (talk) 14:50, 6 December 2024 (UTC)In 2017, Bank Mualamat announced to launch MyDebit with the school. In 2019, a mother witnessed a car accident while sending her children to the school. In 2020, two students of the school got a helicopter ride under a syndicate's program. In 2021, Tenaga Nasional Berhad contributed 25 glasses for the students.

- Did you? Local newspapers do not meet WP:AUD. LibStar (talk) 03:34, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- @LibStar, first, AUD only requires one (1) non-local newspaper, and by "non-local", we mean "small town", not "media outlet serving a market with nearly two million people in it". Local newspapers count for all purposes except for proving that someone outside of Smallville paid attention to the meeting of the Smallville Local Club.
- Second, non-profit and government-run schools don't have to comply with AUD or any other part of NCORP at all, because NCORP says that they can qualify under the GNG. WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:57, 3 December 2024 (UTC)

- Appears to be nonsense. Of the many sources already on the page, there are some that speak strongly to notability:
- "Cempaka Schools bags World Cup trophy". The Star. 29 May 2013. Retrieved 2021-11-07. The school has repeatedly won trophies at the notable World Education Games. National news report.

- More national news reporting on another matter [3]
- And more [4]
- Guinness World Record attempt [5]
- Not sure if this one is independent, but has a little history of the school [6]

- Procedural keep - Tbh I would usually be starting at delete on this one and trying to disprove my assumption, but this is one of multiple nominations all nominated within minutes of each other without any evidence of a deletion rationale or a WP:BEFORE. Looking at the others, many seem fairly obvious keeps with minimal searching. Searching takes a lot of time, and I don't see the case is made that this time be spent. I think we should procedurally keep this one, without prejudice against a renomination by anyone (without the usual six month stand off) who has spent sufficient time looking at the issue to write a fuller deletion rationale. - Comment - News: [10], [11], [12], [13]. Arguably WP:MILL but if you are not finding this stuff you are not searching properly. It gets two full pages in the book Improving Schools (2014).[14] However that appears to be self published. Despite being self published, the two pages refer to a published newspaper letter in the Star and as we haven't yet found that, searches are clearly not gathering all the information. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 07:43, 6 December 2024 (UTC)
- I helped you, that turned out to be a self-submitted article. [15] I then assume it is a book of compilation of own submission. For your information, The Star often excluded from Google's news tab search results because they usually locks old articles. Ong Kai Jin (talk) 15:43, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

- A search of "bukit mewah" school OR sekolah OR smk site:thestar.com.my OR site:nst.com.my on Google should work the best or a search of "smk bukit mewah" OR "bukit mewah secondary" site:thestar.com.my OR site:nst.com.my on Google should be more precise. - Comment. We certainly don't have to accept this because it is just an essay, but Wikipedia:WikiProject Beauty Pageants/Notability (beauty pageant participants) states that national pageant winners in the big four pageants (of which Miss Universe is one) are generally presumed to be notable. Meaning that its likely WP:SIGCOV exists. Given the year she won, it is possible the coverage was more offline than online as it was in the weird time period where everything hadn't yet shifted over even though the internet was up and running. - Civic thrill for beauty queen: [New Sunday Times Edition]
- Summary: About her purchase of Honda Civic.
- Celeb style [Malay Mail]
- Summary: Interview about her fashion style.

- I’m not surprised. The pageant would have not been covered in the UK or the United States but would have been covered in Southeast Asia. The best sources are probably offline (at that time; maybe digitized now?) newspapers in Malaysia, and I don’t believe most are available through The Wikipedia Library.4meter4 (talk) 05:41, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- The above two articles were accessed through ProQuest in The Wikipedia Library and are from the two of the major newspapers in the country at that time. – robertsky (talk) 06:04, 21 November 2024 (UTC)

- Keep: Passes WP:NBEAUTY. However, according to 4meter4, while she won in 2006 and media coverage may not have been as active at the time, it is likely that most of the coverage was offline. I have found a supporting reference here: China Daily, which cites Reuters as the original source.--— MimsMENTOR talk 13:01, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

- Comment: Does this individual work in the fashion industry now? [17], [18], there's some mention of a fashion model in these sources. Oaktree b (talk) 00:55, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
