Suspected sockpuppets

edit

The user has been WP:TENDENTIOUS in attempting to change information about Ava Max's songs with sources that do not meet WP:RS.

Included are edits made from the first IP: [1][2][3][4]. The second IP seems to be solely editing on Max's personal article, adding an unreliable Spanish source in this edit, alongside removing a category despite agreement in the article's talk page about her ethnicity here. The third IP's user contributions also seem to be targeting the same song articles as well.

In addition, the user has had a history of adding the same information with each account; the same edit was reverted by an administrator [5], while the sockmaster's account removed information from the article, placing a non-reliable website on the edit summary [6]. Each sock also doesn't leave edit summaries for changes made, which is consistent with the sockmaster's various talk page warnings. Angryjoe1111 (talk) 06:12, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets

edit

As previously noted by Angryjoe1111 at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Tbone49/Archive#21 February 2020, this editor repeatedly returns to Ava Max-related topics: editing from this range in 2020 [7] (September 2020) through to now [8] (February 2021). Like Tbone49, their main MO though is updating new music releases every Friday (the music industry standard day for new releases and announcements) and the "List of 202x albums" lists. Compare Tbone49's last contributions before their block to List of 2020 albums (and the sheer number of their edits to that article) and now that it's 2021, the latest IP has been contributing to List of 2021 albums here and here (merely example diffs; there are plenty more I could link).

Every week they return to edit using some new variant of this IP in the range 199.7.159.83/16. I'm not quite sure how wide any potential blocking admins want to cast the net here, but this range has been being repeatedly used to edit music topics by Tbone49 since after their block in January 2020, beginning around April 2020 with...an edit to Ava Max, naturally. The music edits really picked up from July 2020, and this range has been getting a workout every few days from January 2021 to now. Tbone49 has used a whole host of IP addresses that I have not reported since then, most of which I reported to and were blocked by Ad Orientem, but as I checked them all before alerting Ad Orientem, all geolocate(d) to British Columbia, Canada, as does this range.

Finally, Tbone49 themselves and their other blocked sock account, Thatboi99 (talk · contribs), repeatedly edited from the Wikipedia Android app (see both of their contributions logs for the frequency of these edits), and the majority of this IP range's edits (199.7.159.83/16) are tagged with "Mobile app, Mobile web app, Android app edit" as well. I've added Special:Contributions/140.161.88.36 to the above for geolocating to British Columbia, Canada also, and their contributions to much of the same Tbone49 targets: Ava Max discography, List of 2021 albums. Ss112 17:08, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've added Special:Contributions/199.7.157.48 as they've moved on. It's quite similar to the first IP I reported, editing new pop music topics like 1 and 2. Ss112 23:41, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've now added a fourth account, 208.98.223.24, as they also geolocate to British Columbia, have all their edits tagged with "Mobile edit, Mobile app edit, Android app edit", and have used the IP in the past to edit one of Tbone49's favourite topics, List of 2020 albums 1 2 3 4. • I'm really not sure what needs to be done here. Perhaps I'm missing something, but what's the disruption? Are these edits factually incorrect? If they're just updating information, what's the problem? Obviously CU is useless here, and it would be quite a stretch to block all these IPs without a really good reason – which I'm not seeing here. Also, at this point this SPI has been open for so long that any blocks would have expired by now, so can we just close this? – bradv🍁 00:54, 16 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •   Clerk note: The most recent IP edit was almost two weeks ago, so not really any point in investigating further. I do note that between this report and the one in the archives, 208.98.222.0/23 looks like a possible range to block, but there's a lot of legitimate activity on that range, so that seems like a non-starter. Going forward, semi-protection on the affected pages might be a better tool. Closing with no action. -- RoySmith (talk) 00:29, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

As noted in the previous two cases filed on this user, has soon after creation started editing Ava Max-related topics [9], [10]. As noted in my previous filing from February of this year (which was closed with no evidence), Tbone49/User:Thatboi99 repeatedly edits from their mobile using the Android application (along with the IPs noted in my previous filing) and thus has most of their edits tagged with "Mobile edit, Mobile app edit, Android app edit". As this editor has been established (and would be known from the data available to CUs) to be living in British Columbia, Canada (noted in my previous filing as well), they are obviously interested in Canadian topics and have edited a slew of Canadian affiliate radio station articles (two examples [11], [12]), and even created the article for the Canadian radio network Bounce Radio, and voted !keep when it was nominated for deletion [13].
