Niall McCormack

Niall McCormack was born in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland in 1960. Due to his deafness, he was sent to Mary Immaculate School for Deaf Boys, Stillorgan, Co. Dublin. In 1970, McCormack was transferred to Christain Brothers, St. Joseph’s School for Deaf Boys where he was one of the first pupils to sit the Leaving Certificate examination in 1980.

McCormack studied Architectural Drawing at Bolton Street College of Technology for two years. He secured a place to study Art Foundation course at Dun Laoghaire School of Art in 1982 and was awarded a NCEA certificate in Visual Education. In 1983, McCormack became a Fine Art student at the National College of Art and Design. In 1986, he was awarded a NCAD diploma in Painting. He returned to the NCAD for a BA (Hons) degree course. He was successfully conferred a degree in Fine Art. McCormack was the first deaf student on a Fine Art course at the NCAD.

In 1990, McCormack moved to London where he continued to pursue his painting career where he had a number of exhibitions in London and the UK. He run a number of Art workshops, gave a talk on Deaf Art and gave gallery talks at a number of London galleries including Tate Britain and the Whitechapel Art Gallery. In 2002, he was invited to participate in Deaf Way II at Galluadet University, Washington DC where he exhibited a number of paintings along with invited deaf artists from all over the world. He delivered a lecture on European perspective on Deaf Art.

In the same year 2002, McCormack was asked to have a solo exhibition at the Custom House Studios, Westport. Mr John O’Donaghue, the Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism officated the opening of the new Arts centre where he was the first artist to have an exhibition there.

In April 2007, McCormack left London to move back to live in his hometown Westport permanently. He submitted his one painting to the Royal Hibernian Academy for its annual exhibition. His submission was accepted. Following my painting being shown at the RHA, the Molesworth Gallery made a contact with me and invited me to exhibit my two paintings for the annual Winter show and a solo show in the following year. Olive Braidsen, then the Chair of Arts Council of Ireland, performed the opening of my one man exhibition at the Molesworth Gallery.

Since 2007, McCormack has exhibited at the RHA regularly. He had a second solo exhibition at the Molesworth Gallery in 2010. He had a solo exhibition at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, his birthplace. He spent his childhood in Castlebar mainly on his school vacations.

McCormack currently lives and works in Westport.
