editSure, if it's really making things confusing, I'll stop. (Though some of those titles really suffer from excess verbosity ... e.g. "Proposal: How to", "Bot which automatically", etc.). Cheers, cab (talk) 00:38, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
DRAMA Report
editYou seem to do way more work on the discussion report than I do. And responsibility and I are like oil and water. What do you say we switch (so you're the main man, and I'm the backup)? — Jake Wartenberg 04:30, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
- That means its not done doesn't it? Umm, ya I guess that's okay. I've got school for tomorrow though, I'll let Ragesoss know. §hepTalk 04:37, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
- Well, it's kinda done. It just needs 15 minutes of work, but I am way too tired. — Jake Wartenberg 04:40, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Is DRAMA ready, or are more sections still pending?--ragesoss (talk) 06:31, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
- I've got 2 spots I want to get covered still. The non-contributor one needs finalizing and I want to add this. They're nothing life-ending though, so if it needs out they don't have to be covered. Sorry, §hepTalk 06:34, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

- Sorry, I'm on the computer that won't let me use AWB right now. The other one is in the garage...it crashed for one reason or another. If X! can't get to it by this evening I should be able to get on a laptop that I can use AWB with by then. I'm off to sleep now, 2:23 here and I have to be up in 4 hours for 7 hours of some sort of prison where there's lots of pencils and paper. §hepTalk 07:25, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with File:All London 2012 logos.svg
editThanks for uploading File:All London 2012 logos.svg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

GR1
editRegardless of the state of the coords question, please don't remove the GR1 template: it's the reference for the area as well as for the coords. Nyttend (talk) 02:31, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
- Now how is anyone supposed to know that (well obviously someone does)? I figured the area had no references, as there were no ref tags after any of the statements. It's on all of them; I'll have to figure out why they're like that. If anything they should be after the area, to show that it encompasses the entire section. Right? Anyways, thanks for letting me know. I was wondering why you kept reverting me :S . §hepTalk 02:35, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
- Are you familiar with what the GR2 template does? It references the entirety of the basic Demographics section, but it's at the top. I agree that it would be better to place it at the bottom, or have an introductory note that everything is thereby referenced, but that's the way it is at present. These references were added several years ago, after all, so I don't find it that surprising that they're not up to current standards. Nyttend (talk) 02:40, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
- I'll be sure to move the reference around when I update any more articles. And yes, I'm familiar with how the template works. §hepTalk 22:49, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Buddy
editI noticed. He already made an edit to the Kent article which was actually correct. I think he thinks I am obsessed with the Kent article like he is with the Akron article? Also, I noticed you had to revert some edits by User:StarkState. I had some communication with another editor who works at Kent State University Stark Campus who has made me aware of a concerted effort by certain administration at Kent State Stark to control that article as well as the article on Betsy Boze (some of the edits on both have allegedly been done by herself and she has contacted me by e-mail), so just be on the lookout for WP:COI and potential sockpuppets, including the following users: KentStark, Purocafe, CantonStark, StarkState, KentLester, TerriThomas, and DeltaLove as well as BVBoze which I know is Betsy Boze. I will be looking as well. The Kent State Stark article needs a ton of work, but like the Akron article, has certain "hindrances". Also, thanks for using the e-mail template at User talk:JspottsKSU. --JonRidinger (talk) 22:32, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
- No worries...it happens. You don't need to worry about the comment about Hiram College either. While I don't think it's that out of place, removing it makes sense to me, which is why I didn't put it back. --JonRidinger (talk) 22:40, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

On that page, "Posting to this page will stop the bot immediately" needs to be bolded. I cannot do the edit myself because I'll stop the bot. I would also recommend semi-protecting User talk:ShepBot so IP vandals cannot maliciously stop the bot. -- IRP ☎ 19:14, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
- I thought that was bolded before, maybe I missed it when I converted to {{mbox}}es? Either way it's there now, thanks for the pointer. On protecting, I'd like to keep it unprotected, sometimes I'll go around and subst: user welcome and warning template and had a pretty big problem over the summer with numerous IP talk pages (substed a parser). I guess I'd like to leave it open, even for the odd vandalism, when I ScrewUP™ they should be able to yell at me as well. That's one thing I like about the current setup I have, it's not constantly running like the ClueBots so the odd message or so doesn't cause any damage. I hope that sums up some sort of answer for you. Thanks, §hepTalk 19:25, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Chicago
editHave you run Chicago lately?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 00:36, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
- Nope. I've been having issues that is stopping me from being able to do my normal processing so I've been kind of putting it off (Antivirus detects problems with Foundation servers and tried to block AWB from opening every page, I only have one computer that can process all of those articles). What would normally take 15 minutes to setup would now take about an hour. I'll look at doing it tomorrow night, I should be able to set some side towards it then. §hepTalk 00:41, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
Second opinion
editHey Step- When you get a chance, I would like you to check an article for me. I tagged it with notability concerns as it is a two-liner about the word Devilstrip, but wanted to see what some other editors think. I think you can guess who created it. Thanks --JonRidinger (talk) 20:07, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
- Piece of utter garbage! Neither of the refs are reliable sources (some crappy website and a blog). I would suggest a prod, but you-know-who would just remove it. So this will probably end up at AfD. A google search turned up 3 results, of which 2 were editorials and not RSes and the other was 2.95 to read. I wish they would have just left him blocked. Too much trouble. Especially with edits like [1]; I don't get it. They've been around with all of the accounts for over a year, I've provided every sock with WP:RS, it's like they never even read our policies. I would also note that 192.172.8.13 appears to be Threeblur0, we need to keep an eye on that IP if possible if it turns up in the future. §hepTalk 20:26, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
- But that newly added ref to a wiki is much more reliable. 68.37.227.121 also appears to be Threeblur0. §hepTalk 20:40, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
- Notice how they're so much smarter than everyone about Akron-related things, and yet he can't spell simple words correctly? That sickens me. §hepTalk 21:28, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
- It's very frustrating. As for the map thing, he did get help from Versageek (which is good), but even then, the map I was referring to was very unclear, plus it's not that good of an image anyway IMO. --JonRidinger (talk) 21:33, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
- It looks like he's using MS Paint or some other elementary photo editing program, the jpg compression was downright awful, hard to understand and read. Even the new map has off colors for what Wikipedia normally uses and would benefit from originally being in PNG that way there's no loss when he comes in and edits it in paint or whatever they use. Though his random guessing of location is not encyclopedic and shouldn't be included anyways. I don't understand why the current maps don't work, he took 2 good ones and made one crap-job one. §hepTalk 21:38, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

- Yeah I'm not sure what program he has used, but the end result is a poor-looking map that stands as a stark contrast to other maps on Wikipedia and the maps already present in the infobox. I'm not opposed to an additional map (provided the other two stay), but I prefer it to be as clear and free of clutter as possible. It's not like there aren't an abundance of free maps available on this site and the Commons that can easily be manipulated for Akron. --JonRidinger (talk) 21:52, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
- Good luck trying to control him. :( As always, drop by if you need any help. §hepTalk 01:22, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Signpost deliveries and section headings
editHi there. Since Signpost deliveries to talkpages are being done by ShepBot these days, I assume this is where I should go to comment on them. (If I should go elsewhere, please let me know.) First, thanks for supervising the deliveries. Especially as Wikipedia grows, the news role played by Signpost is increasingly important, and I'd certainly never remember to read it if I didn't get the talk messages. • I noticed that the 16 March 2009 delivery used a custom section heading, and completely omitted the standard == Section ==
markup. The problem with that is that we loose the "[edit]" link. I used to delete the older format just by clicking that link, doing a select-all then delete, and then saving. Now I have to edit the whole page, and manually find and delete just the Signpost section. The fancy formatted banner is fine, but could you please also include the standard section for this purpose? • Thanks for listening. —DragonHawk (talk|hist) 20:01, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
- Hi DragonHawk. The design was done by another user, I just substitute a template. I would suggest any complaints you have about the format go to WT:POST, as I have no control over that. I do understand your predicament and agree that a section edit link should be provided in all future deliveries. Thank you for contacting me; if you ever have any bot-related problems with ShepBot in the future please contact me. §hepTalk 19:43, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
- Appears to have been fixed by the designer. §hepTalk 20:14, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, okay. Well, fixed is fixed, so thanks! :) —DragonHawk (talk|hist) 03:53, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
Can you add these pages of lists of rulers to these catagoies? Please also include the "|μ" in the catagoies. --Carlaude (talk) 21:32, 8 March 2009 (UTC) Are you able to still do these-- like I added above?--Carlaude (talk) 19:37, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
- Not exactly the simplest thing in the world. I promise I'm trying to figure out an efficient way to do this. The way it look now I'll pretty much be doing it by hand. I'm having some issues with my nuss bar and will be with various doctors over the weekend, I should be able to just go through and pop then in one evening. §hepTalk 21:46, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
- I can do them by hand if that is what it comes down to-- and find other bot tasks for you. What if you only did the ones with many pages going into the same Category? Would that be different? Would it be different if there was no "|μ"?
- There are, for example, 100 pages needing to be in Category:1st-century rulers. --Carlaude (talk) 06:18, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
- I'll be happy to do them by hand if it comes to that, don't worry. The number of pages doesn't matter that much. Neither does the mu. I'm using the same module I've used before, currently it tries to add the category smack dab in the middle of the page, earlier it was puting it in the very first line. It switches by itself, which makes me think that should be impossible (but it obviously isn't). I'll try to redo things tomorrow and see if that makes a difference, it hit 2:30 here and I should probably get a couple hours in. §hepTalk 06:25, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Not faulty reference
edit- It was not a faulty reference. Ucla90024 (talk) 00:29, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
- Yes it was, facebook is not an WP:RS in any way whatsoever. It should never be used as a reference and very rarely even used as an external link. Especially when dealing with a BLP, we have to be even more careful about what we put up. Don't use Facebook as a reference, it goes against policy. §hepTalk 00:32, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
That Rome geocache pic
editNo, sorry, it wasn't obvious to me! I am maybe not up on the subtleties of this and I couldn't see where it violates the MoS - I'd be very grateful for a pointer. I'm not sure about "some chick" but what I did see is that the page otherwise has no humans on it, even though it is a description of a human activity ... it's as if it takes place without people. I quite liked the idea of "it's a thing people do and look here's someone doing it" - plus it was (perhaps) fun/interesting that she was in a recognizable place, maybe anchoring it in some way. Having said all that, it's not like I am about to lose sleep over it or whatever, so we can I am sure agree to differ. Cheers. DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered (talk) 17:11, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

DustyBot on Commons
editSorry that you had to clean up the extra curly brackets. I just noticed the bug. Wronkiew (talk) 06:58, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- "Stupid bot" might have been a bit harsh... I'd rather snip 2 brackets than a lot of other things the bot could have done. Too bad it was a repetitive error (thought it might have been a one off), glad you could figure out the problem. It is a neat feature though, keeping things more hand-free if I understand it. §hepTalk 07:02, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
Searching Wikipedia: The Missing Manual
editI've changed the shortcuts H:TMM and WP:TMM to link to a more interior page, so your very useful search function (on the top-most page) isn't that visible any more. I think it would make sense to add it to the top of the {{Wikipedia-The Missing Manual - TOC}} template, if that is feasible; that would make the search function visible across all of the content pages. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 12:49, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- That would be a good spot to add the search box, I'm just not sure of how the best way to approach it is... If it's within the box at the footer it makes the whole template larger than what seems needed; but placing it outside of the template is difficult because each page has objects in differing locations. I'll see if I can come up with something if someone else doesn't in the mean time. Thanks for letting me know, §hepTalk 19:44, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Boze
editHi, I'm wondering if we can modify the first line of the Betsy Boze article. You seem to be the keeper of the page, so I thought I would ask your advice. Part of it is just a personal preference/ favor, part of it is factual versus media.
- The personal preference question is if I can be described only as an "American academic" (see Gordon Gee of Ohio State, for example) versus an "American academic and former administrator."
- The other part is that while the media portray my resignation as being about a parking sign, that really isn't the story, at all (which I would be happy to share with you face to face or over the phone, but doesn't belong here). Enough damage has been done by the media. Can that line be removed?

Chicken taxobox
editHey I love the {{Infobox Chickenbreed}} you made, and have started adding it to articles. One thing though, it doesn't seem to display the image caption at all, don't want to loose this info. Can this be fixed, I will hold off adding the taxobox to article until I hear from you. Thanks for your hardwork, the taxobox rocks! Earthdirt (talk) 01:33, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
- Looks like ti was the user interface template that was off it read imagecaption instead of the correct image_caption, the script works well. I have fixed it on the page and on my templates. A couple other suggestions that could make this template even more useful: Add a purpose slot for weather it is show, dual purpose, meat, or egg breed. Also add a section for "Hybrid" types, many of the really common chickens are unrecognized hybrids like the Black or Red Sex-Links, and Cornish-Rocks. Newsletter Delivery Request.
editHello, I'm fairly new to wikipedia, and joined an almost dead wikiproject. There are a few editors who regularly contribute, but most just aren't there. I think a newsletter would be a great step to revive this project. I have left a request at User:X!'s talk page, but he has actively ignored the request. When I asked for help at editors assistance then sent me to you. I'm not reall familiar with how the bots work, but I can draw up a newsletter and have it ready to fo within the space of a day or so. Please message me and, if you want to deliver it, how the delivery proccess works. I'm hoping to have this be a bi-monthly newsletter. Thank you for your time. Drew Smith 23:19, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

I need your mentorship
editHi,
I need help from an experienced Wikipedian, and I saw your name over at WP:ADOPT.
I need your advice concerning WP:WPOOK, which I've been coordinating. The set of pages the project concerns is listed at Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge#Projected outline, and has grown to about 500 articles in the encyclopedia.
The goals of the WikiProject are:
- Increase awareness of readers of the existence of the outlines on Wikipedia
- Complete the existing outlines
- Create an outline for every subject that is extensive enough to benefit from having an outline (core subjects and major or extensive fields). There are thousands of these.
- Recruit as many editors to work on these as possible (we need thousands of editors working on these)
- Surpass portals in number by the end of the summer, and leave them in the dust by the end of the year
- Get the major outline subject areas displayed on the Main Page (in place of or in addition to the portal links at the top of the page)
- Increase the OOK to higher quality than Britannica's Outline of Knowledge (published in its Propaedia volume).
I'm very interested in your comments on how to achieve these goals.
Also I'm interested in every possible way of reaching readers and editors of Wikipedia. How can I get the most eyes and typing fingers on Wikipedia's outlines? Contacting editors directly without a reason relevant to them is spam, which I'd like to avoid. There are 75,000 regular editors on Wikipedia, and I want to contact all of them. So how do I do it? Directly or indirectly, I don't care which, piecemeal or all-at-once, all methods are fine with me. But I've got to find ways. I need your help.
I would also like to know how to find or attract editors to create new outlines. And I need advice on finding editors to help write the new outline article mentioned above (it needs to be fleshed out, completely referenced, and brought to featured article status).
Please recommend anyone you know who might be interested in sinking their teeth into a project like this. Or ways to reach groups of editors. Or ways to reach all editors. I welcome any and all recommendations and advice you might have.
And any thoughts on attaining the WikiProject goals above.
I look forward to your reply on my talk page.

Chicago tagging

Hey Stepshep, could you have your bot add project tags for the Shakespeare project to all articles in the William Shakespeare category and subcats. A lot of them already have tags, we're just trying to pick up stragglers. If we could also get a list of all the articles in the project on our watchlist page that would also be great. editSock
editIf someone uses both a username and an anonymous name consistently, would that be considered sockpuppetry? Or is it only when a user has two accounts? My question is with Special:Contributions/Qwerty5225 and anonymous user Special:Contributions/24.29.224.228. They both make the same types of disruptive edits to the same pages and have similar edit summaries, so I'm almost certain they are one in the same. However, I'm not sure what this user is doing is actually wrong as much as it is annoying. Any help here would be appreciated! Thanks --JonRidinger (talk) 04:00, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

editThanks for uploading File:NBCLima35.PNG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not.
