Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Kingofcomedydvd.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Kingofcomedydvd.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 18:52, 2 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: copyrighted images

edit

I am not sure if you do this often, but removing images first and asking two days later may not be very respectful of other editors' capacities and intentions. Use of a copyrighted image is fair only if the accompanying text strongly requires so. Of the three images you removed, use of at least one (Image:Drnopromo.jpg) was fairly fair, as the importance and impact of that iconic bikini wearing is referred to both in the History and Bikini in popular culture sections. The paranoia about non-free images sometime prevailing notwithstanding, the regular behavior for this type of cleanup goes through a few simple steps - (a) ask/warn the editor who put in the images about the appropriateness of use, may be also on the article talk page; (b) when an appropriate amount of time (ideally five days, like AfDs and IfDs) has passed without a satisfying answer forthcoming, the images in discussion may be removed from the article; (c) if the very existence of the image on Wikipedia seems questionable, then put a semi-speedy deletions tag on the image itself, with a note to the uploader; (d) if use of the image is justified, leave the image alone; if there's too much hassle, take it to IfD; and if the uploader or another editor fails to provide appropriate justification, delete. Thanks... and Happy New Year. Aditya(talkcontribs) 05:17, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's not about being nice. It's about mutual respect, assuming good faith... and, most importantly, discussions. That it exactly why we have talk pages (to discuss). That is how differences in opinion are settled. While you unilaterally can declare that If there is no doubt wether or not to remove the image, remove it, and I can, again unilaterally, declare that use of at least one (Image:Drnopromo.jpg) was fairly fair - both of us are actually sticking to our opinions. While both opinions are in accordance with the policies and guidelines, there is ample reason to discuss the matter beyond being nice. There is also ample scope to develop the article and the image description page to solve the matter in a constructive (and additive) way. An encyclopedia with more than 2 million articles, many of them of very high standards, was not built merely by policing, but mostly by developing. By the way, what makes you think that you know the policies more than others? Implying that superiority repeatedly is not too "nice". Right? Aditya(talkcontribs) 14:30, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
10 things is not policy, not even a guideline. It's an essay. The best essay on image copyright, I guess, is still the one created be Megapixie. While useful in understanding how Wikipedia works, essays are hardly quotable as policy. Aditya(talkcontribs) 02:26, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Then talk policies, not experience or essays. And, there are elaborate guidelines about dealing with non-free images, way beyond the scope for the essay. It takes a little time to grasp all that. But a careful reading of the policies and guidelines, coupled with observation of how it's done, will explain the process quite easily. Regards. Aditya(talkcontribs) 03:04, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Pulp fiction.ogg)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Pulp fiction.ogg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJTalk 19:21, 8 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Imdb00.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Imdb00.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. –Dream out loud (talk) 01:26, 10 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your You Tube Videos

edit

As you may be aware, YouTube has recently come in for criticism over it's handling of copyrighted works.

I note that you have a number of potentially interesting videos on You Tube that you link to from your user page.

Instead of supporting troubled proprietary sites, Why not support projects that value creative talent and assist in ensuring that a viewing public can enjoy and expand upon it?

Wikimedia Commons is one project that needs creative content (under licensing that lets people enjoy and expand upon it).

It would be much appreciated if you could see if you would consider migrating videos for which you are the copyright owner to 'open' formats like Ogg Theora, and moving them from 'failed' propriatey sites like YouTube to community sites like Wikimedia Commons, under an appropriate license.

Icelandic recordings

edit

You haven't been active on Wikimedia for a while, but thought I would still ask: would you be able to record audio examples of Icelandic as audio illustrations for some Wikipedia articles? — Eru·tuon 02:37, 22 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Yea, sure. Did you have any in mind? --Steinninn 17:50, 3 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yay! Glad to get a response. I'm thinking of the set of examples in Aspirated consonant § Preaspirated:
  • kapp [kʰɑʰp] or [kʰɑhp] "zeal"
  • gabb [kɑpp] "hoax"
  • gap [kɑːp] "opening"
But I just realized that this set of examples might be confusing for some readers because of the initial aspirated consonant in kapp, so another set would be better:
  • sakka [sɑhkɑ] "sinkstone"
  • sagga [sɑkkɑ] "dampness" (obl. sg.)
  • saka [sɑːkɑ] "to blame"
Since this is an audio illustration of contrasts, you would record all three words in a single soundfile, like the other examples in Aspirated consonant. There are other contrasts in Icelandic phonology that would be nice to have recordings of, but I'm most concerned with the aspiration examples at the moment.
other examples
tæp [tʰɑɪːpʰ] "uncertain" (fem.); tæpt [tʰɑɪft] "uncertain" (neut.)
grafa [krɑːvɑ] "to dig"; grafta [krɑftɑ] "to dig"; grafna [krɑpnɑ] "to dig"
segi [sɛːjɪ] "(I) say"; sagt [sɑxt] "(was) said"; sagði [sɑɣðɪ] "(I) said", saga [sɑːɣɑ] "something said, story"; sagna [sɑknɑ] "(of) stories" (gen. pl.)
koppar [kʰɔhpɑr] "small pot" (nom. pl.); kobbar [kʰɔppɑr] "young seal" (nom. pl.); kopar [kʰɔːpɑr] "copper"
kapp [kʰɑhp] "zeal"; gabb [kɑpp] "hoax"; gap [kɑːp] "opening"
gættir [cɑɪhtɪr] "doorway" (nom. pl.); gæddir [cɑɪttɪr] "endow" (2nd sg. past); gætir [cɑɪːtɪr] "can" (2nd sg. past subj.); gætnir [cɑɪhtnɪr] "careful" (masc. nom. pl.)
sakka [sɑhkɑ] "sinkstone"; sagga [sɑkkɑ] "dampness" (obl. sg.); saka [sɑːkɑ] "to blame"; sakna [sɑhknɑ] "to regret"
vítt [viht] "wide" (neut. sg.); vídd [vitt] "breadth"; bít [piːt] "bite" (1st. sg. pres.)
dökk [tøhk] "dark" (fem. nom. sg.); dögg [tøk] "dew" (nom. sg.); tök [tʰøːk] "grasps" (nom. pl.)
If you have time to record tons of examples, you could record all the ones listed directly above, but since there are so many, I'll just request the sakka, sagga, saka one for now. — Eru·tuon 19:00, 3 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Love Is... comic strip.jpg

edit

Thank you for uploading File:Love Is... comic strip.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Stefan2 (talk) 18:03, 2 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

edit

Hello, Steinninn. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Nomina Sunt Odiosa

edit

The article Nomina Sunt Odiosa has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non notable short film by a known director. Nothing found in a WP:BEFORE search to help establish notability. Tagged since April 2019.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hof (Iceland)

edit

Why did you move it? A locality should be at Hof, Iceland as it was. Or do you mean this is not a locality? Ymblanter (talk) 06:59, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

@User:Ymblanter I was not aware that you could distinguish a locality by a comma. I thought they needed to be in brackets. Steinninn 07:17, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. For future reference, it is in Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#Disambiguation. Many other things such as rivers need to be in brackets though. No problem, I will move it back then. Ymblanter (talk) 07:42, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Ljósufjöll to Ljósufjöll system

edit

Why move ?. I have reverted as no justification given:

The term "Ljósufjöll system" appears to have been a unique creation by yourself and does not seem to be used in the English language.

The Icelandic name appears to have minimal ambiguity (jöll implies hill/mountain) and the geographical and geological literature use is consistent. Names by default should be the common name in use in majority of English speakers. Calling something a system is meaningless when its a volcano or volcanic system. Such may be in brackets.

I understand it is usual with an established name to usually suggest a move in the page talk page and wait a week for comments unless say disambiguation or spelling issue. ChaseKiwi (talk) 01:43, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@ChaseKiwi: Thank you for your message. I have added my thoughts to the talk page of Ljósufjöll. Steinninn 09:53, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
