Dave Nelson coaching record
editHi. At Template:NBL Coaches All-Time, there is a listing for Dave Nelson. What is your overall source for this list? What 2 games did Dave Nelson coach? Thanks. DaHuzyBru (talk) 13:44, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
- Oh my gosh. I totally didn't even see your post! Sorry.
- Dave Nelson was a stand-in Coach for the Brisbane Bullets when Brian Kerle was at the 1986 FIBA World Championships as Assistant Coach.
- The games in question were:
- 11/07/1986 - 93-90 road win against Bob Turner's Canberra Cannons
- 12/07/1986 - 100-94 home loss to David Lindstrom's Illawarra Hawks
- As for my source, I have a pdf of NBL Coaching Records that the league had on the website many, many years ago. These records were correct as of the end of the 2009-10 season.
- I cross-referenced the articles I could find on newspaper.com.au and was able to match up the dates from when Kerle was away and Dave's for and against (without that, I would not have been able to get all the specific games right for all coaches that only had a handful of games experience).
- Happy to help if you have any further questions. Statman84 (talk) 00:41, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. I recently created Dave Nelson (basketball), so I assume the Dave Nelson in your table who coached 2 games in 1986 is this Dave Nelson who was a player that season for the Bullets. I would not be comfortable adding that he was a fill in coach for 2 games unless there is a source we can cite for long term verifiability. Is that pdf available via Wayback Machine through old nbl.com.au archive saves? Do any newspaper.com.au clippings note Dave Nelson as coach? DaHuzyBru (talk) 08:58, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, the same Dave Nelson who played for the Bullets. Stand-in Player/Coach if you will.
- This is the page I found the pdf (when it was active):
- Not sure if you can still download it, but I did quite a while ago when I first stumbled across it. I assume it may have been taken down during one of the website's many updates. The league has a history of having these documents on the website, then take them down down the track.
- I just remembered that I didn't use newspapers.com.au for this info. I did for others, but not this one.
- Confirmation of Brian being at the 1986 World Championships:
- The Boomers had games between 5/07/1986 - 10/07/1986:
- The team (and therefore Brian) would not have returned in time for the Bullets' games on 11/07/1986 and 12/07/1986.
- Dave's win/loss record as per my pdf is 1-1, Average For and Against is 94-95
- Points For: 93 + 94 = 187/2 = 93.5 (rounded up to 94)
- Points Against: 90 + 100 = 190/2 = 95
- So the numbers match up there
- It may seem a bit presumptuous, but there was a process of elimination for the Coaching Records once the most obvious ones were taken care of.
- That is all I can tell you regarding that entry.
- Thanks Statman84 (talk) 12:35, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the archive link, good find. The digging and work you have put in is commendable, but unfortunately most of it leans towards original research which should be avoided. There might be something I can dig up with the above info at some point, who knows. Cheers. DaHuzyBru (talk) 14:18, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Just had a search through Trove and found this – it pretty much covers exactly what you have above, which is great: "He will assist head coach Brian Kearle, but will be in charge of the team when it comes to Canberra for one of four NBL matches while Kerle is away with the Australian team at the world championships." There is also this and this. DaHuzyBru (talk) 14:30, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- There you go. I remember I used Trove for a lot of it too. That must have been where I found it. Thanks for jogging my memory. Statman84 (talk) 01:40, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
