Comments on User:Qwerfjkl (bot)/code

I came across your request for bot approval regarding self links and had a look at your code. I have a few comments. The most critical one is that your code to escape special characters doesn't include backslash, which is a valid title character. You might consider copying the escapeRegExp() function from the MDN Web Docs page on regular expressions, which also is a more compact implementation.

Note that using regular expressions to extract a character at a known position (the first character) is a bit of overkill. You can use, for example:

/* title is unescaped at this point */
firstChar = title.charAt(0);
lcFirstChar = firstChar.toLowerCase();

In your subsequent regexps when you are matching the title, it would be a little more efficient to just do alternation over the first letter, which you can do with a character class. However, in this case, escaping of special characters should be done only after extracting the first character.

/* title is still unescaped at this point */
restOfTitleRegexpString = escapeRegExp(title.slice(1));
titleRegexpString = '[' + escapeRegExp(firstChar) + escapeRegExp(lcFirstChar) + ']' + restOfTitleRegexpString;

On a functionality note, the regular expressions you used to find links to sections won't match for piped links. I don't have an easy solution, though, as it's quite hard (a polite way of saying "it's impossible to handle all cases") to parse delimited text with traditional regular expressions, particularly with multi-character delimiters. I was thinking of something like the regexp in the second replace statement, but it has a couple of problems. In cases that don't match, I fear there might be instances where the non-greedy quantifier causes a lot of overhead parsing the text in an attempt to match. In cases where the closing ]] is missing, the regexp will match up to the ]] in the next wiki link in the text (if there is one), swallowing up everything in between. Based on a quick test, this behaviour is a change from how the wikitext parser handles this case, as it appears to recognize the second link and thus knows not to treat the unclosed link as a link. This issue is something to look out for with the current code.

I hope this may be useful to you. isaacl (talk) 22:16, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

@Isaacl Thank you for taking the time to look at my code. I'll try to improve it when I have time. I intentionally didn't match piped section links, because I felt that could cause issues in the text e.g. click here → click § Section ( {{section link}} can't handle piped links). ― Qwerfjkltalk 19:27, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
If I understand the issue being raised with CW Error #48, the key concerns are an unnecessary self-referential link to the current page, and a presentational concern (bolding). Both of these don't really apply for URLs with fragment IDs, since the self-reference is intended, and the link isn't bolded. So I guess none of the section links, regardless of whether or not there is link text, really need to be changed with regard to the underlying issues for CW Error #48. However if these cases are being picked up in a report that it would be nice to clear, then the base page name can be removed while keeping the link as-is otherwise, without replacing it with a template. isaacl (talk) 19:52, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
@Isaacl I don't think it is picked up in a report, and as the links behave identically (my quick test), I don't think its worth the effort. ― Qwerfjkltalk 16:57, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
Well, changing to use {{section link}} does change the appearance, and since section links don't relate to CW Error #48, perhaps your bot doesn't need to make that substitution. (On the other hand, even if the bot isn't strictly speaking approved to make a cosmetic change of replacing # with §, I imagine most people would be fine with it.) isaacl (talk) 19:48, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

RfA 2021 review update

Thanks so much for participating in Phase 1 of the RfA 2021 review. 8 out of the 21 issues discussed were found to have consensus. Thanks to our closers of Phase 1, Primefac and Wugapodes.

The following had consensus support of participating editors:

  1. Corrosive RfA atmosphere
    The atmosphere at RfA is deeply unpleasant. This makes it so fewer candidates wish to run and also means that some members of our community don't comment/vote.
  2. Level of scrutiny
    Many editors believe it would be unpleasant to have so much attention focused on them. This includes being indirectly a part of watchlists and editors going through your edit history with the chance that some event, possibly a relatively trivial event, becomes the focus of editor discussion for up to a week.
  3. Standards needed to pass keep rising
    It used to be far easier to pass RfA however the standards necessary to pass have continued to rise such that only "perfect" candidates will pass now.
  4. Too few candidates
    There are too few candidates. This not only limits the number of new admin we get but also makes it harder to identify other RfA issues because we have such a small sample size.
  5. "No need for the tools" is a poor reason as we can find work for new admins

The following issues had a rough consensus of support from editors:

  1. Lifetime tenure (high stakes atmosphere)
    Because RfA carries with it lifetime tenure, granting any given editor sysop feels incredibly important. This creates a risk adverse and high stakes atmosphere.
  2. Admin permissions and unbundling
    There is a large gap between the permissions an editor can obtain and the admin toolset. This brings increased scrutiny for RFA candidates, as editors evaluate their feasibility in lots of areas.
  3. RfA should not be the only road to adminship
    Right now, RfA is the only way we can get new admins, but it doesn't have to be.

Please consider joining the brainstorming which will last for the next 1-2 weeks. This will be followed by Phase 2, a 30 day discussion to consider solutions to the problems identified in Phase 1.

There are 2 future mailings planned. One when Phase 2 opens and one with the results of Phase 2. To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Possible bot tasking

Greetings Qwerfjkl. I don't know much about getting a bot tasking up and running, but I have a need for a task that I don't believe will be difficult (technically). I was wondering if this is something that you might be willing to do, if your time permits. Thank you.--John Cline (talk) 03:39, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

@John Cline I have no problem taking it up (if I can do it). I'm currently waiting for Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Qwerfjkl (bot) 2, but I'd be happy to try this afterwards. ― Qwerfjkltalk 06:09, 13 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks Qwerfjkl. I am trying to improve an endeavor to find, and encourage prospective candidates for adminship to consider starting their own RfA. Right now, I can publish {{subst:GetMop}} on their user talk page with a custom message of encouragement. The section produced links to the essay Administrators without tools for further encouragement. In the past, when this template has been used, its effectiveness has been significantly enhanced in situations where other users have added their own comments, seconding the original message. To increase these kinds of endorsing comments, here is what I am hoping to do:
I'll maintain a list of users who are willing to endorse an original publication of the template message. I would want the bot, as soon as possible after the template has substituted, to send a notification to each person on the list, alerting them that the template has been used and where. I'll provide the specific message to post later, if this is something that you can do. For what it may be worth, someone wrote this search link for me to find past usages of the template which may or may not have codeing useful to you. Of course, if there is anything you need me to do, to make things better for your bot, just let me know. Thank you for considering this for me.--John Cline (talk) 07:24, 13 October 2021 (UTC)
@John Cline: Hi, I don't think I can make this bot. My apologies for any inconvenience caused. I suggest asking someone with more experience writing bots, such as GoingBatty. Regards, ― Qwerfjkltalk 15:30, 13 October 2021 (UTC)
@John Cline: I'm not your guy for this. All my bots use AWB and each bot task has to be manually kicked off. Instead, I suggest you ask at WP:Bot requests so you can find a bot operator who can have the bot running at all times. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 15:51, 13 October 2021 (UTC)
No problem, I appreciate the consideration. I'll look into the bot request you recommended. I wish you both the best. Cheers.--John Cline (talk) 17:14, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hi Qwerfjkl. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at WP:PERM in case your user right is time limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. signed, Rosguill talk 19:21, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

MassTools

Hello! Thanks for showing me the MassTools script. I was testing it thoroughly now though and noticed that only half of those commands work.

These work:

  • MassPurge;
  • MassMove;
  • MassDelete;

These don't work:

  • MassRestore;
  • MassBlock;
  • MassUnblock;
  • MassProtect;
  • MassEdit;

When you click them, the page tries to load and gets stuck in a page reading that that special page doesn't exist. Any idea what might be happening? - Klein Muçi (talk) 22:17, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

Also MassMove works in a very peculiar way and unfortunately it's not for the best. - Klein Muçi (talk) 04:57, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
@Klein Muçi I can't really test these and see what's happening - they all require sysop rights. Pinging @1234qwer1234qwer4. ― Qwerfjkltalk 06:11, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
Just tested it on Meta-Wiki; the tools/special pages load for me. But since my js only loads a number of other user scripts I have collected (as well as adding the links to the toolbar), I suggest you direct any problems you have to their respective developers. ~~~~

@Klein Muçi There are loads of mass editing tools (WP:AWB, WP:JWB, de:Bandersnatch). The other scripts are rarer, though you could ask at WP:SCRIPTREQ. ― Qwerfjkltalk 16:19, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
Thank you! I already use AWB and JWB. The script already provides a way how to massdelete for me. The only thing I might miss is massprotect but if time comes when I need that, I'll go find a script just for that. - Klein Muçi (talk) 16:32, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
@Klein Muçi In case you are testing the scripts in a non-English wiki, this is indeed an issue that can easily be fixed as described at User talk:Timotheus Canens#Script change request; however, the developer has been quite inactive lately. ~~~~

Would it be possible that they are tweaked to have the behavior of this script? It provides some additional small features and one big change: A preview window to actually see what you're changing, what the final result will be. In moves it's crucial but even the other tools can benefit from some previews and warnings. - Klein Muçi (talk) 10:32, 22 October 2021 (UTC)

Help request for Ali Tajdary biography

Hello, good morning, I made a biography for (Ali Tajdary), I used your tips and I solved some problems in that biography, framing was modified additional links removed the article is ready to be published according to the rules of the wiki and your talk, please send it for publication if approved. ,thank you. Hoseinkandovan (talk) 05:53, 25 October 2021 (UTC)

Firstly, you need to fix the references - see Help:Referencing for beginners. You should also read Wikipedia:Your first article. Finally, a lot of the references are unreliable, such as the IMBD ones. ― Qwerfjkltalk 07:49, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
i used a lot of things in the sources, for example, i used eight reputable iranian sites for biography, one of these sites is ( manzoom.ir ), manzoom is the first official film and serial information database in iran, the other is a platform (sarshenasan.com) this platform records biographies as well as information on famous films.
Another link is the national newspaper (shoroonline.ir ) This newspaper has quoted three news items about Ali Tajdary newspapers are reliable news sources.the movies that this person has played have the highest score (imdb) among iranian movies. for this reason, i linked (imdb).i extracted movie information from four sources that are the most reliable sources in iran.I also used both Iranian and international links as well as news for albums and music.We do not have more reputable bases in Iran than the ones I linked to Please see again because there are no more reliable sources of these linked in Iran for (film) and (music)
Hoseinkandovan (talk) 09:22, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
However good the sources are, the articles included random curly braces (} {) and the referencing is completely wrong. WP:MOS may also help you. ― Qwerfjkltalk 10:03, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
hi, i deleted all the extra parentheses, edited the links, corrected the biography and text, applied all your descriptions on ali tajdaris page) if there is no other problem, please publish,thank you. Hoseinkandovan (talk) 12:56, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
The article is a mess. There are now brackets ( ) randomly (you can use italics instead), and the punctuation is haphazard throughout the article. You still have not fixed the references. Use <ref>www.example.com</ref>, not
<ref>1</ref>

Bold titles

Your bot removed a self-referential link here. This link was harmless, and was causing the text to render correctly (i.e. in bold) in the lead. If you're going to remove self-referential links (especially from lead paragraphs), please make sure to retain the bold formatting implied by the link. pburka (talk) 14:04, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

@Pburka Self links should not be used as a replacement for bolding text. I feel it wouldn't be worth unnecessarily complicating this relatively simple task for a small benefit. ― Qwerfjkltalk 17:58, 29 October 2021 (UTC)
They shouldn't be used that way, but removing the self link without replacing the formatting makes the page worse for readers. I feel that bots shouldn't be engaging in edits that degrade the reader experience. pburka (talk) 20:35, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

Hey, I like how you've customized the display title of your user page. I tried copy and pasting the template to mine but it doesn't seem to have any effect. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? AHollender (WMF) (talk) 18:09, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

@AHollender (WMF) (I actually shamelessly stole this from User:Sportzpikachu.) It gave the error

so I fixed that. ― Qwerfjkltalk 18:20, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
awesome, thank you, that helped me. working now : ) AHollender (WMF) (talk) 18:55, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
I actually stole it from User:Chlod lol, you can even see the exact same disclaimer. I modified it for my talk page though, so it says "sportzpikachu: talk" instead of "User talk:Sportzpikachu". Involves lots of css trickery with positioning so if you want to copy that be sure to play around with the values ―sportzpikachu my talkcontribs 02:29, 4 November 2021 (UTC)

WT talk:USPOLITICS

What had you actually intended here? Came across it on NPP and I feel that there's some story behind this. Just curious, not judging :) Sennecaster (Chat) 17:48, 3 November 2021 (UTC)

@Sennecaster: Oops. WP:AFCRC helper script can't handle non-mainspace requests, so I have to manually tag them for deletion. See:

Oh wow, yeah, quite interesting. Thanks for explaining, I'll keep that in mind until Enterprisey weighs in, and I guess there goes their hard-fought 0 pings... Sennecaster (Chat) 17:56, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
Should handle talk pages better now. (I think those diff links are a little suspicious, by the way...) Enterprisey (talk!) 06:42, 4 November 2021 (UTC)

Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

pokemon bdsp

Hello, you accepted pokemon bdsp but didn't create it. Did you forget, or did you intend to create Pokemon BDSP in its place? Thank you for monitoring AFC/R! 107.11.98.87 (talk) 14:10, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

Yes, I intentionally created Pokemon BDSP instead, it seemed a more common term. I meant to leave a comment but misclicked. ― Qwerfjkltalk 17:16, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

@BeatriceCastle To stop the bot editing a page, add {{bots|deny=AWB}}. ― Qwerfjkltalk 18:09, 12 November 2021 (UTC)

Many of these edits were helpful. An SBN, however, is not the same thing as an ISBN (history discussed here), leading to the errors seen here. Also, although the bot's edit description noted that "Ordinal numbers should be in regular text, not inside tags", the tags that were used were to maintain the formatting of the source. --Usernameunique (talk) 23:28, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

@Usernameunique Hi, thanks for reporting this! You can stop this bot (and any other AWB bot) from re-editing the page by adding {{Bots|deny=AWB}} anywhere in the page (an invisible comment will help). You can see the related discussions above this section. Regarding the ISBN → SBN change, you might want to follow this up at WT:AWB, as it is part of AWB's Genfixes. ― Qwerfjkltalk 23:37, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

Question from SimDefinitions (20:19, 14 November 2021)

Hi! It's not letting me write anything when editing texts. The keyboard's not popping up and I don't know what's wrong. --SimDefinitions (talk) 20:19, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

@SimDefinitions Hi, can you describe the exact steps to reproduce this, including the browser and device? I presume from The keyboard's not popping up you're on mobile. ― Qwerfjkltalk 20:55, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

Question from HELLO IM NAZEEF (16:40, 16 November 2021)

Hello. Can you please help me with: 1. How to upload an image while editing an article on mobile?

2. How to make a template while editing an article on mobile? --HELLO IM NAZEEF (talk) 16:40, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

@HELLO IM NAZEEF:
  1. You can try the mobile app, which I believe is the easiest way to upload images.
  2. Add a link to the template (you can do this in your sandbox) e.g. [[Template:Red-linked template]]Template:Red-linked template. Then, click on the link, and add the wikitext. You may find Help:Templates of use.
