Ohio Department of Transportation images

edit

I've noticed that you tagged a couple of images produced by the ODOT as being {{NoRightsReserved}}, however, unless you created the images yourself, you don't have the right to relicense them and they're likely to be deleted. They probably qualify as fair use, but you need to specify such and use a proper tag. Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 12:57, 21 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Deleted image

edit

It didn't appear that the explicit permission was to allow "anyone" to use the image, and not just Wikipedia. And also, I did not delete the image, another administrator deleted it. Perhaps you can explain to me more about this explicit permission. If it really does apply to all images from the Ohio Department of Transportation, I could create a new template for that case.Peter O. (Talk) 04:19, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

The source - [1] - says "To download, reproduce, use and/or distribute these images for commercial use – other than news reporting –you must request permission from COTA in writing." This is not "no rights reserved"; it is not an acceptable license for Wikipedia. --NE2 14:19, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Please stop or you will be blocked. Wikipedia does not accept non-commercial licenses; see [2]. Thank you. --NE2 17:43, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Excuse me, but I believe I made it clear that I DO have permission from COTA for this image to be freely distributed and edited by any person, as long as I attributed the author, which I did. If you have an issue with this, feel free to contact COTA. The e-mail address is on the website. Stop changing the image before you verify this information. Thank You. --Polypmaster 18:09, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Blocked

edit

In case you had not realised it, uploading images with false or misleading copyright and licensing information places the project in legal jeopardy. Look at all the notices above - you have not responded to a single one, but you have reverted edits to the image pages noting problems of image licensing. You are now blocked form editing and will remain so until such time as you begin to address the problem. Guy (Help!) 11:14, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Excuse me, but I believe I have addressed all possible legal issues for my uploaded images. I did not reply to most of the problems because I did realize I had to. I added the proper licensing tags and source info as far as I can tell. If there are some issues remaining I am confused, because unless I have to show you an exact copy of every email I have verifying the license for the images, I have provided enough information. I thank you for blocking me without looking at the images. If you are going to spend the time to block me, why don't you verify the current status of the images. And for your information, there would not be these lingering legal issues if your website provided simple and concise information on such issues. I understand the setup of the articles, but it took me an hour to find the proper license, as the pop-up list does not include all licenses. Thank you, and I hope to hear from you soon.
The popup list does not include the licenses that apply to these images because those licenses are not allowed on Wikipedia. An image needs to be acceptable for use on Wikipedia and elsewhere, including in for-profit publications. --NE2 18:41, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Attribution as far as i can tell covers everything including for-profit. I do not understand how it doesnt.
However, "attribution" is not the license these images are released under. The source for Image:Cota bus.jpg says "To download, reproduce, use and/or distribute these images for commercial use – other than news reporting –you must request permission from COTA in writing." --NE2 19:58, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
DUDE! I am aware of that. That is why I e-mailed COTA regarding the situation. I got permission from them prior to uploading it. I am sorry I did not have the proper license marked originally, but I always had permission from COTA. I made that clear in my image summary. You should have read the source info before repeatedly reverting the image.
What was the permission for? Does it include other for-profit organizations using it? Wikipedia-only permission is not enough. --NE2 11:34, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it is permission for any use by any non or for-profit oganizations or any other person, as long as image is attributed to COTA. The license is for http://www.cota.com/images/photo_library/buses/fixed_route_sm.jpg only. As I said, I do in fact have permission, as I do for all the images I uploaded. I appologize for the problems, but it is very difficult to navigate and find the proper licensing info on Wikipedia. Attribution is not in the pop-up list, and I had to search around just to find it. I hope this clears everything up, and all of my images should have proper summary and licensing info. If I should provide more detailed info than I have currently on any of my uploaded images, please let me know.

<<unblock|All images should have proper licensing information now. While I always recieved proper permission for all images, I did not display proper licensing due to difficulty finding what the proper license should be.>>

Can you post the email you got to confirm that the permission is for any use? Thank you. --NE2 22:01, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it is [email protected].
Not your email address, but the email you received from COTA. --NE2 03:04, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ian,

You may use a picture. Please forward me the web site/web page that the image will be used for.

From: IAN FRANCIS [[email protected]] To: Palmer, John W. Subject: photgraph usage

I am a member of Wikipedia and I would like to use the image of your COTA bus for the COTA article. Because Wikipedia is a freely-edited website, the license for use on Wikipedia must include the possibility that the image could be edited or reproduced by any person, for-profit, or non-profit company. Please contact me with your decision. Thank you.

-Ian Francis [email protected]

I don't think Ian understood what you meant, since he specifically asked what page it would be used on. I'm going to ask on Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems; please allow others to weigh in. Thank you. --NE2 03:57, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have the remaining replies. This makes it more clear I believe:

Ian,

Yes, you may use the picture under the terms described in your original e-mail. I would like to be clear that this agreement applies only to the picture discussed, which I took to mean Fixed Route small. I appreciate you asking first.

Thanks,

John

Here is the address for the COTA article in Wikipedia. Thank you very much. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Ohio_Transit_Authority

I hope this is sufficient. If not, I can e-mail Mr. Palmer again, or just take my own picture of a COTA bus, which if this is insufficient, would be easier. Thanks.
That's probably fine; you should add that to either the image description page or the image talk page. --NE2 04:45, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Craa logo.jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Craa logo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 03:59, 11 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Polypmaster. An automated process has found and removed an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, and thus is being used under fair use that was in your userspace. The image (Image:ColumbusOH.gif) was found at the following location: User:Polypmaster. This image or media was attempted to be removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media was replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. Please find a free image or media to replace it with, and or remove the image from your userspace. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 22:39, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Columbus Convention Logo.JPG

WikiProject Ohio Newsletter

Issue II - May 2008
From the editor:

Here's Issue II of the project newsletter. We're trying to decide if this is sinking or floating. If you would like to contribute to next month's newsletter please jump right in at the News Desk! Have a great May.

The Ohio Portal

The maintainers of the Ohio Portal are looking to get it to featured status. They would like to ask all project members to help improve it any way they can. What needs to be done most is the supplying of selected articles and images.

Selected Article: Indian Head Rock

There is a eight ton rock in Ohio that was removed from the Ohio River. This rock is known as the Indian Head Rock Dating back to the early 1800’s, this rock was seen sticking out of the Ohio River and used as a navigational mark for barges along the river. The names of citizens from the town of Portsmouth, Ohio are carved into the rock from the late nineteenth a early twentieth centuries. Some of the names were of well known families from Ohio. They would swim out to the rock, have their picture taken with it or simply carve their names into it.
With the advent of the Locks and Dams along the Ohio River, the rock eventually was submerged, but the legend lived on. A gentleman from Ironton, Ohio located the rock after searching a very long time for it, and he and a crew of scuba divers recovered the rock and took it to the shore to be donated to Ohio for historical value.
After hearing the news about the rock being removed, Kentucky introduced legislation against the removal of the rock. They also want the diver who found it to be prosecuted for removing the rock. Kentucky owns the greatest part of the land the river runs on. Even the Army Corp. of Engineers got involved as to how to move the rock without damaging it. Kentucky wants to have it returned to the river.

From the editor:

This is the third edition of the WikiProject Ohio newsletter. If you have any project announcements feel free to drop them by the NewsDesk. It's request that you watchlist our talk page; so you can chime in on current discussions. Have a great June!

The Ohio Portal

The maintainers of the Ohio Portal are looking to get it to featured status. They would like to ask all project members to help improve it any way they can. What needs to be done most is the supplying of selected articles and images.

Getting the Project Moving
  • WikiProject Ohio as an entity doesn't have as much action as other state projects. For this reason it has been proposed that the inactive WikiProject Ohio Townships be added as our taskforce. There is a !poll going on at WT:OH and your opinion is essential in the matter!
  • Stepshep has also proposed sending an invite to everyone in Category:Wikipedians in Ohio with an invite to join the project. If you are already a member you would not receive the notice of course. Once again, please note your opinion on the project talkpage.

The Central Avenue Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located at 201 to 338 Central Avenue in Dayton, Ohio. It consists of late 19th and 20th Century Revival-style houses as well as late Victorian-style houses, which were all originally single-family residences.

On December 16, 1982, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Each month a new Ohio related stub is the selected article. If you have a new stub created feel free to nominate it at the NewsDesk.

File permission problem with File:Cmh_terminal_map.JPG

edit

File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Cmh_terminal_map.JPG. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to [email protected], stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to [email protected].

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MBisanz talk 08:06, 5 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

An exciting opportunity to get involved!

edit

As a member of the Aviation WikiProject or one of its subprojects, you may be interested in testing your skills in the Aviation Contest! I created this contest, not to pit editor against editor, but to promote article improvement and project participation and camraderie. Hopefully you will agree with its usefulness. Sign up here, read up on the rules here, and discuss the contest here. The first round of the contest may not start until September 1st-unless a large number of editors signup and are ready to compete immediately! Since this contest is just beginning, please give feedback here, or let me know what you think on my talkpage. - Trevor MacInnis contribs 03:50, 23 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Announcement

edit

Hello! I'm The Arbiter, one of the coordinators for WikiProject Zoo. I am proud to announce the launch of a new portal: Portal:Zoos and Aquariums! ZooPro, ZooFari, and I worked hard to create a new portal for information on zoos, aquariums, and the associated projects and articles on Wikipedia. If you could head on over, take a look at our work, and maybe learn some more about zoos and Wikiproject Zoo, it would be great! Cheers and Happy Editing!

File permission problem with File:Glass city skyway.gif

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Glass city skyway.gif. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. :Jay8g Hi!- I am... -What I do... WASH- BRIDGE- WPWA - MFIC- WPIM 00:51, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
