Orbital Visualization Software

edit

Hi Phoenix, I was very impressed by your visualizations and was interested to know what software you're using. Pengooose (talk) 05:22, 26 February 2021 (UTC)PengoooseReply

Thanks for adding the visualizations to the Janus page! Nrl103 (talk) 16:49, 1 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

I would also like to know about the software. Is it self-made or is it a tool published by one of the space agencies? Thank you for your visualisations! Erentar2002 (talk) 13:14, 15 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Add mine to the queries list. Seems like they doesn't want us to know, but that's okay. Footy2000♡; 16:32, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

I guess that he has an ad-hoc tool that he slightly reworks for each animation. I have tried to create a generic tool and I can tell you that it is not very easy - you can try mine from https://github.com/mmomtchev/orbitron

F5/EF5 tornado map

edit

I would like to suggest some a slight change to the map you recently added to List of F5 and EF5 tornadoes. The title at the top of the map should be changed from "EF5 Tornado 1950-2019" to "U.S. F5 and EF5 Tornadoes, 1950-2019" since tornadoes prior to 2007 were rated on the Fujita scale rather than the Enhanced Fujita scale, and because it does not show tornadoes from outside the U.S. TornadoLGS (talk) 18:21, 3 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Similar changes should be made to the maps you added to List of North American tornadoes and tornado outbreaks, Tornadoes in the United States and Tornadoes of 2019. I'd make the changes myself, but I don't have access to the original files you used to make the maps. Also, is there a reason you excluded F0/EF0 tornadoes from the latter two maps? TornadoLGS (talk) 18:30, 3 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@TornadoLGS: Thank you for the suggestions. I updated the maps. Also I added EF0 which I failed to extract from CSV files.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 04:06, 4 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Horizons batch data url

edit

Hello Phoenix7777, I see you added a Horizons batch data url to 2020 QG showing the orbit change. Do you know how to do that for the Horizons geocentric distance of 2014 MV67 for the date of 2022-03-22 with Table Settings of 20,39? Then batch URL could be properly archived at web.archive.org. Thank you. -- Kheider (talk) 13:07, 9 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Kheider: The requested url is as follows: (See HORIZONS Batch-Interface)
https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/horizons_batch.cgi?batch=1&COMMAND='2014+MV67'&MAKE_EPHEM='YES'&TABLE_TYPE='OBSERVER'&START_TIME='2022-1-1'&STOP_TIME='2022-12-31'&STEP_SIZE='1%20days'&QUANTITIES='20,39'&CSV_FORMAT='YES'&CENTER='500'&REF_PLANE='Ecliptic'&REF_SYSTEM='J2000'&OUT_UNITS='AU-D'&VEC_TABLE='1'&OBJ_DATA='NO
You can change START_TIME, STOP_TIME and STEP_SIZE as you wish. According to the result, the date of close approach in 2022 seems August 22.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 21:25, 9 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

COVID-19 pandemic data

edit

Hi. I noticed that this template is already being updated by TolBot. However, this template is still being updated manually. Interest in the topic area has already decreased, but fewer editors are updating more countries. Doing manual updates has already become useless because the difference between the numbers is insignificantly small. As a solution, Tol is planning to introduce automated updates by letting TolBot do the updates once every day. The necessary data is already centralised here. Would you support the implementation of automated updates? Also, can this idea convince other editors that doing manual updates "on time" is no longer necessary? LSGH (talk) (contributions) 01:26, 10 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@LSGH: There is already [[Template:COVID-19 data]] which is being updated by TolBot. So it is relatively easy to create [[Template:COVID-19 pandemic data]] by removing vaccine columns. Problems is as discussed at [[User talk:Tol/Archives/2021/September#COVID-19 pandemic data]], 1. "recoveries column" can be removed. 2. Daily update is acceptable. I personally think the recoveries column is unnecessary and Our World in Data also thinks so. As for daily update, three recent editors User:NickBerlin87, User:Carbonitrous and User:Shellwood's opinions are valuable. Anyway, I have no experience in Lua, so User:Tol's contribution is necessary.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 10:36, 10 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Many countries and media organisations do not report recoveries, so they can be removed. Tol said that he could put in those numbers, but that might still require manual editing. TolBot does updates once every day, and that should suffice. Letting the bot do the editing means that manual updates will no longer be needed. Perhaps we can also ask for the opinion of other editors who are active in the topic area? LSGH (talk) (contributions) 03:11, 11 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
If I try to seek consensus for the change, can I follow how this discussion was done? Should I use a more formal process? LSGH (talk) (contributions) 04:06, 17 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

James Webb Telescope Animation

edit

@Phoenix7777: Hi. I was very impressed by your James Webb Telescope animation for the orbit relative to the Earth and Sun. I tried to recreate it using NASA's Horizons System data for JWST. But somehow I am not getting the same plot as you. Specifically, the L2 Halo orbit with respect to the Earth bends itself in the middle of the ellipse and creates somewhat of a V-shaped orbit. Do you know the cause of this? And, perhaps would it be fine if you could share your source code? Thanks.

Tomodrone (talk) 01:54, 18 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

The halo orbit appears round only in a rotating frame of reference. If you get a horseshoe, this is normal, this is how it should be if you are using a celestial frame of reference. Mmom (talk) Mmom (talk) 21:27, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of MLCommons

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on MLCommons, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. The article List of Nobel laureates from the European Union has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This list is not really necessary, already covered by List of Nobel laureates by country. In addition the definition of "List of Nobel laureates from the European Union" is very debatable.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. List of Nobel laureates from the European Union moved to draftspace

edit

An article you recently created, List of Nobel laureates from the European Union, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. Re: Kihei fires

edit

I don't know how committed you are to expanding this, but there were anywhere from two to three evacuations in Kihei. One in Ohukai, another in Maui Meadows, and then a third one, which I believe was Kaiwahine Village. The first two should be easy to verify, but I don't think the Kaiwahine evac went through the official system, or it may have been part of the Ohukai evac, I'm not sure. But the Ohukai and Maui Meadows evac can be confirmed as those alerts were official from the County (or emergency management, or whatever). Viriditas (talk) 11:40, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Viriditas: Thank you for your concern about my edit. I edited many wildfire articles based on the burned area. In the 2023 Hawaii wildfires, Kihei is the largest wildfire in terms of acres burned. So I edited it to an independent section.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 12:02, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
I am not concerned with your edits. You are doing good. I was talking about expanding the content, but no worries, I can talk about the burned area instead. Are you sure Kihei is the largest wildfire in terms of acres burned? I think there might be an issue with the definitions here. Do you mean Upcountry Maui above Kihei? In any case, what are the numbers? I looked at your map and while I'm sure the model is based on a particular date, it doesn't reflect the location of the actual fires. In any case, you have me interested. How many acres burned in Kihei? Viriditas (talk) 12:08, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Viriditas: I am sorry, I don't know the burned areas of any wildfires in Maui. I usually use National Interagency Fire Center to create perimeters for wildfires. However they are not interested in the fires in Maui. So I used Fire Information for Resource Management System. Spitzer Space Telescope animation

edit

Hello, I noticed you added this animation a few years ago.

Spitzer orbits the Sun somewhat "behind" Earth, so I cannot see how this spiral around Earth could possibly represent Spitzer's Earth-trailing solar orbit.

Icek~enwiki (talk) 17:26, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Icek~enwiki: When a spacecraft is trailing the Earth's orbit, it is seen circling around the Earth once a year. If the spacecraft's orbital period around the Sun is longer than the Earth, its orbit around the Earth becomes a spiral orbit.

Earth's rotation in orbit animations

edit

Hi, thank you for your orbit animations. Would you consider showing Earth's rotation in the Earth-centered inertial plots, please? It'd help readers understand the apparent twists in the orbits when represented in a frame co-rotating with Earth. I imagine showing the Earth-centered Earth-fixed Cartesian axes. Thank you. fgnievinski (talk) 04:07, 4 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I think you are referring to animations of Quasi-Zenith Satellite System#Satellites. I think you know the coordinate systems very well and It is very resonable request. However, very technical reason, it is difficult to impliment your request to my program. I will put your request for future improvement of my program. In other case, there is a quite naive question that Sun never orbit around Earth by User:Qwerty0 and User:Kiwiz1338 who have no knowledge of the coordinates systems and believe Heliocentrism. ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 10:31, 4 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
No it was understood clearly it was Earth centered and was my perception after looking at the NASA Small-Body Database Lookup orbital viewer and couldn't see the relationship. Irrespective, maybe an animation seen from the ecliptic plane would be cool as so far it's only top down. Would add some encyclopedic value which is what we should strive for. Thank you for your animations. Kiwiz1338 (talk) 11:57, 4 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I asked why there's an animation showing the Sun orbiting the Earth because that's what it appears to show. The animation doesn't label its reference frame. Most assume that if an animation doesn't specify, then the default is showing a Sun-centered inertial reference frame. Most readers aren't even aware of any other reference frame. That's what made this particularly confusing. Even if it was labeled, I don't think this odd reference frame is useful in 99% of articles. Qwerty0 (talk) 16:44, 6 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for considering the suggestion. Maybe a more practical alternative would be to show a geostationary orbit in the same
plot as another orbit (e.g., Tundra-type orbit). It'd help to illustrate Earth's rotation. fgnievinski (talk) 00:16, 7 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
