Hi, you are doing a truly excellent job! No need to apologize for anything (I am not even sure what are you apologizing for). We really badly need someone with native grasp of English. I myself make tons of mistakes and I would love if someone could clean it up. I set up the reference in the cuisine section. It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it. Shortages?

Hello! How are you? I noticed that you edited article Lithuanians with this particular sentence - Perhaps as a result of the shortages, the Lithuanians... - AFAIK Lithuanians do not suffer from any shortages or maybe I understand something wrongly? Stubs

There are 3 ways to deal with red links:

1. create a stub and hope someone will expand it
2. point to external site
3. do nothing and leave red link to someone else to take care of
4. don't link anywhere, remove the [[ ]] and pretend there is no need for such article.

What to do really depends on your personal preferences. All are fine, but 1 and 3 are most common.

Stub is a short article that could and should be expanded. The whole long thing is on Wikipedia:Stub. Officially, there is no such thing as "sub-stub." There was a proposal a long time ago, but it died. I just like the idea of it and find it useful. It is a class of stubs that are extremely short (1-3 sentences). See also article grading scheme. Ah, images. See, "Wikipedia-only" permison in not acceptable because Wikipedia is free (as in everybody can copy its content) and wants to remain such. So if you ask someone, you need to ask to release the image under GFDL, which means that anybody else can use the image for any purpose (note that "any" also includes commercial, and that stops most people). I don't have a lot of experience asking sites for permissions and I don't think there are any that granted "blanket" permissions, but what I gather is that most people don't really know copyrights and are quick to grant "Wikipedia-only." In short, it's quite messy. Easiest and cleanest way is to take pics yourself and release under some free license.

Quick tip: if you want to intent a para don't put a spece in front of

Thank you! I am really in no hurry, there is no chance I am going to finish it up till next weekend. Thanks for the notes. I know it needs more maps, pictures, timelines and all the other nice things. But that's for later, when the text will be finished. Also the lead will have to be adjusted quite a bit once the text is finalized.

I have little quotable geographic information on Aukštojas at hand right now. Its general orientation is south-east from Vilnius but it is by no means exact by compass. At the age of perhaps 9-10 years, I visited Juozapinė Hill as a member of the group of cyclists who went from the Cathedral Square in Vilnius to Juozapinė Hill. I was assigned the task of carrying some soil from the center of Vilnius (perhaps from the hill of the Gediminas Castle, I can't remember now) in a little decorated bag and spilling it at Juozapinė. As the then-unnamed-and-uknown Aukštojas is near Juozapinė, the overall picture was boring beige hills with little prominence. I'll perhaps do a cycling trip sometime to take the picture of Aukštojas just for the record.

BTW, what part of the US are you from? I spent a couple of weeks during my honeymoon this summer in Utah. Enjoyed every moment! Also visited Las Vegas, New York and northern Arizona. We two had a great roadtrip by car all by ourselves. I was particularly amazed by the real mountains that I saw for the first time in my life spent in the Lithuanian flatlands.Juozas Rimas 21:46, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Regarding Migūnai forestry and Aukštojas Hill: I have no information on the forestry, just took the information from http://www.miskai.lt/index.php?id=67. As far as I understand, all forests in Lithuania are divided into forestries "girininkijos" which are in turn divided into smaller units "eiguvos".Juozas Rimas 20:43, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Bigos

Sauerkraut is essential for Polish bigos. I'd expect it to be in Lithuanian bigos as well, as the "cuisine culture" is largely shared between the two nations. But let's leave it to Lithuanian editors to confirm or correct this. I'd be surprised to see bigos in "the West" (Western Europe or the US). I think its preparation recipe was actually against the EU regulations (because good bigos needs to be old and reheated many times). It's certainly a dish that you can order in any restaurant in Poland, but I've never met it in Lithuania. --Lysy^talk 18:41, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Hello! First about Lithuanian cuisine article, I suggest also adding kučiukai (or šlyžikai) also it is quite traditional some sort of desert :) , talking about borrowed dishes I missed – šašlykai which should be roasted on birchen woods. Besides the century (17) of potatoes, when were introduced in Lithuania, should be closely examined. About photo of honey Image:Runny hunny.jpg, sadly I do not have Lithuanian beehives, but you can request this photo in proper section of wikiprject Lithuania. About word biciuliai, yes this word is still used to describe the good friends. I remember that Valdas Adamkus received a beehives with bees from Viktor Yushchenko. About word numire – this word is most common when dealing with death, it also used to animals and humans; plus there is another word pastipo which is used to describe death of bigger animals like dogs, but this word is not used lets say for bees (personally I did not heard that anybody would say mano bites pastipo); there are few more words. Hello! I reread and rethought issues regarding paintings and photos. And I think that then you have or own painting and by taking photo of it and uploading taken photo in wikipedia you should placed a tag some sort like PD-self with proper explanation in Source place. There are guidelines to how to deal with vandalism and I encourage you to follow these no matter how angry or affronted you may feel.

Also, unsigned messaged are considered rude. Please sign your message and date stamp it by adding four tildes (~~~~) after any message left on a user's talk page.

Does this protocol apply to all cases?

No, there are exceptions. In this instance, the worst warning I would use would be:

{{subst:blatantvandal}} ~~~~

You can use {{subst:test4im}} ~~~~ as a first warning "for extreme cases of vandalism". The tendency would be to class extreme vandalism as multiple edits to multiple articles which are designed to evade detection. The person would subtly change names, dates, add nonsense masquerading as facts, and perhaps delete some text. This type of edit is not easy to identify as vandalism and often goes undetected. When it is discovered we tend to check all the other recent contributions for that user or IP. If multiple instances of this type of vandalism is discovered then we would post a "This is the only warning you will receive!" message since it is obvious that it was a calculated act of vandalism.

Swearing and profanity are not classed as extreme vandalism, nor is it always blatant vandalism. Often, new users will read an article with which they strongly disagree and add comments to the article itself, sometimes expressing themselves in colourful language. In these instances we might not even warn them, instead we point them to the discussion page after reverting their edits. This is the way we "assume good faith". Only if the user persists and shows that they are intent on damaging the articles do we escalate to calling the edits vandalism.

Sometimes it's hard to wait for a bot to come along and fix it.

You don't have to wait for a bot to fix it, you are encouraged to fix vandalism when you find it. The bots are far from perfect and they often miss instances of vandalism that are not immediately obvious.

Merge of Phantom Ranch

I got it to redirect properly now. The redirect statement redirected the article to itself. Not a problem.

I do have pictures of Phantom Ranch. I thought the existing pics in the article looked good, but I can find a couple of my best ones to compliment it. I will be down there again in January (camping), and I hope to get some good wintry-looking pictures before I freeze out there! I have read Death in Grand Canyon, though I waited some time before doing so (easily recognizing the irony of having the book in my car should something happen to me on one of my hikes, and so resisted buying it for more than a year.) However, I found it full of cautionary tales on what not to do while hiking in the Grand Canyon or other desert environments, so my apprehension was unnecessary. • Added something neat to Hermit Trail. There was a template to use, {{geoscale-US-mountain}} which links to TopoZone, Google Maps, TerraServer, etc. Scale for TopoZone is not ideal for trails, so I'm thinking of adding a Template:geolinks-US-trails, changing the sacle to what is used on your link on Phantom Ranch. Well, maybe not entirely but thanks for your concern. I can see that I've been spoiled by my boss, husband, friends, and children, to the point where it's a shock to not get cooperation, thanks, hugs, etc. These things are not forthcoming in Wikipedia - it's just not a very warm place. It's ok to chat. I need to do that more often myself :) I printed out the Jungle, maybe I'll read it - first few pages seem hard to follow though. I found about it like a year ago when one of my classmates was studying it for the English class. I was so surprised! Somehow no one talks about it in Lithuania.

On evolution. You should have met me before I came to the U.S. I am completely new person now. On WP, you should have met me before the PL-LT wars started. I was a lot friendlier and nicer back then. Now I feel like a grumpy old lady :) WP is a very hostile place to live in. So many strangers, so many rude people, so many upset people. Add different cultures, education, and opinions, mix in nationalities and bake it in the oven of very limited communication (no face-to-face interaction) and sprinkle with personal issues and you'll get a nice pie called WP community. But for whatever reason (still don't understand myself) that pie is very addictive...

A bright future, you say? Hm, that'd be good. Can I order two to go and do you accept credit cards? :) I don't really know how you came to that conclusion, but hey, thanks. Renata 23:44, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Mind if I pop in here, uninvited ? About the WP community and POV conflicts. It's an eye-opener for me, but you really need a good perspective to appreciate this. After the initial shock, you start to realize, that the conflicting points of view can be often equally justified. One can learn a lot more than from books, all the TV/news crap or even the educated chats with your friends. One has only to often remind oneself that the backgrounds and cultures are different and people can act differently. If only there were less aggression ... A request

Hello,

if you remember, we have had some brief communication on Lithuanian geography. I also noticed you have in some cases proof-read wiki articles related to Lithuania. When you have some spare time, could you take a look at the page on Žirmūnai, my native borough in Vilnius? I co-authored it to make it the most extensive article on Vilnius' boroughs. I know it's weird the article on the Old Town is now smaller :)

By the way, regarding the Žirmūnai article, is there a more suitable word in English instead of "ferry" to convey the idea of the ships cruising in the small Neris River. You can see the ship in one of the photos on the page. "Ferry" sounds like a huge bulky barge which transports people and cars over a big body of water, whereas the ships in Neris are old, relatively small Soviet "cruise" river ships that go to and fro in the river with passengers only. I used the term "motor ship" but I bet it sounded weird, perhaps like jet-ski? :)

Hi, you did a great job on the Žirmūnai article! However, I had to remove the bit from the Age Cohorts which implied that Russians live shorter in Lithuania than Lithuanians - do we have such information? (WHO statistics are on Russia, as a country). I'm also not sure about the attractiveness of Žirmūnai to retirees. From my everyday observations, the high average age comes due to the people who came to live here in the 1960s being very settled. But today, when appartments in Žirmūnai are expensive, many retirees actually sell their appartments and go to a cheaper place to live. What do you think? Juozas Rimas 16:19, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi, when you have time, for the sake of completeness, you could return the interesting figures on the crime rates in the US and Canada to Žirmūnai article. I have just updated the crime statistics, fixing my mistakes. The rate is not 20, but close to 50... I hope I'm not mistaken again. I'm not strong at maths :) Make sure you adjust the US figures down to "per 1,000 residents", because I saw they were given on the "per 100,000 residents" scale. You should take screenshot next time, I would be able to tell much more. As for game - there was a similar game somewhere on WP, long ago, can't find a link. But it depends on which information you need to access from them; they could hold some info which is not protected by copyright. Regarding www.vilnius.lt - it works fine with my tools. Firstly I suggest you to press ctr (and) F5. Sometimes it helps. It is also usefully to have new version of browser, did you tried new Internet Explorer 7? Hi, I don't have much time to work on the article, but I think it is a pretty good idea, just needs A LOT of work. Maybe I will find few minutes over the weekend. Hello again! I read your article and have few suggestion: firstly it would be worth to note about six angle cross, for instance it is used it Order of Vytis: Image:Cross_of_Vytis.jpg, also six angle cross is the symbol of Lithuanian military. In text it is mentioned that Vytis is used and in coins, maybe it worth to place a picture of these coins. Maybe also references should be harmonized a bit, but this is not very important. No, there is no way to count the characters. That message is just a notice that the article might be a bit too long. There is this ancient limit of 32kb that gets ignored all the time, but if the page gets way too long (like 100+kb) then it might be a problem with GA of FA nomination. As an answer to your request of an audio recording on the portal. You can find one here [1] (not sure if the quality is good enough for you). From the same site I got the french traduction I used to update fr:Tautiška giesmė and was planning to add the audio file. But I am a newby with wikipedia and I still didn't investigate how to create the ogg file. I've already asked and got authorisation from the owner of the blog Gilles/Dzilis to use the audio file. As for your technical questions, Kaunas botanical garden needs to be moved/renamed. Go to the article and click on the move tab (between "history" and "watch" tabs atop of an article), type in a new name (this time with the capitals) and click ok. As for Kęstutis Nakas you need to create a redirect. Go to Kestutis Nakas and type in #REDIRECT[[Kęstutis Nakas]]. Note that # is neccesary; if you change what's in between the brackets, it will redirect to a different page. Click save, and you are done. Lesson finished :) Renata 02:08, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Tenses

Even though you did not ask me, "būna" is a present tense. Būti (infinitive) - būna (present) - buvo and būdavo (past) - bus (future). Is just that people usually say "yra" is something is present right here and right now. I think it's similar to English present tense in "festivals happen every now and then." Article Lithuanian nationality law

Thanks for the article Lithuanian nationality law. Unfortunately the law isn't really clear on the matter of possibility or restriction to get dual nationality. I heard also that the law is again been discussed in the seima thus the application of the existing one is put on hold. Perhaps you can confirm that. I should say that I have a direct interest here as we want to get the Lithuanian citizenship for our daughter who get already the French one at birth. Why did you remove the Latin expression Jus sanguinis? Is there restriction on the use of such common Latin sentence in WK? For me at least Jus sanguinis is much more explicit (cf french expression droit du sang) Jmnil 11:18, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Unsuccessful RFA (Request for arbitration, not request for adminship)

I'm truly sorry to find that intellectual honesty and honor are not concepts that Wikipedia recognizes.[2] However, since these concepts are alive and well in universities, research institutions, the US military, and elsewhere, I have faith that they will eventually be recognized here as well. The sooner you understand how the reasoning of those who were the objects of your RFA operates, the less dissapointed you will be. If J.L. had moved to Kaunas in the 1920's, had composed the Lithuanian National Anthem, and had written his Last Will and Testament in prefect Lithuanian, you still would have been told he was born in Poland and was Polish. Now he can rest in peace in the English Wikipedia as being born in "Poland" (at the time Russia) and is both a Pole and a "Russian" to boot. But as always, during these discussions you can count on a few pearls being relayed during their arguments. Here are two of my favorites: the first from the response at your RFA, where the commentator "not wanting to create too much bad blood between Polish and Lithuanian editors" says speaking of the Lithuanian wikicommunity ....that it seems to be a tad touchy when it comes to Polish-Lithuanian relations and people born in Vilna in the times when the town was not yet a part of Lithuania... Not yet a part of Lithuania? Saving the best for last, you might remember this one from the J.L. talk page...I'm beginning to think that the small Lithuanian club on Wikipedia has some serious problem with understanding that not everyone who was ever born in Poland is Lithuanian by default. Polonica

FYI, I didn't add most, if any, links to Polonica.net; in Treaty of Warsaw (1920) it found itself as I simply copied the refs from other articles, assuming with good faith that they use reliable, verifed sources. The main page of polonica.net, which I just checked for the first time, is indeed disturbing, and I certainly agree it would be preferable not to use any materials published by it - however the question is, was the article about Piłsudski published (solely) by it, or did this website simply chose to reprint an article found elsewhere on the web? In that second case we should it would not make the article unreliable (if an extremist website copies and reproduces reliable content, it doesn't make the content less reliable). Based on the information here (the site, related to Polish Ministry of Education, seems rather reliable), this article was first published on another website (now 404); its Polish translation (or original) is also reproduced for example here (I don't see anything controversial about that site). Nonetheless I have replaced most of the refs to this article with more reliable refs, to be on the safe side; if you think any fact in Wikipedia referenced to that website is dubious or not-neutral, feel free to tag it as such in the article and raise the issue on talk. I read the article and I completely agree with the notes left on Talk:Cheddar Gorge and Caves. I know this article can be so much better. The prose is choppy (look who's talking :), reads like a tourist broshure, most information is trivial and the real substence is just touched upon (like the cave description is just 6 sentences). Thanks! Looks better now! Still reads rather odd for an article about a European native species to be in American English; might be best (per the Wiki MOS) to avoid words with spelling differences (favor/favour, paralyze/paralyse, etc.). It also needs a couple of formatting changes; scientific names should be in italics with the genus name capitalised and the species name in lower case, e.g.: Grapholita molesta (which also has a typo!) - MPF 18:34, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

The prize is awarded rather than won, but it's may be just my native Lithuanian language connotations. Britannica

Since we cite better quality sources, I think we can remove the Britannica entry ([4]). If you want to keep it, could you add the author to it? The "better" Britannica quotes are attributed to reliable authors; the anonomious ones we can really do well without. On another note, I think we could safely remove all quotations that are in the article - or rather, move them to Wikiquote. Perhaps we could add a few quotations to the article - like in William Shakespeare article - but those should be reasonably neutral. NYT

I used databases that I have access to thru my college's library. And it's actually a pretty cool source - while I always have to be careful about their accuracy (as they describe events that just happened or are about to happen), the articles are rather balanced and focussed more on factual information. They also discuss international situation a lot, gives good sense who the events were viewed at the time, and provides some interesting details. I am also impressed by accuracy - even long Lithuanian names are spelled correctly and interpretations of events pretty much the same as in books written fifty years later with the benefit of the hindsight. The only drawback is that it takes forever to research it... Last night's edit took me almost 6 hours!

Photos

I would suggest looking at the List of Chicago Landmarks many articles need photos and many articles might be easier to create with photos. At some point, I hope to get photos of the Kenwood District and North Kenwood District, but do not know the proper points of interest. I would suggest trying to identify points of interest in the Chicago Landmark districts in the area you want to explore. Gosh. The Lithuanian language is soooo complicated...

Tu - is used to address someone who is a close friend, relative, and rather familiar expression. In most cases it does not use name and can be regarded as fignerpointing. In this cas eperson is addressed given name and first person daryti-darai-darote.

Jūs - has some flavour of the status: it is not uncommon to address mother and father (rather old tradition - for example my sister did address our parents Jūs (and sometimes, when speaking to mom she did not use Jūs, and addressed her mama, using first person addressing), I did Tu(it was reversed when it came to autoritah things), but more common it is to use as a respectfull form addressing people older than yoorself, people with social status. And it is addressing to a third person (two heads for siplification: daryti-darai-darote) This distinction can be easily transformed into informal language by the one who's been addressed. Popular forms are - please, don't grow my second head, get easy, my name is * and others. Jūs is mostly followed by surname.

Hence i should address You as Jūs, Novickas.

There is some form "Pats" roughly translated as "You, the one who has ownership, and therefore is independent and sovereighn" - it's formal addressing into someone you do respect, and he told you to get easy, and you can use name, just TU would get too familiar, and breake certain barrier of friendly/famliarity.

There is aslo older form of pats used only in shcools 'Tamsta, derivative from Tavo mylista.

I think for now I'll not go into political usage of the mix of various forms of these addressing formats.

As I've told earlier - it's rather complicated.

Yes there is a verb "tujinti" - it means a disrespectfull bahaviour, i.e. familiarity. To come and address one you do not know as a oldtime fellow. And there are some situations where one is left without epaulet. It's and idiom, not sure whether local Lithianian or Polish, Russian or German... if one is naked (like in the Sauna) they are all as the mother (Eve) let them be, hence equal. While the epaulets are on again situation changes. One might think about it as some sort of Dionisian festival.

Jūs'inimas is slowly going away, but it the non-usage of Jūs still does annoy people, roughly from 30 years on. And people with status. On the other hand I do not feel well if people even 3 or 4 years older than I'm address me Jūs and/or third person. The same goes for my Goddaughter and her brother (my sister's children)- once upon a time their father forced them to call me Jūs, and I do get schizophrenic when she calls me Tu, and he Jūs. Agree, article is good - thank you! The past tense confused me. I assumed that the plant was closed and because the article did not say why it was closed, I tried to look it up. What I came up was not entirely clear, but the plant almost went bankrupt last year, but the government bailed it out. It seems it is still under construction/repairs and will reopen later this year. I't is awarded in Presidential Palace, Vilnius by president himself. There was an exceptoon this year, as the ceremony was held not on Feburary 16th, but earlier (Feburary 12th I think [9], Febrary 15th in 2007 [10]).

As for group of artists - Recipients_of_the_Lithuanian_National_Prize#2004 in 2004 laureate was a string quartet, 19ū9 also string quartet, 1999 piano duo, last year - artists duo.

Until 2003 there was no President institution in Lithuania. I'm mot sure, wheter president was always present since then.

I don't know if you ever went on your picture taking expedition, but I have just discovered the Chicago Historic Resources Survey. You could use this to identify significant buildings in any part of Chicago. It includes all landmarks and many potential landmarks. My Mother is Pure Lithuanian and has a similar name to yours, and seeing your from the USA which mum says she knows that she has cousins who live there and i just thought maybe you would know someone that could help me find out if i do have relatives in usa. Anyways My grandfathers from Klaipėda with the surname navickas. My grandmothers surname is Skiotyte and she is from Marijampolė. I know that they both left during the war (1945) and went to glenelg in South Australia. They were both farming families and I dont know much more than that any further back, but if you know any online Genealogy websites that can help me find out anymore information on my family history or know anyone that can help me please feel free to send me an email.
