Infoboxes

Maybe I've missed something, but I was under the impression that the infobox templating are considered to be more streamlined than a bunch of code in otherwise normally formatted text; furthermore, you seemed (and seem) to be the only one actively working against infobox templates. Template talk:Europe

Hello. On Template talk:Europe you seem to have made a lot of votes, but by each new vote you made, you also deleted the previous vote you had made. It is strange and confusing, so see for yourself. Templates

Regarding the (Flag - Country) templates you created, is there a list somewhere of which countries have which template code? You should be able to find the flag templates by using IS0 3166-1 alpha-3 codes or the IOC country codes. Parmaestro 13:56, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

Yes, unfortunately it was difficult to have one standard like ISO codes because of the nature of Wikipedia. I enjoyed reading some of the pages have you set up such as your personal european integration page. I noticed what would appear to be some small mistakes on it that I did not touch since it is a personal page. I was wondering if you would be interested in joining me and some others in a project to improve the European Union articles in Wikipedia. There is a portal page that has been created that might be of interest to you.

And with the single exception of India, I haven't run into any trouble at all. All states and territories (with the exception of such... "dependencies" as Norfolk Island, Bouvet, ... - I prefer to ignore those) have ISO-conform templates now. Almost all, that is. Nightstallion 21:33, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

• I found it necessary to make the non-ISO Template:country_flag have 3 aliases: flag file name, Wikipedia article name, and text label for display. At present Template:ISO triggers code which only has the first 2 aliases. Should I add the "text label" alias? I think it is better to use the present code, which displays the supplied country code, as that enforces the use of ISO country codes rather than hiding whatever the user typed. (One of the reasons I added "text label" alias is so a reference to the USA 48 star flag would show as "USA" rather than "USA-48", and "USA-MN" shows as "MN".) (SEWilco 03:19, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC))

• SEWilcoBot is initializing the flag data. Going slowly due to new code being tried. I'll get the flag data ready before dealing with the country template set (which were used to seed the data). Note that I tested the templates on {{USA}}. I'm also seeding {{flag}} with those country codes, so the ISO three letter codes will be in place for general use, not only in {{ISO|flag|CountryName}}. • SEWilcoBot is now going through your ISO templates in United Nations member states and converting to {{country}}. I set the delay at 2 minutes, so it will take some hours. Converted flags are slightly larger, as too many details were being lost. All ISO country codes are working (my test page is a tad crowded :-). However, the conversion is using the names in the templates rather than the ISO codes. You mentioned Bouvet Island earlier, and as it has no flag its "flag" is a blank image. And yes, the grammar of Ancient Greek is four or five notches up from Latin - at least in Latin, I'm always sure where the stem of the word ends and where the suffixes start, but in Ancient Greek... ah well. As I told you, I am using a public computer to access Wikipedia, and it happened that the day before yesterday the Internet connection over there had a problem. Then I came again yesterday and the Internet was all right, but I couldn't enter Wikipedia! The only problem I'm frequently experiencing is that after editting and saving the changes, Wikipedia tells me the changes couldn't be saved; after reloading the page I editted, however, the changes are in fact there. Katakana, for fun

Nightstallion, may I suggest that maybe ナイットスタリオン sounds closer to "Nightstallion" than the ナイトスタリオン you're currently using. I only had a year of Japanese, and that was a little while ago, but I like the Katakana you're using! - grubber 12:24, 2005 August 5 (UTC)

While my knowledge of Japanese is actually limitted to translating Japanese CCG cards into English, my knowledge of katakana is very good, and I've up to now seen "night" only seen transliterated as ナイト and never as ナイット (which also makes sense, since in English diphthongs are always "long" vowels, and ッ tends to make the vowel before the affected consonant become shorter to a strong degree (compare ヒット for "hit"). Your katakana sounds more advanced than mine; I cannot recall seeing "night" in Japanese. It sounds like there should be a ッ there simply due to the glottal stop I hear when I say it out loud (to make it sound like night-stallion rather than nights-tallion). Hey, it's your name! Macedonia(ns)/disclaimer poll

There is an ongoing poll here about the use of a Disclaimer stating that "Wikipedia has no official position concerning the use of the name Republic of Macedonia etc.". As in previous cases (most notably the Macedonians/Macedonian Slavs poll) this poll would be decided by grossly nationalistic voting.

The author of the poll told me this:

You are right that the poll was not a good idea, since the NPOV is not subject to negotiations, but I have no way to remove those disclaimers: the Greeks keep reverting them and the rest of world avoids entering in the negotiations of Balkan issues like the plague. I was hoping that the poll would attract some people, but instead it attracted the same old Greeks vs. non-Greeks. bogdan | ^Talk 19:10, 20 August 2005 (UTC)

As a fellow Wikipedian, I can not be more than terrified by this statement. Not surprisingly, the "For the disclaimer" vote is 100% composed of ethnic Greek votes, and currently it is in the lead. It is in my deepest belief that Wikipedia should not mould under the pressure of nationalism (from neither side). That is precisely why I am abstaining of the poll, stating my reasons here.

Please, your possible avoidance of entering in the negotiations of Balkan issues like the plague is causing Balkan disputes to conform to nationalist narratives (logically, to the narrative of the biggest nationality), and this is something that is done in direct opposition to NPOV policy. It is mostly up to neutrals to decide on the issue, and it is only up to them to stop nationalism. So, please, participate in the discussion, or in the poll. --FlavrSavr 15:04, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

Official Languages of Austria

Croatian, Hungarian, and Slovenian (and perhaps other languages) have official status in some municipalities in Austria. Could you please tell me in which ones, if you know. I'm tying to find out for the list of official languages by state page. – Zntrip 03:25, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

Well, no. As far as official languages are concerned, there's only Croatian and Hungarian in Burgenland, and Slovenian in Carinthia, as far as I know. I already corrected that for you. Furthermore, regarding your request about official languages in the Gemeinden, I'm afraid that Statistics Austria couldn't help me with that request; on a second thought, however, I don't think you'd really want to have all Gemeinden with their official languages in a list about official languages worldwide, anyway, or would you? — ナイトスタリオン _ㇳ–ㇰ — 09:59, 26 September 2005 (UTC)

I'm not sure you understand what Gemeinde is - the lowest level. Townships, more or less. There's problaby a couple of thousands of them. Even if only one percent of them have an official language not official in the whole Bundesland, that'd be a lot. Alright, I've researched it a bit now. The information I haven't been able to obtain for you is irrelevant for a simple reason: Amtssprachen (i.e. languages in which you can officially converse with local authorities) do not have the the same rights as official languages. You've got all official languages you need already. Whether some in Hintertupfing can write to his Gemeinderat in Czech and receive an answer in the Czech is not related to official languages, but only to Amtssprachen, so we can finally resolve this. ;) — ナイトスタリオン _ㇳ–ㇰ — 23:03, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

Glad to help. However, there's two things that are ambiguous now after your changes: Firstly, it's not clear whether "statewide" refers to Austria or one of the nine federal states. Secondly, those languages that are both countrywide protected minority languages and regional official languages now do not clearly state this... On the list, statewide always refers to the country. Languages in parenthesis that have a province, state, municipality, etc. inside of them are regional languages in said area. Languages with statewide minority language after them are languages that have minority status throughout the nation. Hope that makes it clearer. (¿€0.02 = Two cents? Not really. The only template that exists for Ancient Greek is the generic "native speaker" one. Well, I don't think it's as cool as being 2500 years old, but for your information, there is a grc-2 template, although there's no one in it, so its category link is red. You'd be the first! There's also a grc-1 with about two dozen people. There's no grc-3 or grc-4. Odd that there's is a grc native. By the way, finish this translation of the grc template for me. I think it says something like "Dead is the ancient Greek language." and then the second sentence I got nothing. Correcting other people's comments

Thank you for going through all the effort of converting Champions League links to UEFA Champions League. However, although I understand it was done in good faith, could you please refrain from changing comments people have made on talk pages (such as mine on Talk:UEFA Cup). Partly because it damages the historical context that the comments were made in (i.e. when Champions League really did point to the relevant page), and partly because editing other people's comments without their permission, for whatever reason, is strongly discouraged on Wikipedia. At link repair you said that "Nassau and Nassau (disambiguation) need to be switched." Why is that? Also, could I remove your signature from the project page's "Done" section, the flag and katakana are a little distracting and you can always bring up any issues on the disucssion page? Taiwan

In your note, you put Taiwan (Still officially "Republic of China") under possible secession. I know this is a sensative subject, and there are groups of people that support independence. However, about equal size of population in Taiwan leans toward unification.

Yes, but unification's boring. ;) Quite frankly, my notes are very far from NPOV in any way, since I'm mostly in favour of secessionists, just for neophilia's sake; I also have the impression that when faced with the two-way choice between officially and finally joining a decidedly undemocratic country like the PRC and trying to go it alone officially, one would tend to choose the latter. ::shrugs::

Also, you said "I'm rather unhappy with the wikipedia policy of "if English name and official name clash, use English name"; therefore I support the following page moves". So I'm just curious if that applies to Republic of China as well.

Mh, good point. In this case, I suppose I'd go with ISO, which uses Taiwan.

The currency moves

Hi, I think we can safely assume that the currency moves should be carried out. I did a few yesterday, many of them don't need an admin. Unfortunately, WP:RM is starting to run up a huge backlog maybe because the currency moves look a bit daunting. I think the Rùm vote which I parttook in should also be closed, but unfortunately one support vote should be discounted so it's going the "wrong" way. Anyway, enough for tonight. Not really. Chechnya is tshe-tshni-ya, while Czechia is either tshe-ki-ya or tshe-khi-ya (with kh like ch in Loch), depending on how well you can pronounce it. Urban legend, though there are a lot variations of t-shirt designs with road signs stating "no kangaroos allowed" and the text "No kangaroos in Austria" beneath it.

Re: Bot

Well, I'll advise you as far as I can. Basically, I use the Python bot framework at http://pywikipediabot.sourceforge.net and run one of the scripts supplied, specifically solve_disambiguation.py, with certain arguments that cause it to move all references from one page to another, aiding me in cleaning up the backlog on WP:RM.

I'm not doing anything particularly special. However, that framework contains a lot of scripts for a lot of purposes, so you may well find something you need. Don't forget to read WP:BOTS first and request permission on the talk page for a trial, once you know what your bot will be doing. Rob Church ^Talk 07:36, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

For countries/regions with the terms "Republic" or "Islands" in their short name, correct grammar is "Flag of the Czech Republic", not "Flag of Czech Republic". Image names are expected to follow the same naming rules as article, AFAIK, so this grammar mistake should be corrected, and it'll be much easier with a bot. Furthermore, I've managed to upload basically all the national flags in svg format, and those should replace the earlier png versions, so the bot could be put to further use... Regarding your sig image.

Hi, I notice Image:Austria flag large.png have been marked as redundant, I'd recomend you change your sig to use Image:Flag of Austria.svg instead. That way new instances of the png flag won't keep poping up when you sign things, and it's easier to replace all use of the image somewhere down the line (I'm toying with the idea of making a "redundant image replacement bot" myself). Mergers & acquisitions

Well, as you know, the October referendum was successful, with the majority voting for the merger. The lawmakers are currently working on a draft of the constitutional law that will be the basis of new Kamchatka Krai. I have not heard anything new on the actual merger date yet (I think it's still sometime in 2007), but I might have missed the news. The final date will probably depend on how fast the draft is signed into law, among other things.

As for the flags—sorry, I was not actively looking for them. By the way, the ones which are already in Wikipedia—where did they come from? Is {{PD-flag}} still something we can slap on pretty much any flag image? Ah, I think I've got the root of the problem: As of 1999 or so, they didn't even have official flags (according to fotw.net), and it's apparently difficult to get information from Russian sources when you're asking them in English... Flag of China

Hi, just wondering, is there any particular reason why you're moving Image:Flag of Peoples Republic of China.svg to Image:Flag of China.svg? The PRC / ROC arrangement was set up for NPOV reasons. Hi, I am also a Chinese Wikipedian. There is no such state named "China" in the world, there exist only two states with "China" in their names: "People's Republic of China" (whose capital currently resides in Beijing) and "Republic of China" (whose capital currently resides in Taipei). Although the former is commonly referred as "China", and the latter is now commonly referred as "Taiwan", these abbreviations are never formal or appropriate for a reliable and trusted encyclopedia. Instead, they stir up disputes among people from both sides (in both PRC and ROC, or say in both Mainland China and Taiwan). Wikipedia should be sensitive to these matters and carefully maintain NPOV by avoiding referring PRC as China and ROC as Taiwan whenever possible. Well, ..-1 means I can understand the language decently if written down or spoken slowly. Swedish is actually the language I understand with the most difficulty, though I did comprehend what you wrote without using a dictionary. My German and English are at par, my Spanish could still use some improvement if I want to get it at a level comparable to my German and English, Latin and Ancient Greek will likely remain at their respective levels (six years and four years in school, respectively). I understand French, Portuguese, Romanian, and Catalan mostly because they're just Latin/Spanish with lots of orthographical mistakes. ;) I can understand Modern Greek barely, if I know what I'm doing, thanks to my knowledge of Ancient Greek, and I've got a basic grasp of Japanese due to my interest in animé.

Euro coins

Sorry it took a while to reply (I forget sometimes that I've written something on a talk page) but I just thought you might like to know I replied to your reply on the Euro talk page about the coins. I just thought I'd tell you here, just to clear up what I don't get about the phrasing on the coins pages. This is the reply

Sorry, I was also a bit unclear. What I meant was the way officially (in trade) all the old currencies (IEP,FRF,DEM etc.) were replaced in 1999, but in cash, they weren't replaced until 2002. That is what I think is wrong, it doesn't say if it means (using the Estonian Kroon as an example)

• in 2006 the Estonian Kroon will cease to trade as EEK and begin trading (still in Estonian notes) as EUR
• in 2006 the Estonian Kroon will cease to trade as EEK changing to EUR, and the cash will come in at the same time
• in 2006 the Estonian Kroon will cease to trade as EEK changing to EUR, and the cash will come in at another point, but this will also be in 2006.

Hi. I'm see you reverted some of my reverts of your edits. That's OK, let me explain what the problem was. When you changed the spelling of some of the referenced articles, you broke the links to them. If you think the articles are incorrectly named, what you should do is move the articles to their correct titles, then go back and fix up the links (using the What links here tool on the left side of the page). In the case of English coin Florin or Double Leopard, I suspect it would be best to rename it to English coin Florin, and make Double Leopard redirect to there. Well, first of all, take some more time. Get more familiar with Wikipedia, participate in the various votes for deletion, in meta-talk, join meaningful discussion at WP:RFC, and so on. And while I don't write as many edit summaries as I should and would like to (I just regularily forget), it would be a substantial bonus for your next nomination if you'd regularily write edit summaries. Yeah, it's still on. I was just a bit disappointed by the initial reaction at Talk:Australia. Great! If there's anything to learn from this: patience is a virtue. This is a huge, but I think worthwile, undertaking: there may be exceptions that require usage of a unique infobox, and opposition generally, but we can deal with it. Recall the HDI project: I was compelled to mount the vote/discussion, etc. after being shut down initially. Even though it took around 3 months, the proof is in the pudding. Portuguese flag in svg format

I've reverted all the image links I've found to your new version of the Portuguese flag, now in svg format. Please, if you are going to change a flag image, please consider changing it to a real flag and not to some kind of badly done sketch, I would hand draw the portuguese flag better than that in .svg. Your contribution to the Haiti election page

First off, thanks for helping out. I used your information to do a lot of back research. There is one problem though, in this edit you put that the municipal elections have been moved to March 5, 2006. I don't doubt that this is true, but I just have not been able to find a source. I have been trying to find sources for all of these changes and making wikinews articles so it looks cleaner, and I have found what I need for all of the other changes, except this one municipal change. Euro coins from pdf, take two

Hi! Today, the National Bank of Slovakia decided on the motifs to be used on Slovak euro coins. I haven't been able to find information about it on the internet, however upon emailing the NBS directly, I quickly received a detailed answer, including a pdf file containing all eight euro coin designs. Could you extract the images from this file, just like you did for the new designs on euro coins? I'd need to email the pdf to you, naturally, since it's not available on the internet AFAIK. Oh ok. I am working on extracting them, but unlike the others, these are on a blue background, AND have been antialiased to it, so I'll either have to remove the antialiasing (which is why I said I'm working on them) or leave it as blue. I had just realised a second ago I had forgetten to upload 1c. You may have noticed, but it's fixed now. I had a good bit of trouble with 20c though, due to it's lack of proper circular...ness. Some still have tiny traces of the original antialiasing, (which you may or may not have noticed) but not enough to notice without zooming in (except maybe 20c) but to have completely removed some would have put them out of shape.
