Fansites

edit
  • Fansites are explicitly not allowed on Wikipedia. I happen to have the Sailormoon-associated pages on watch, but not the Xena pages. The people I've talked to say you could be banned for a period of time for repeatedly putting in those links, so watch it. Danny Lilithborne 23:18, 6 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Neptunekh. I'm not quite sure what you're asking. Are you wondering whether you should add links to fansites to articles? Generally, I'd say only do that if the fansite contains a good amount of useful information about the topic of the article, or is the topic of the article. The purpose of external links is to take the reader to places where they can find further information on the topic rather than to offer them a collection of weakly related sites that hang-on to the topic. Unlike the message above, I don't think you are likely to get banned or blocked for a period of time if you are adding the links in good-faith. The only way you would be liely to get blocked was if someone thought you were repeatedly adding fansite links in for advertising or spam purposes. (People do this quite often, as you can imagine!) If I can be of more precise help, let me know on my talk page. -Splashtalk 12:20, 7 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Look, if you want to add links to articles that I'm not watching over, fine; but at least do it in a neat way. I was reading Philip J. Userbox

edit
  • I went a little nuts on my userboxes, but I think it looks good. Anyhoo, for the Sailor Moon userbox, add {{subst:user smfan}} somewhere on your page. Also, try this link to find other userboxes you might want to use. As for links, the best thing to do for links is to list them like this:

*[http://url.of.page Name of page] - Brief description of page

Hope that helps. Danny Lilithborne 05:52, 19 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, responding to your question on my talk. Although I'm not sure an article is needed for a color variety of a mineral, there is a bit of info available as you linked on the Franklin-Sterling website. I usually tell my students to first read the sources and take notes in their own words, then write the paper from their notes. Lastly, check the draft to be certain there is no plagiarism and provide source info in a reference section. You did provide source info - which made it easy for me to check, thank you, now you need to rewrite in your words or paraphrase what the source said. If you use more than one source and especially if the article is long and or controversial, each section should be referenced (either with a footnote system or using Harvard style reference notes. Try to avoid direct quotes as much as possible, but if you use them be sure to set them off with quotation marks or indentations.

WikiMoon

edit
  • Can you tell me what happened? If so, I could try. --Masamage 16:09, 9 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well...I really want to help with this, but I don't even have an account at the place. That, and.... I think if I suddenly appeared to back you up, I would be pretty much ignored. It would look like you had just run off to get your friends to make yourself look good; how are they to know whether or not I know anything about the situation or about Wikis or Sailor Moon? I don't think that's your motivation, of course, but I feel unprepared to get involved in something I don't understand. I hope that makes sense.
But, how long are you banned for? And are their banning rules the same as WP's? --Masamage 07:21, 10 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I see. Well, I've looked over things and done what I can. I think you just mostly panicked a lot; calm down, don't get so offended so quickly, and just enjoy yourself. It'll be okay. ^^ It's very important to understand that when people revert your changes on a Wiki, it's nothing personal. They're just the same as you, trying to make it better. When people disagree with you, discuss the merits of the change, not the motives of the person removing it. You'll get much further and have way more fun that way. --Masamage 05:58, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Your ban is currently set to last forever. That seems pretty unreasonable, in my opinion, so I've asked WikiSysop to reconsider. No answer yet; probably still in bed. We'll see what he says. ^^ Again, I wouldn't take it too personally; I'm wondering if perhaps he set it up that way because you insisted you were leaving anyway, and even talked about banning yourself. He might just be complying with that. I'll let you know what I hear back. --Masamage 06:42, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I forgot about that. I feel horriable. Is he really angry? Am I banned forever?
The answers are no and yes, respectively. And I don't know why you're so upset about being banned, you were the one who said you were leaving. I would suggest that in the future you familiarize yourself with the rules of a wiki before you try editing it. And as Masamage suggested, don't take things personally. Kerochan no Miko 07:54, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Neptunekh, you asked a question. I answered it. I'm not sure why you're getting offended by this. Kerochan no Miko 08:25, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Kerochan really seems to me like a nice person, Neptune. I know that you've had disagreements, but don't let that stop you from seeing that she's not out to get you. She's replying to your talkpage because she wants to help. --Masamage 18:04, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Okay, it looks like the final decision is that they are going to leaved you banned, possibly indefinitely, you because of your "F you" comment to the Sysop. Sorry, but I can't do anything else. I have very little to do with Wikimoon and have been asked not to get involved with disputes that don't involve me. --Masamage 18:11, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I can't help you get un-banned from WikiMoon, because I agree that your behavior earned it, but yes, I was trying to help you understand why you were banned. However, you've been convinced from the start that I have something against you or hate you (neither of which is true) and I doubt you'll listen to me anyway, so I suppose I should give up. Kerochan no Miko 00:04, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry, but I wouldn't feel comfortable helping you start up a new pseudonym on Wikimoon. That would be dishonest, and it's really not my place to mediate. In my opinion, you should just let it go for now. Leave it alone for a little while, keep contributing here on Wikipedia, and get to the point where everyone feels better. In a month or two, consider trying again. But let it wait. Just enjoy your time here and help us out. --Masamage 04:12, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Glad you feel better. ^^ And it's true; you can totally look over there anytime you want. And when WikiMoon Web starts up, it sounds like a whole new project you won't be banned from, so there's your whole new clean slate right there! :) --Masamage 05:32, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
If you want Kerochan to know you're sorry, why not tell her yourself? I think that wold be a very significant gesture, and if you really mean it I'm confident that she would appreciate it. And then we'd all get warm fuzzies. ^^ --Masamage 05:32, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I am not very involved with WikiMoon, so I have no idea when WikiMoon Web will start up. It sounds like it'll be a different website, though, so there's a possibility your IP won't be blocked in that area, which is what I mean. On the other hand, it might; I don't know, and I have no way of knowing. You'll just have to be patient and keep an eye on it. --18:00, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
No, you haven't been a bother. ^^ I'm happy to help you with anything I have time for; I just want to encourage you not to totally rely on other people for the things you want to see done. That's not nearly as much fun or as satisfying.
I also don't want you to be totally let down when I don't have time to help with things. Like I said, I can get very busy, especially now that the school year's started again. --Masamage 06:08, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think the second Viluy link is okay, but we should only include one for each character. If you can find an even better Viluy shrine, I'd prefer something a little nicer (with not so many ads), but feel free to add that in for now. We can replace it when we find something else. Even better than that would be to have a really excellent shrine that had info for all five/six of the Witches; then we'd only need one external link. Still, we'll go with what we've got for now. ^^ Thanks! --Masamage 04:12, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, in my opinion all those pages look pretty messy. Having something at a Geocities or Angelfire address is always a bad sign, because anyone who visits them will be bombarded with adverts and popups, and we don't want to do that with our readers. The effort is appreciated, though! Try to look for something really, really top quality, not just any old page. I'd be happy to take a look if you find something else, but don't worry about it too much. If you think about it, our goal is to provide information, with providing extra links as kind of an afterthought.
I also don't know anything about Charmed, so I won't be able to help you there. The right place to ask about those links would be at Talk:Prudence Halliwell. Or just use your best judgement--are they really high-quality? Do they say things the article doesn't already say? Do they say things that the article's current links don't already say? If you can answer yes to all of these questions, you can feel confident in adding them. Or in just adding one, if it's better than the other. --Masamage 05:32, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Why don't you want to talk to Kerochan yourself? And why don't you want to add links yourself? --Masamage 07:44, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Add them! :) If they're good, they'll stay, and I told you just a few lines above this how to tell whether they should be there. When in doubt, use the talk page for that specific article.
Like I said, the Wikimoon people have reminded me that these events are none of my business, and I've agreed not to keep involving myself. I'm sorry, but I've really got to hold to that. However, I will reiterate another thing I said a few lines up, which is that when "WikiMoon Web" starts up, you'll have a clean slate there and will be able to start over with those people, talking to them yourself and making good contributions just as you intend.
I'm very happy to help you with things where I can, but please be aware that I am a married college student working two jobs. I really don't have the time to personally approve every change you want to make to the Wiki. But WP policy specifically says to be bold--go ahead and make changes! As long as you mean well--which you do--you won't get in trouble. Just listen to the feedback you get and abide by it. If people disagree with what you post, they will probably revert it, and then the right thing to do is to discuss the merits of the thing you changed. It is not a personal attack when people do this. It's the natural consequence of having more than one person working here. Don't question their motives; just have a fun conversation about improving the encyclopedia.
I'm not going to add that Viluy link mostly on principle. It's your idea; you should do it and you should get credit for it. That, and I don't want to become a middle-man. Go ahead and post it yourself. Nothing bad will happen. :) --Masamage 08:43, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Kirra, Greece

edit

Hi, you asked me to take a look at this article you created. I moved it to Kirra, Phocis, and added an intro and categories. I'm not going to edit it any further, but I do have some suggestions. The text looks like it was copied from some tourist brochure. That might be a copyright violation, you'd better rewrite the interesting parts (about the ancient port, earthquake etc.) into a more neutral style, and remove the less interesting/encyclopedic parts like the camp sites. Take a look at Wikipedia:How to edit a page, that should give you an idea how to make this a nice article. For instance, you can link to other articles like this: [[Delphi]] and this: [[Crete|Cretan]]. Enjoy your editing! Markussep 18:52, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

(Answer to question my talk page): The Lunar Archivist's work is usually quite good. So yes I thinks so, however some things in the Sailor Moon world may be named after things, but aren't supposed to be the same thing - the Tau Galaxy in Sailor Moon is a Galaxy for example, not a star system like Tau Ceti. --GracieLizzie 15:46, 10 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I've taken a look at the Amfipoli article and think the information you have added is great! If you've some spare time, perhaps you could add a little more information, but you needn't worry if not. Let me know if you need any help in the future --Matthuxtable 13:21, 31 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I don't think the Amfipoli article needs so much detail on the history of Amphipolis. After all, the two cities may share the same site but they are still technically different cities. A brief summary of the ancient city's history is all that is needed, and what you've already added is enough. It might be better if you included some info on the modern city's history. Keep up the good work. Galanskov 11:12, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Its a good start but, it still needs some work on the syntax and in expanding it. For example, if you say "the four Christian churches from the late Antiquity are worth mentioning", mention them. Create a new section where you describe the individual churches and maybe even start new articles on them (if there is enough content).
Also, as Galanskov mentions above, if you're focusing on the modern city it would perhaps be a good idea to start the relevant sections for a modern city. You can get ideas from the cities listed here.
One more thing, in the future you may want to consider posting a request here or in the relevant section of the WikiProject the article is in scope of.
Keep up the good work! --Kimontalk 18:16, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I notice that you have been adding a number of external links. Some of the sites do not cite any reliable sources for their content, and in some cases have only a few sentences that is duplicative of material that is already in the article. These sites do not seem to meet the tests for WP:EL. External sites need to add something beyond what is available in the article, or could be added to the article, and must themselves cite reliable sources. If you feel that the sites do have value, could you please suggest them on the talk pages for the articles to test if others agree? Here is some general information regarding Wikipedia link policies that you may want to review.

Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, the external links you added do not comply with our guidelines for external links. Wikipedia is not a mere directory of links; nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, then please discuss it on the article's talk page before reinserting it. Hi Nepyunekh

edit

I read your message and browsed your change. Unfortunately, it looks like an exact copy-paste from the (non-reliable) source you added in your following edit. Irrespectively of the fact that the source is un-reliable, the fact hat you copied the exact content, also violates WP:COPYRIGHT policy. I also couldn't help noticing similar unanswered complaints above, so I strongly urge you to read the linked policies. Please take my comment as a good faith suggestion. If I may further suggest some creative activity for the article in question, I see that it is requested that Amfipoli be merged to Amphipolis. This task is relatively easy, and if you decide to carry it out, I'll be on your side. Regards, NikoSilver 22:36, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Prefecture of Fokida

edit

Hi. It seems that an article on the topic already exists at Phocis. I could suggest that you either selective merge the content from Prefecture of Fokida into Phocis or use the sources to expand the latter article. I'd only recommend a stricter adherence to the policy on neutrality, which would involve avoiding value judgments (e.g., "Fokida is a wonderful place"). If I can help in any way (for instance, with the merge), please let me know. Cheers, Black Falcon (Talk) 01:24, 3 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Given that much of the information between the duplicate articles was (naturally) redundant, I added to Phocis using the sources present in Prefecture of Fokida and have now redirected the latter to the former. I haven't merged everything as not everything could be placed into the Phocis article. If there's anything that you feel I overlooked and that should be merged, go ahead and merge it (just copy-paste the content and note the merge in an edit summary). Re: Phantom crystal

Hi! I have wikified the article and made a few routine cleanup/maintenance additions (category, stub tag). The subject seems to be notable (e.g. [3][4]) and the main issue that I could identify is the lack of references. I really can't comment much more beyond that, since the subject falls outside my field of specialisation. You could probably receive more informative comments from a mineralogist or a member of WikiProject Chemistry. I hope I've been able to help a little. Cheers, and happy editing, Black Falcon (Talk) 03:43, 19 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I also added a reference for one sentence and changed the maintenance tag from {{unreferenced}} to {{refimprove}}. Black Falcon (Talk) 03:48, 19 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Anthemoessa

edit

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Anthemoessa, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.messagenet.com/myths/ppt/Sirens_1.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot 23:11, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I received your message on my Talk page and had a look at the article. I'm afraid it needed a full rewrite as there were several spelling errors along with other flaws (at least in terms of basic Wikipedia style guidelines). I have since seen the discussion at Wetman's page and I have to agree with him. The content is not substantial enough at this stage to warrant its own article. I have left it there as a pretty flimsy stub at this stage but it should probably be merged into either Sirenum scopuli (an article about the rocky island home of the Sirens in a more general context) or within the Sirens article itself. As a general point, you'd probably need to find good text references e.g in Homer or one of the other numerous Greek mythology authorities and link them - I'm afraid the MessageNet.com site is not really a suitable reference. I hope this doesn't discourage you from continuing to edit so long as you continue to pick up feedback from editors along the way. Thanks Dick G (talk) 10:25, 22 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Merge and redirect completed. As an aside, you could always Be Bold and make these changes yourself. I see you messaged quite a number of editors about this article, and maybe I shouldn't have responded so soon. Spend some time reading the Wiki policies and the heaps of useful information out there and you'll soon pick up how this place works. Have a go yourself next time maybe. Cheers Dick G (talk) 12:44, 22 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I wasn't here when you left me the message; do you still need help now that it's been merged? I'm normally around, so if you do need help (with that article, or any others), feel free to ask. · AndonicO Talk 01:14, 26 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your message. I just cut and paste the text into the destination article and then changed the original article to a redirect page. Have a look at this Help with merging pages for more info Dick G (talk) 21:15, 22 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Harmatchis"

edit

I've just been doing a patrol of the new pages and came across this creation of yours. I'm not sure what to make of it so thought I'd better drop you a line or two. Firstly, why does this title have quotation marks after it? Secondly, if the name is refering to the Egyptian god Horus. Why not just redirect the page to Horus? Thirdly the article uses the word "seems" and I find this a most unencyclopedic word. I really think that bit needs cleaning up. I'm going to put some maintenance tags on the article but I think it needs redirecting, moving or renaming or something? Sting_au Talk 11:19, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Just got your invitation to copyedit your article. Thing is, the spelling "Harmachis" already redirects to the Horus article, which makes sense since he is generally considered to be a manifestation of that god. Given the stray quote mark that appears in the title of your article, I doubt anyone would ever use it as a redirect page to get to the Horus article, and I would suggest it be deleted, and you could move your material over to somewhere on the Horus page. By the way, a better/more comprehensive reference to use that the ones that you cite on this subject is: [5]. If/when you add material to the Horus article, myself and others will likely jump in and edit it. Cheers! Captmondo (talk) 11:34, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I also recommend adding the info to the Horus page, and redirecting Harmachis to it. Nice to see you're getting busy with the articles, most new people don't bother. · AndonicO Talk 12:23, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

G'day Neptunekh, I got your message but someone has already done a redirect to Horus. I think that's the best solution actually. Be careful of typos when creating new pages. Research your topic carefully. Choose your references wisely as there is a lot of misinformation on the web. Oh, and try to make sure there is not already an article on Wikipedea on the topic. Your information could go into the Horus article but it needs to be worded and referenced very carefully as that article is of a high standard. Anything you add there will be reverted in an instant if not up to scratch. Cheers, Sting_au Talk 21:12, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I checked the Horus article to see what information from the one you wrote was left out, but I think it's all there. · AndonicO Talk 13:53, 7 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Marissa Cooper

edit

Her sexual orientation was never confirmed, sort of like the character Maggie Stone (with the exception that the media often now refers to Maggie as a lesbian). That's why I've kept Marissa out of Category:Fictional bisexuals. Did you read her Sexual orientation section? It pretty much makes it clear on how fans were/are unsure of her sexual orientation, even the media. Another confusing character's sexual orientation is Ashley Davies, but a stronger argument might be able to be made for categorizing her as bisexual...since some valid sources say that she is. Do you have a valid source stating that Marissa is? If so, I'm still unsure if we should categorize her as such. I mean, like Ashley, there are conflicting reports. But I really haven't seen any reports that conflict with Marissa just experimenting with her sexuality. Flyer22 (talk) 07:51, 7 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: Ioffer

edit

Hi! I noticed that the article was deleted for failing to assert the subject's importance or significance. However, there seems to be adequate coverage of the website (see here) to justify creating an article. These sources ([6][7][8]) especially seem to contain enough information with which to write an article. Let me know if I can offer any help. –Black Falcon (Talk) 00:59, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, per your request, I've recreated the article at iOffer. (Initially, I was going to contact the deleting administrator to discuss undeletion of the article, but I concluded that recreating the article would be quicker.) If there's any information that I've missed, please add it to the article or let me know and I'll try to incorporate it. Cheers, –Black Falcon (Talk) 00:22, 5 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Buttertubs Marsh

edit

Hi. I've added a few links and categories. If you want to improve the article, you probably need to include more about the site itself - at the moment, it's just a list of the birds found there. What you need is some history - when it was founded, by whom, when, why etc., and also some facts about it - how large is it (in acres/square miles etc)., is it a protected site, how many visitors, any notable events that occurred there etc. If you can include a map showing it's geographical location, that would be nice. Hope this helps. Any problems, you know how to reach me :-) CultureDrone (talk) 06:59, 5 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've added some more information - hope you approve :-) It could still do with some more work though. CultureDrone (talk) 07:51, 5 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

edit

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

I'd be dubious about using IMDB as a source for anything - although submissions are viewed by their admins, I don't know how rigorous their checking is, and it might not be verifiable (as far as Wikipedia would understand it). Speedy deletion nomination of Martyn Godfrey

edit

A tag has been placed on Martyn Godfrey requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
