Hi Michel, found something beautiful in the Library of Congress today: a fundraising poster for World War I humanitarian relief in Belgium. Seems fitting to offer it to you.[1] Due to quirks in copyright law and site policies it qualifies for local en:wiki upload under the PD-1923 tag, but cannot be uploaded to Commons. Interested? Thanks. One more thing, and perhaps it's just me. Would you mind looking at the crop again? I think the background is too tall, especially when the image is deployed in the infobox. Image restoration

edit

Hi Michel! I was notified that you might be the person to talk to about high-quality image restoration. I do not want to impose or anything, but if you have time, please take a look at this picture and see if you want to restore it. It would be great to improve the article Jaffa–Jerusalem railway, which I'm slowly working to bring up to GA status, and could fit in other article, such as Jerusalem and Jerusalem Railway Station (which I intend to write in the future). Thanks, Ynhockey (Talk) 20:36, 14 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

No thanks. It may have a shot at FP, but I can also imagine comments along the lines of "you can barely see the building itself". Which could then be answered in the vein of "yes, but a railway is more than just the building, this illustrates the rails that came from Belgium and the locomotives that came from X, etc.". I'll have a go, we'll see. :) -- Michel Vuijlsteke (talk) 19:27, 18 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

NICE interface modification: We need more users!

Hello. I am one of the developers of the NICE tool and the related study's contact person. I hope you have been finding the modification helpful so far. Full version of NICE to be released

edit

Thanks for helping me and my colleagues test the NICE interface modification. Depending on when you installed the tool, you were only presented with a specific subset of the features we have developed. We are ready to roll out the full feature set which, we expect, will make the gadget significantly more useful. Before we do that, we'd like you to answer a few questions about your activity in Wikipedia as it relates to undoing other's edits and what you thought of the NICE features you were shown.

The survey will ask for your Wikipedia username, but you can participate anonymously if you choose. To do so, send me an email with an address I can respond to and I will have the survey software respond with an anonymous token for you to continue. --EpochFail (talk|contribs) 16:57, 24 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello Mvuijlst! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 2 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 4 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

Fair use rationale for File:Genbox family history.png

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Genbox family history.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 13:03, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:I Love Katamari.png

edit

Thanks for uploading File:I Love Katamari.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. File:Captured English gun.png listed for deletion

A file that you uploaded or altered, File:Captured English gun.png, has been listed at Wikipedia:Files for deletion. Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. Kelly hi! 21:57, 2 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

There are three versions of that image: a low resolution courtesy copy, a high resolution (lossy) jpg copy, and this file, which is the original high resolution (lossless) version. MediaWiki apparently can't create thumbnaild for png files as big as this, and that's the only reason this image is orphaned. But hey, I'm not stopping anyone. -- Michel Vuijlsteke (talk) 14:08, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please note that Wikipedia does have a policy that says that people notable for only one event are not notable forever.—Ryulong (竜龙) 20:12, 25 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

We'll just have to agree to disagree. I think my WP:NTEMP beats your WP:1E. -- Michel Vuijlsteke (talk) 21:00, 25 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
More specifically, I think Wikipedia should do its best to keep the kind of content in that WP:1E tries to keep away. Wikipedia could really shine if it covered all sorts of ephemera, stuff no-one would remember if it weren't for Wikipedia. -- Michel Vuijlsteke (talk) 21:03, 25 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
NTEMP states

While notability itself is not temporary, from time to time re-assessment of the evidence of notability or suitability of existing articles may be requested by any user via a deletion discussion, or new evidence may arise for articles previously deemed unsuitable. Thus, articles may be proposed for deletion or recreated months or even years after being earlier considered.

In particular, if reliable sources cover the person only in the context of a single event, and if that person otherwise remains, or is likely to remain, a low-profile individual, we should generally avoid having a biographical article on that individual.

This seems to be a valid definition of what I am currently doing in regards to Shavershian. And your current beliefs are not held by the majority of the project. On this website, we have had to make WP:1E and WP:BLP1E to prevent articles on people who briefly appear in the media, but then fade away into obscurity. If no one is going to remember it unless we retain information on it, then it perhaps it never really made any actual impact on society or history such that we should cover it.—Ryulong (竜龙) 21:18, 25 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
I hear what you're saying, and there was no real need to copy-paste WP:NTEMP here. I still think the article should be kept (WP:1E doesn't apply here anyway), and furthermore even if it did, I think WP:1E itself should be removed. Last time I checked, I was entitled to my own opinion. I don't really understand why you're getting into this discussion. -- Michel Vuijlsteke (talk) 21:34, 25 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Midnight Sun (graphic novel)

edit

The article Midnight Sun (graphic novel) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails the GNG and WP:BOOK; reviews are almost exclusively from bloggers and public posts. No substantive improvement in over a year, tagged as an orphan for months. ZERO G-News hits.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Orphaned non-free media (File:Wolven 1-3 covers.jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Wolven 1-3 covers.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:26, 18 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Step 1: PROD article, don't leave message on talk page of article creator. Step 2: Delete said article. Step 3: remove any orphaned media left over. Hooray for deletionism! -- Michel Vuijlsteke (talk) 08:33, 18 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Huis van Alijn, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Gent (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Web Search Engine

edit

Hi Mvuijlst, how do you do? Hope everything is well. I saw you edited the article 'Web search engine', and I tried editing it too. However, because of this new visual tag editor, it is not working and the format of the table is now weird. If it's ok, could you tell me how you edited it with this new editor? Or can you still use the regular editor? Thanks! Cheers, Zalunardo8 (talk) 13:59, 11 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I edited the article using the old editor, i.e. using "edit source" and not "edit". The new editor may break tables. Possibly. -- Michel Vuijlsteke (talk) 14:02, 11 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, that's what I realized.. :( I'll reverted it and edit it using the 'edit source' link. Thank you very much! Zalunardo8 (talk) 14:06, 11 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Earl Fred Bennett moved to draftspace

edit

An article you recently created, Earl Fred Bennett, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three, to be safe. And please remember that interviews, as primary sources, do not count towards GNG.(?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.Onel5969 TT me 15:58, 25 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Tom Barman, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Trainspotting.
