Maybe tied to Kamāmalu?
editJust FYI. I haven't really decided how far I'm digging into this. Background, the famous, and very old, Willows Restaurant on Oahu has always claimed to be on property once owned by Kamāmalu. History of the Willows. In its hey-day, a very famous place for local celebrities in Hawaii to be seen. So, I've been gradually scanning through the pages of Men and Women of Hawaii, and ran across the image of Emma Kaleionamoku Hausten who very much looks like she could be Hawaiian. pp293-294 Possible article by me (or not...depending on sources). She's the woman who first opened the Willows restaurant in the mid-late 1930s. She was born on Maui in 1878 to Chang Ai and Kahalekenekaoli Kaluahine. According to the restaurant "about" info, she somehow came into possession of the land/house now known as the Willows. Don't know if this is a link to anything you're working on, but thought I'd drop it here in case it means anything to you. — Maile (talk) 16:11, 16 March 2017 (UTC)
- Never heard of her. Why the particular interest?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 20:23, 16 March 2017 (UTC)
- Actually thanks for the link to Men and Women of Hawaii. I did not know it was online. I was using to cite about the Dowager Princess Kawānanakoa, who was a ward of Nani Alapai...There is even an image of her too bad it is not PD.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 20:26, 16 March 2017 (UTC)
- No particular interest in any individual, except for what I previously gleened about Bina Mossman. I was perusing the book to see who else might be of interest. There are several years of that book via Hathi. In some ways, these books are more of a social register than any real accomplishments. Many non-notable occupations below management levels, so they must have had social ties to get into the book. — Maile (talk) 20:55, 16 March 2017 (UTC)
Sources and whatnot
editI'm in a long-term process of re-organizing how I access my saved basic sources, and checking/discarding if anything is dead or moved. Do you know about the Cornell University Making of America search page? I don't know if Cornell took it over from Univ of Michigan Making of America, but Cornell seems to have a better search page, IMO. I did a basic search on Liliuokalani and came up with some irrelevant results, but also these: The Hawaiian Situation I: The Invasion of Hawaii, The Hawaiian Situation II: A Plea for Annexation. — Maile (talk) 22:17, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
- Interesting. Never heard of this search engine or the source (although it does seem Chamberlain was part of that anti-annexationist voice in the US along with Cleveland and others). --KAVEBEAR (talk) 06:42, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

Best wishes. Thincat (talk) 10:29, 31 March 2017 (UTC)

DYK for Kong Tai Heong
editYou might want to change the hook a little. That claim was in 1946, and may not be accurate today. Also, that was according to Ripley's Believe It or Not! newspaper column as the sole source. I don't know where Wikipedia stands on Ripley as a reliable source. The source you have linked, Hawaii magazine, says she is remembered for delivering that many babies, but it does not say it was the highest number for anybody. — Maile (talk) 16:22, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Mrs. John W. Dorsett
editHi KAVEBEAR! :) I am putting references relating to Mrs. Dorsett here.
So far this is what I've found. I'll keep digging! We might want to tag in SusunW to look at primary sources. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 18:39, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
- Megalibrarygirl I can't read your Google books link, but the same book is here [4] What are we looking for here? Info on her or info on Hawaii suffrage? SusunW (talk) 19:20, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
- I find no Dorsetts in Hawaii. I DO however find a Mrs. J. M. Dowsett who was involved in Suffrage. [5] tracking that, I find John M.'s wife was Wilhelmina [6] which led to this Wilhelmina Kekelaokalaninui Dowsett [1861-1929] [7] Her father was Hermann A. Widemann [8] and her mother was Mary Kaumana Kealaimoku [9], [10] Is that helpful? Do I need to dig further? SusunW (talk) 19:54, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
- Megalibrarygirl Okay, I circled back to this. I am fairly certain the the references calling this woman Dorsett are mistaken. I have checked variant spellings on Dorset, Dorsett, Dorsette, Darset, Dorcet, etc. and find no one with any such name who was not a British or Canadian tourist in the islands this early (1910-1920). On the other hand, the Dowsetts were quite prominent and her family was Hawaiian royalty. M vs. W is not a big issue either as handwriting is often confused. (I once found historical records for James Parrack indexed under Jame Sperrick, thus, a rule of thumb is to always search for variant spellings. In periods where illiteracy was high, people wrote things as they thought they heard them.) If you determine that Dowsett is who you need, marriage and birth information is here. [11] I found her obit, but it is a extra subscription clip from Newspapers.com. There are all sorts of clippings that are available about her, but I wasn't sure if you need them or have access to them. SusunW (talk) 22:25, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Megalibrarygirl and SusunW: Drilling down a little on this, with what KAVEBEAR originally posted on my talk page here. This mentions more than one Dorsett. pp. 716 717, 883 refer to Mrs. John W. Dorsett as being associated with "work in Hawaii" and "the highest social circles in the islands", and "...the women of Honolulu in 1912, when they called on Mrs. John W. Dorsett to help them organize a suffrage club ". The other Dorsett. pp. 323 is actually Martha Angle Dorsett of Minneapolis in 1919, and probably not related to this. Men of Hawaii 1917 does not have the name Dorsett. But it does have David Aikanaka Dowsett, a real estate broker, on p. 93. He married Hazel Barbara Bailey of San Jose, California. — Maile (talk) 23:46, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
- @SusunW and Maile66:, thanks for helping on this. I've also contacted the Historical Society of Hawaii for help. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 00:00, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
- David Aikanaka Dowsett at Find a Grave says his wife Adeline died in 1916, so I don't know if this was her. — Maile (talk) 00:03, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
- @SusunW and Maile66:, thanks for helping on this. I've also contacted the Historical Society of Hawaii for help. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 00:00, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

- @SusunW, Maile66, and Megalibrarygirl: Thank you all so much. I think User:SusunW is right. Dowsett seems like the correct spelling. Base on her family's position and all the little clues in the History of Woman Suffrage source about high born Hawaiian ladies being involved. I am planning to create an article for her and the other well known suffragettes. User:SusunW I may need her obituary in the near future if you can provide that for me because I don't have extra subscription on Newspapers.com. Thanks.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 00:49, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Megalibrarygirl: Let me know if the Hawaiian Historical Society has anything additional to say about the subject. It may help dig this period of history out of the obscurity. Thanks.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 00:53, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry Kavebear, I don't have an extra subscription. Not sure how it works or even whether I could obtain one (Its complicated. I live in one country and bank in another one). Somewhere on here is a page where you can ask for others who have a subscription if they can help with the info, but I don't know where that page is. The paper which has the notice is Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Honolulu, Hawaii, Thursday, December 12, 1929, p 29 and the part I can read says Wilhelmina Dowsett died Tuesday, which would make it December 10, 1929 SusunW (talk) 15:00, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
- @SusunW, Maile66, and Megalibrarygirl: Here is the article: Wilhelmina Kekelaokalaninui Widemann Dowsett if you guys want to add or improve upon it.
- Congrats Kavebear! The article looks great and I love the picture. Glad to have been able to help. Sorry it has taken me so long to respond, but I've had no internet for 3 days. Apparently it was a citywide problem. Developing world issues .... SusunW (talk) 16:16, 7 May 2017 (UTC)

Gynberg Ballads
editI am closing your 13 May resource request for Gynberg Ballads as stale because in three months no one has been able to fulfill it.
The holders of four of the five extant copies explicitly prohibit your request. Official reasons range from restrictions under which the item was gifted to the physical condition of the item. Also, most special collections departments are forced to act as profit centers. If they release an image that anyone can access for free, then they can no longer charge individual researchers for access.
The sole exception is University of Michigan. I've requested that they digitize their copy. Whether they actually do so is at the discretion of the relevant special collections curator. If they do, it will be according to their own specifications and timeline (usually 2-3 months). I don't have high hopes, but I'll let you know if they come through. --Worldbruce (talk) 23:38, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi. Thankyou for your participation in the challenge series or/and contests. In November The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If this would appeal to you and you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on women during this month for your region or wherever please sign up in the participants section. The articles done may also count towards the ongoing challenge. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Help would also be appreciated in drawing up the lists of missing articles. If you think of any missing articles please add them to the sub lists by continent at Missing articles. Thankyou, and if taking part, good luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:04, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

Nani Alapai
editHello Kavebear:
The copy edit that you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article Nani Alapai has been completed.
The only significant change I made is with this sentence: "She accompanied the band on many of their 1905 visits to the continental United States." Since it seems unlikely that that band made "many" visits to the US I changed the sentence to read "... appearances in the continental United States." If this is incorrect you'll need to revert that edit.

Good Article Backlog
editHi KAVEBEAR. I am looking to encourage suitable editors to review more articles at WP:GAN. Currently you have 21 nominations awaiting review and as you are probably aware there is a large backlog. This means you and other editors may have to wait months before your articles are reviewed. I can not find any records of reviews you may have done at User:GA bot/Stats, but looking at your user page I see you have helped promote 26 articles to Good Status. This suggests that you are familiar with the criteria and should be able to contribute to reviews. Without editors reviewing articles the process falls apart. If you need some help with reviewingfeel free to ask me or leave a note at the help desk. Regards AIRcorn (talk) 11:20, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
Bishop Museum sources
editYou might already know about this. While searching through the HathiTrust, I found Memoirs of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum of Polynesian Ethnology and Natural History (multiple volumes 1899-several decades). Depending on what you're interested in, I was just browsing and found Vol VI is the Abraham Fornander collection of Hawaiian antiquities and folklore. There folklore in both Hawaiian language and the English translation. There's a 2-page contents section that lists the folklore. haven't had a chance to browse the other volumes. — Maile (talk) 14:30, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
- I've think I've seen those before at one point. I remember with writing biographies on ancient Hawaiian alii early in my Wikipedia editing days since the line between folklore and history is vague. Generally my interest time frame is from the conquest to the early 1900s. Btw do you know how I can upgrade my newspaper.com subscription through the Wikipedia library to the plus version. I'm still only subscribed to the regular. I submit a request to change it on November 16 but haven't heard anything back from them...Wait. Actually all my subscriptions expired. Do you know why ProjectMuse and Questia don't allow the renewal option? I had to reapply to those.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 15:09, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
- The "publishers extra" is not an upgrade, but the normal Wikipedia subscription. I had trouble with my renewals on everything once they made the changeover. I finally addressed my issues by emailing Samwalton9_(WMF), and he resolved everything for me. If you email him, he will respond directly to your email. — Maile (talk) 16:10, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
- Regarding Questia, I just realized that my subscription expires in a week. I asked on The Wikipedia Library on Wikimedia how to renew that. The answer is here: answered here. If you want to keep your same email address on Questia, email them directly. Instructions are in the link I provided here. — Maile (talk) 01:46, 26 November 2017 (UTC)

Ephraim Weston Clark
editIf you wander back this way, Ephraim Weston Clark. Trying to find enough pieces to get a basic article on this Kawaihao Church minister. Frustrating. He seems to have arrived in Hawaii before English language newspapers were interested in him personally. The best coverage on him at "Autobiographical Notes of Ephraim W. Clark". The Friend. 91: 82–83, 85. April 1922. was something he wrote himself. Fascinating stuff, but I can't use it because it's technically OR. This particular reverend may have to be abandoned for a while. — Maile (talk) 21:40, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

Try searching Ephraim Clark. A lot more sources mention him as that. [12]. Searchers from Hawaiian Historical Society [13]...Manoa scholarspace[14]...--KAVEBEAR (talk) 22:58, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
He was prolific writer. Many of his personal letters are cited in Kuykendall's books.
- He also died in Chicago so I would see if any publication in that city or his home state of New Hampshire has an obituary. Here [17] is his obit in the Advertiser.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 23:09, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

Oldest living Hawaiian woman
editJust an FYI. I think you're the one who left the redlink at WIP missing Oceana articles, about Mary Maihiai, (1883-1912/13) alleged Hawaiian centenarian. I thought of that just now when I was searching through available sources for William Kamau, the Kahu who came after Akaiko Akana at Kawaiahaʻo. The information in the newspaper came from William Kamau. This woman's name is Kaahaina Naihe. It says she might have even been 118 years old. Sammy Amalu
editIn trying to find sources on when Rev. Edward Kahale (Kawaiahao) died, I ran across a newspaper item about his officiating at Sammy Amalu's 4th marriage. Then I found you'd done the article on his ancestor Miriam Auhea Kekāuluohi Crowningburg. If you're collecting sourcing on Amalu, here's one:
- "columist Amalu weds Ann Felzer". The Honolulu Advertiser – via Newspapers.com (subscription required) . February 12, 1973. p. 16. Retrieved April 9, 2018.
Oh... well here's the tie-in to the two love birds. Kind of surprised Rev. Kahale got involved in marrying them. However, I find nothing on Kahale after that 1973 wedding, not even his death date.
- "Sheraton Says Isle Hotel Deal Is Off; Coast Attorney Told Amalu Is Key". Honolulu Star-Bulletin – via Newspapers.com (subscription required) . May 16, 1962. p. 1. Retrieved April 9, 2018.
Amalu was an interesting character, a small-time version of Celso Caesar Moreno. — Maile (talk) 14:03, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

Missing stone at Kailua-Kona?
editFound while researching A Akaka, when he was pastor at a church in Hilo. One of his dedication ceremonies at the new Kona Palms, a small 38-room hotel. In the image, he's touching, " ... the old stone of King Kamehameha I and Queen Kaahamanu residence still at the site". Also mentions Liholiho spent a lot of time at that house. Kamakahonu or maybe Hulihe'e Palace? What happened to that stone?
- Buchwach, Buck (September 7, 1955). "Kona Palms Dedicated In Colorful Ceremony". The Honolulu Advertiser – via Newspapers.com (subscription required) . p. 13. Retrieved April 17, 2018.
The hotel was sold to Lorrin P. Thurston of the Advertiser in 1964
- "Kona Palms Hotel Bought By Thurston". The Honolulu Star-Bulletin – via Newspapers.com (subscription required) . June 11, 1964. p. 2. Retrieved April 17, 2018.
A web search says it was "probably was next to the Mokuaikaua Church". It might have been sold by Thurston and fallen to the 1960s-1970s resort construction boom. Or it might have survived, could now be Uncle Billy's Kona Bay Hotel, 75-5739 Alii Dr, Kailua-Kona. As a matter of curiosity, I'm more interested in that stone and what happened to it. — Maile (talk) 12:58, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
- It is most likely not Hulihee which was the house of Governor Kuakini and wasn't built in Kamehameha I's lifetime. A good source to look into may be "Palaces and Forts of the Hawaiian Kingdom: From Thatch to American Florentine". There were many palaces and royal/chiefly residences that have been forgotten.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 14:23, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
Lucy Kaopaulu Peabody
editHello:
The copy edit that you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article Lucy Kaopaulu Peabody has been completed.
I believe I fixed this sentence—The younger Lift lived in Kona, before going to Honolulu to be raised by her aunt and learn English.
—correctly. I changed "Lift" to "Lucy". I just wanted to be certain this is correct.
Also, you have not mentioned it specifically, but I am assuming Peabody never married or had children? This might be worth mentioning-perhaps in the second sentence of the final paragraph mentioning he date of death.
Best of luck with the GA process.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Regards,
Thanks for all your hard work on Nathaniel Bright Emerson

Tip of the day
editUse or not, as you would. I use tabs on my Wikipedia pages, so this is the only way I know to tell you this. Sometimes on reviews, FAC for instance, somebody will make a comment about using an en dash instead of an em dash, etc. I downloaded a script to my commons.js years ago (more info can be found at User talk:GregU/dashes.js)
importScript("User:GregU/dashes.js");
So, it added a tab to the top of all my pages that looks like a little dash. If I click on it, the script automatically checks and corrects any inconsistencies of dashes in the article. Enjoy, should you care to use. — Maile (talk) 19:46, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
GA Reviews?
editHi! I was wondering if you'd ever given any thought to conducting some GA reviews. As someone who has several articles that have gone through the process it seems like you would understand it well and history (which appears to be your area of interest) is one that has a much longer than normal wait time (the median wait time is 126 days vs 74 overall). It would also potentially reduce the queue to allow some of your 20 nominations to draw attention and be reviewed. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 23:04, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Sci-Hub
editIf no one fulfills your RX request on Pa'u riding, you might use Sci-Hub. An RX editor recommended it to me. It bypasses paywalls so it's semi-legal; I find it useful occasionally for Wikipedia research/citations when I'm in a hurry or no one has fulfilled my RX request. Just input the DOI number and it should bring up the document. Sometimes you have to check around to see which Sci-Hub domain is actually working -- they get shut down and such. Acting Finance Minister of Hawaii
editYou might want to have a look at pg 95, 2nd entry on page for C.T. Gulick: https://play.google.com/books/reader?id=WU4XAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&output=reader&hl=en&pg=GBS.PA95 Peaceray (talk) 03:52, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks. I have since corrected that. The problem is that Gulick's term as acting finance minister seem to be due to a brief absence of Kapnea from the islands in 1885. We still need a source stating when this acting term ended because Kapena was still finance minister until June of 1886.KAVEBEAR (talk) 05:28, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- The same page shows J. M. Kapena starting on February 13, 1883, C. T. Gulick starting as acting on September 1, 1885, & P. P. Kanoa starting on June 30, 1886. Didn't check, but there may be more sources at footnotes after "He served as finance minister until June 30, 1886, although Minister of the Interiors Charles T. Gulick served as acting finance minister while he was attending the Louisville Exposition in 1885 as Special Commissioner." at John Mākini Kapena#Political career. I do have one question. According to the article, Moses was expelled from the school, and this is evidence that Lot is the father. I'm not sure I see the connection. I would think that if Moses had been the father, it would lead to his expulsion. Could Lot have been the one to be expelled? Tdslk (talk) 22:24, 28 August 2018 (UTC)
- This is what the source states. Lot did not get in trouble for the affair. Moses was expelled for visiting Queen Kalama in the night, another incident on its own. These two students Moses and Abigail seem to have only left when there were no feasible way to cover it up.KAVEBEAR (talk) 22:53, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

Leleiohoku II
editHello:
The copy edit you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article Leleiohoku II has been completed. Unfortunately the GA reviewer missed several grammatical errors and my c/e was too late for the article's DYK appearance.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Twofingered Typist (talk) 14:00, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
- I notice you changed family "was" to family "were". Family is a singular collective noun so "was" is correct. "Were" is sometime used in British English. https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/grammar/matching-verbs-to-collective-nouns Since this article is not written in British English, you might want to consider restoring my correction to "was". Regards, Twofingered Typist (talk) 12:17, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
- We had the same disagreement in the article on Liliuokalani. Family should be used as plural here since using was will change the next part of the sentence, which you left out, “were collateral relations”. From what I’ve seen online, it seems using the collective family as a plural or singular noun depends on how natural it sounds. Changing it to “was collateral relations“ is bad. Kalākaua
editHello:
The copy edit you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article Kalākaua has been completed.
I went through the Early life and family and Political and military careers sections and don't see any obvious issues. What are your concerns?
I have marked one sentence in the Political and military careers section that I think needs clarification. Otherwise I think the article is in good shape.
Regards,
Twofingered Typist (talk) 22:10, 28 August 2018 (UTC)
- @KAVEBEAR: I tweaked some of your wording just so it flows better. I see you've changed the text to "Prussian military system". Perhaps it's just me, but this wording still seems vague. Did he admire their training program? ... or something else. You didn't answer my question about your concerns. Are there any I can address? Twofingered Typist (talk) 12:48, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
- No concerns, I just added stuff after you started editing. He admired Prussian military style (19th century Prussia was known for its effective military) and tried to create an active military in Hawaii in his reign. We have pictures of the king with a Pickelhaube. Later authors (Zambucka) have claimed that this interest stem from his lessons under Funk. KAVEBEAR (talk) 00:46, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Hawaiian Kingdom or Kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands versus Kingdom of Hawaii
editAloha KaveBEar:
I am not sure I am doing this correctly as I am new to modifying entries and communicating about them.
Could we have a conversation about this point? I can be emailed at [email protected]. I believe that I can present evidence that there is a distinction that needs recognition between the term "Hawaiian Kingdom" and "Kingdom of Hawaii". They are not synonyms. I propose we discuss it since you object to the changes. The summary of the argument is that the "Kingdom of Hawai'i" would apply until unification after that the almost uniform reference made by the government itself as "Hawaiian Kingdom" not "Kingdom of Hawaii", as evidenced in official documents, including 1852 Constitution Title 1864 Constitution Art. 47 73 76
1887 Constitution Art. 11; 20 45 46 59 76 Signature page
Nearly all treaties use the term "King of Hawaiian Islands" The http://hawaiiankingdom.org/pdf/Sweden_Norway_Treaty.pdf "That His late Majesty King Kamehameha III. , having authorized a Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation, with an additional article thereto annexed, between the Hawaiian Kingdom and the Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway, which was concluded, signed and sealed on the first of July, 1852, by our respective..."
I have found no instance of it systematically calling itself the "Kingdom of Hawaii"
This is just a sample. I assume we share an interest in factual accuracy. And the "Kingdom of Hawaii" is, in my opinion, inaccurate even if used and it needs if not "retirement" an explanation that it isn't a synonym.
If one searches on the term "Supreme Court of the Kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands" one gets returns to the official court reports. So the executive branch refers to the country as the "Kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands" as does the judicial branch. Likewise the legislative branch. https://books.google.com/books/about/Members_of_the_Hawaiian_Kingdom_House_of.html?id=XitqmQEACAAJ
That an error is widespread seems no argument for not correcting it.
It knew itself as the "Hawaiian Kingdom" or "Kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands" not as the "Kingdom of Hawaii" and I am of the opinion that this judgement should be respected.
Please accept this invitation in the spirit it which is offered.
I look forward to your response.
Cheers Steve laudig (talk) 22:23, 8 December 2018 (UTC) Steve Laudig
- It’s not about official nomenclature but consistency. Changing the name requires more consensus at the moment and changing two articles is not addressing the problem and can be viewed as disruptive. The second link you provided is literally a fake book of an old Wikipedia category I created showing I had issues with consistency then. Discuss this on Talk:Kingdom of Hawaii and get consensus for the change to Hawaiian Kingdom if that is a route but I like to look at the historiography of the term beyond 1893 since there was no need to distinguish the monarchy and other subsequent governments: PC, Republic, Territory and the State before 1893. Responding to Tamfang, Anachronist could indeed have said "from 1986" or even "from October 1986". My instinct is that the phrase was used in contradistinction to "early 1960s" in the previous comment. Here's an example from the Oxford English Dictionary which proves Baseball Bugs wrong:

Emma Metcalf Nakuina question
editAloha Kavebear! Fascinated by your knowledge of Emma Metcalf and her circle. I am interested in naming a tributary stream located on land that was part of her father's Metcalf Plantation, "Nakuina Stream" after her. The goal is to do this on her 175th birthday or the 90th anniversary of her passing. I would love to discuss the appropriateness of this gesture with you. Please feel free to reach out to me with "Emma info" at [email protected] I would love to hear from you. 70.143.112.122 (talk) 23:39, 16 November 2018 (UTC)R.Tag

editI read it:
- OUR ROYAL GUEST.
- THE ARRIVAL AT THE WASHINGTON STATION.
PRINCE DAVID KALAKAUA, who was chosen, February 12th, 1874, almost unanimously by the Legislative Assembly to be the King of the Hawaiian Islands, was born at Honolulu on the 16th of November, 1836, and is therefore in his thirty-ninth year. He is the son of the late Hon. C. Kapaakea and the late High Chiefess Keohokalole, who were connected with the various branches of the High Chiefs descended from the ancient sovereigns. He received a good education at the Royal School, and has filled various public positions, which have given him an opportunity to acquire an extensive knowledge of international law, and fit him to act as sovereign of his native country. In 1863 he married the young Chiefess Kapiolani, daughter of the Hawaiian Chief Keawe, and niece of Keliahonui, a chief of Kauai, and thus consolidated the interests of some of the most influential families of the kingdom.
In his personal appearance the King is a stout, portly gentleman. His complexion is dark, and his side-whiskers and hair are black and curly. He has the easy, self-possessed air of a man of the world. He goes about attired in a suit of black broadcloth of the latest and most fashionable cut. On the lapel of his coat is pinned a small strip of parti-colored ribbon indicating the royal Order with which (Continued on page 279)

- Hi KAVEBEAR, also replying here because the ref desks are protected. The bottom image is available in higher resolution at [19], which led me to the publication: Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper (Jan 2, 1875). Your page is here. Even better, scroll to the previous page to read the rest of the article about the King's visit that begins on this page ("Our Royal Guest"). 70.67.193.176 (talk) 19:20, 27 December 2018 (UTC)

Could you help with adding an image I have found to Horace Pauleus Sannon?
editHi KAVEBEAR. From your posts at the reference desk, I get the feeling you know a lot about old images...including how to put them on Wikipedia. Could you help me with one? The image is a photo of Haitian diplomat/historian Horace Pauleus Sannon available on archive.org at https://archive.org/details/amechurchreviewo00keal/page/n3. As an image published in 1909, would it be available for use in the Sannon article? If yes, could you insert it there? Many thanks, 70.67.193.176 (talk) 21:45, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- KAVEBEAR, thank you!! It looks wonderful - I am so pleased you knew how to get rid of the flags as well. Many thanks. 70.67.193.176 (talk) 17:27, 10 January 2019 (UTC)

editOn 25 January 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Simon Kaloa Kaʻai, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Simon Kaloa Kaʻai, a former jailer, became a noble and cabinet minister to a king? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Simon Kaloa Kaʻai. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Simon Kaloa Kaʻai), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
