Image upload
editHi Joedesantis, your image upload File:CallistaGingrich.jpg had been tagged by someone else for speedy deletion as the source website is (C) ARR. After seeing the comment of the user who had uploaded the retouched image version over yours, I have changed the speedy-tag to a no-permission, which gives more time to check the status. I assume that you, being a professional communications director, know about copyright range etc. Therefore, it would be enough if you send a confirmation to [email protected], stating that you (your agency whatever) has enough rights from "Doug DeMark Photography" to release this image under a free license. Our default request would be to get such a statement from the photographer him/herself. --Túrelio (talk) 07:36, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

COI
edit- I noticed your posting on The Conservatism project discussion page. I did not know if you were aware, but guidelines for editing articles about subjects with which one is involved can be found at WP:COI. Hope that is helpful. TFD (talk) 05:46, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
- TFD, a quick look at Joe's userpage history shows that he has been aware of WP:COI since at least May 2011. --Kenatipo speak! 19:32, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
A concern
editWithout any intended malice or lack of assuming good faith, I have raised the question of your participation at the Newt Gingrich presidential campaign, 2012 talk pages. While other editors express a "what's the problem" attitude I am not so lenient. I acknowledge your candor and forthrightness in coming forward as the Communications director for the Gingrich campaign. I just have a problem with it. Your job will be to show Mr. Gingrich in the best possible light and to spurn and reject any negative comments or discussion trends. I would do the same in your position. This is to let you know that I have asked for an explanation of the COI policy at WP:COI/N. I have also raised the issue at Project:Conservatism. My desire is only to safegaurd the neutrality of Wikipedia articles....Buster Seven Talk 23:14, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- My apologies. I jumped the gun. I should have first checked your User page and seen your clear announcement of your position. I only saw your mention of it at the campaign talk page. Many editors have pointed out your straightforwardness as an example of honorable editing by an agent. I agree with their assessment. I further agree with Editor Naraht that adding Communications Director to your signature might be a transparent frankness on your part. While the existence of paid operatives at campaign articles is, to me, a cut-and-dry conclusion it is rare for them to admit it. Someone suggested a barnstar for your acknowledgement...maybe I can dig one up...Buster Seven Talk 08:47, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks, Buster. No harm, no foul. Joedesantis (talk) 16:10, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
Just FYI, if you did want to adjust your signature, Joe, up at the top right you'll see "My preferences". Click on that, and then scroll down this Preferences page and you will see that you can give a longer signature if you like. The longer signature will not appear on article history pages which give edit summaries, but it would appear at the end of your Talk page comments. If you click on the "Treat the above as wiki markup" box, markup may be used in the box, such that you could get a bit fancy with it looking like: Joe de Santis Communications Director, Gingrich 2012 (talk) You would have to hit "edit" on this page to see what the markup looks like that I just wrote there.--Brian Dell (talk) 00:34, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Signatures
editI'm sure if you ask at WP:Help desk they can give you clear instructions on how to do it. You might point out the situation and mention you want to include your title. Or you can type it in just before you sign. That way you could edit other articles and talk pages and your signature would remain generic..```Buster Seven Talk 00:42, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you
editThank you for being open about your identity and treating the community with respect. Reviewing your edit history, I see that you have not made any edits to article space (only talk pages) for many months - this is a very good thing indeed. Please know that as long as you continue following these practices, I will support your participation and use it as a model for others.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 12:15, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Need help clarifying
editHi Joe. If you haven't been driven off by the attacks, would you mind helping clarify one small point regarding Newt Gingrich and the 2012 campaign? There's a small, slow-moving edit war in progress on the main presidential campaign and primaries pages as to whether he is "from" Georgia or Virginia. Everybody knows, of course, that he represented Georgia in Congress, but he has reportedly lived in Virginia for several years. His FEC filing shows a Georgia address, but that probably represents the campaign (the similar line on Jon Huntsman's filing showed Orlando, Florida). I would think that for election purposes, we should show the state of legal residence – the state of which the governor, if chosen as his running mate, could not receive the electoral votes of the state's electors voting for Gingrich himself. A minor nit indeed, but something I would hope you could clear up rather easily, with some reasonable sources. TIA. Fat&Happy (talk) 20:11, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Behind the 8 Ball
editAs I'm sure you are aware, I don't and will not attack you. Other editors may interpret my questions and a pursuit of answers as attacks but that is the self-imposed limitation of those editors. Paid operatives are not a new issue w/ me. I spent many long hours at the Sarah Palin article, in 2008, in discussions about that very subject. The existence of campaign staff members at the articles about the candidate for which they work is a foregone conclusion. I respect the fact that you came forward. Wikipedia is too good a free source not to embrace as a vehicle. I have no gripe against you. I just can't see how you can do your job and still remain impartial. If your title was Comm Dir for the Republican Party I might grasp the possibility. I have no beef as long as you remain transparent. I have no beef if edits by volunteer editors, that germinate from Gingrich HeadQuarters, are clearly noted as such, at least at the talk Page. One last thing about the article. It mentions a changing of staff personel somewhere along the line. But then no mention is made of re-staffing. The reader is left in the dark as to how many, which positions, etc. The impression I get is that there was a major shift in direction and new staff people came on board...but no mention is made of it. BTW...Were you a part of that changeover? FYI...I am not a REP or a DEM. I am a libertarian (note the small "ell"). ```Buster Seven Talk 06:28, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Hello, and thank you for disclosing your conflict of interest. The fact that Callista is Speaker Gingrich's third wife is well-known and indisputable. Please do not remove it from her biography. Instead, please defer to the judgment of experienced editors, and raise your concerns on the talk page. Thank you. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:20, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
- Worth noting is that CNN left out my first sentence when they quoted what I wrote above. It seems that you have complied with our standards for quite a while. You are welcome, in my view, to suggest changes on the talk page of any Gingrich related article. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:31, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
- Cullen, maybe you should tell CNN who Jimbo Wales is, and, point them to his Thank You note on this very page. Or shall we all follow the rubric of "please defer to the judgment of experienced CNN editors"? lol ! --Kenatipo speak! 19:11, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion, Kenatipo, but I am not interested in trying to correct CNN's misunderstandings, but would always try to make an accurate comment if asked for one. The more I look into this, the more I conclude that Joe DeSantis has done nothing "wrong" on Wikipedia, lately at least. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 01:37, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
- (I posted this on my talk page, Cullen, but I don't think you've seen it): Hi, Cullen. I don't think anyone blames you that CNN didn't quote you fully. Not your fault. But, did Joe DeSantis ever in fact violate our COI guideline? Are we talking about removing "third wife" from the lead of the Callista article? --Kenatipo speak! 15:42, 9 February 2012 (UTC) --Kenatipo speak! 03:19, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

CNN article on Joe DeSantis' Wikipedia edits (copied from Newt Gingrich article talk page)
editJoe, the following was on the Newt Gingrich article talk page until someone removed it. I don't know if you saw it, but I thought you ought to. The removal is probably justified. I now have a copy of it on my own talk page. --Kenatipo speak! 02:07, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

- For your further amazement, I will be voting for Speaker Gingrich when the Republican primary is held here in the Old Dominion in about a month (if I can figure out how to do a write-in on an electronic voting machine). --Kenatipo speak! 21:10, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

The CNN Story
editJoe, I thought you might enjoy this article coming to your defense. I've also been correcting people on Twitter. Though clearly it's a drop in the bucket compared to CNN's readership and corrections rarely have the same voice as a train wreck.
I just posted a comment on the blog that CNN's level of misunderstanding is alarmingly common. I guess you could say I'm Assuming Good Faith on CNN's part. But there is an overwhelming relevance that Newt recently humiliated CNN at the debates. Then, not long after, CNN comes out with a misleading story on a similar topic. Even as an Obama supporter, I can't help but suspect a connection. Anyways, best of luck. King4057 (talk) 20:07, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
Speedy deletion
editAn important project WP:WEaPOn (about Paid Operatives) I have initiated is up for speedy. Can you assist? - WP:COI is a behavioral guideline. It is not a policy. It is a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow, though it is best treated with common sense, and occasional exceptions may apply. It DOES NOT state, Joe, that you are REQUIRED to use a "request edit" tag: it says that you are strongly encouraged to use one when requesting edits on the article's talk page. In my opinion, your signature alone identifies you well enough. --Kenatipo speak! 00:43, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
- Editor DeSantis. This is what the tag looks like: {{request edit}} Buster Seven Talk 07:22, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

- Editor DeSantis. Thanks for using the tag. Your good faith efforts are appreciated and always have been. While another editor seems to think I am obsessed with you, that is not the case. I do, however, feel that paid editing of all types is a very timely situation that requires a lot of soul-searching, discussion and honest communication from many vantage points. Your vantage point is very interesting and worth sharing with you fellow Wikipedians. If you get a chance, please check out Wikipedia:Requests for comment/COI. Your insight and perceptions will assist in formulating a workable standard that all can benfit from....especially our readers. Your coming forward and self-identifying yourself was noble. And, in all earnesty, you have the burden of being a Jimbo-appointed model of paid editor behavior. Thanking you in advance...```Buster Seven Talk 21:57, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Newt Gingrich talk page
editHi Joedesantis. I saw your request here. First, you may want to follow up on that. Also, in the future, when an article is above a B class (Newt Gingrich article is a G class article), you may want to propose your edit requests in terms of Wikipedia:Good article criteria or Wikipedia:Featured article criteria as well as what you originally listed as your reasons for wanting to change the article. Citing article criteria may give people another reason to support your request. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 08:10, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
Conflict of Interest Certification
editEditor DeSantis. A very important discussion is taking place regarding COI. Please see Wikipedia:COI certification. As I've said before, your good faith efforts are appreciated and always have been. The soul-searching, discussion and honest communication from many vantage points continues and, in my opinion, you should be part of the conversation. Again, your vantage point is very interesting and worth sharing with you fellow Wikipedians. Sharing your perceptions and experiences at the various Gingrich pages will assist in formulating a workable standard that all can benfit from....especially our readers. You may have come to Wikipedia only to shape your candidates articles. Now you are "just" an editor, but one with important insights into the situation. Please assist. ```Buster Seven Talk 13:11, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
Steven Crowder
editI am trying to establish a fair and accurate page for Steven Crowder who is an avid supporter of Americans for Prosperity, but feel I am being Wiki-bullied by editors who have a personal dislike for him and want to include libelous/POV comments about him.
