Nine Days Wonder

I have removed from the Jane Grey article your entry suggesting that the phrase "nine day wonder" is derived from Jane's reign. That is simply not true. The phrase was in use long before Jane lived or reigned, dating back at least to Geoffrey Chaucer's play "Troilus and Cressida" written in the 14th century. The Oxford Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language states that the phrase can be found in texts dating as far back as 1325. PhD Historian 08:30, 16 February 2007 (UTC) alright. Belfast Blitz

Its tricky to name the Republic of Ireland in 1941. The Irish Free State ceased in 1937. The 1937 constitution says that “the name of the state is Éire, or, in the English language, Ireland”. "Éire" is not an English language word, so you can't use that. Nor can you use the word "Ireland" as it could refer to the entire island. (the constitution did claim the entire island, this came up when the Irish protested to the Germans for the Blitz - Irish territory was being bombed) The British "Ireland Act" of 1949 reads: "that part of Ireland heretofore known as Eire...may [be referred to] as the Republic of Ireland.”. At the time people would have used other terms, sch as "the 26 counties" ClemMcGann (talk) 13:01, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

July 2008

Please do not add commentary or your own personal analysis to Wikipedia articles, as you did to Richard III (play). Doing so violates Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy and breaches the formal tone expected in an encyclopedia. Thank you. Phrases such as “a raving queen” and “by morons and Americans” fail to provide a neutral point of view in the text. Hi Jatrius,

First, I think you mistook my User page for my Talk page, and left your message at the former. I've moved it to the Talk page, but for future reference it's generally intended that the Talk page be used for such messages and doing so will also alert the user that there are new messages waiting.

Second, if the language in question is a direct quotation then it needs to be marked as such — e.g. by placing it in quotation marks — and reliably cited to a suitable secondary source. The body text of a Wikipedia article cannot use phrases such as “a raving queen” and “by morons and Americans”.

Third, if you see information in a Wikipedia article whose correctness you dispute then you should tag it with a {{cn}} template. It will render in the article as “” which will alert editors that the relevant bit of text needs to be properly cited. It's generally not a good idea to delete information from Wikipedia, unless it is obvious vandalism, copyright violation, or other blatant violation of Wikipedia policy.

Finally, I reverted your edits for the sole reason that they introduced language that is inappropriate for the body text of an encyclopedia. I have no particular issue with the characterization or the language as such; if you can provide a reliable source and clearly mark it as a direct quotation then there is no need to “… appeal to any higher authority about [my] intervention … ”. Apart from matters of policy, Wikipedia operates on consensus among editors and reliable sources (see the Five Pillars of Wikipedia for details).

New cfds regarding "Old Fooians"

Two new cfds propose the renaming of some twenty categories. Most of those who took part in last year's cfd "Former pupils by school in the United Kingdom" seem unaware of them, so I am notifying all those who took part in that discussion, to improve the quality of the discussion by broadening participation to more fully achieve consensus.
