Sorry
editI think I owe you an apology for jumping to conclusions and not assuming good faith. I'm sorry about that and I hope I didn't cause bad feelings toward Wikipedia.
Also, you didn't get the official welcome message, but here are the salient points:
- WP:Introduction is a useful page with information for new editors. Be sure to check it out.
- If anything is unclear to you, you can visit WP:Questions or place {{helpme}} on this page. Someone will shortly show up to answer your questions.

- Not at all; the experience has actually interested me in further contributing to Wikipedia. You were quite right to show I relied too much on Twiplomacy.com. The others were also correct to point out that I wrote an essay instead of an encyclopedia article. I was actually going to contact you to check out some photos before trying to post them to the article (if it's not deleted!), as I've read that they very frequently get axed. If I manage to later post some to my sandbox and point you to them, would you be willing to see if they pass Wikipedia's guidelines? D.a.kelm (talk) 03:50, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
- The thing with images is that there are two places to upload them, and the copyright issues are different:
- Free images (e.g. created by yourself or published under a Creative Commons license by others) are acceptable at WikiMedia Commons;
- Non-free images such as press photos may be acceptable on Wikipedia as fair use, but only for articles that they directly pertain to.
- The reason is that Commons operates under a different law. I personally don't bother with fair use images (or photos, for that matter), but WP:FAIRUSE gives an overview of what is and what is not allowed. Additionally, there's a system where you can ask the copyright holder to release images for use by WikiMedia (I think it's called OTRS), but I've never actually used that.
- If you want an article to be reviewed before posting, it's best to go through WP:Articles for Creation which allows you to post a draft and get feedback before publication. You can ping me too. QVVERTYVS (hm?) 13:51, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, Qwertyus. Gave it a try while waiting for your reply and struck out. Maybe next time.[[User:d.a.kelm|d.a.kelm (talk) 18:54, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
- By the way, how long does a decision about deletion usually take? I'm wondering how long the giant red banner will remain at the top of the page.[[User:d.a.kelm|d.a.kelm (talk) 18:55, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
- One week. QVVERTYVS (hm?) 19:25, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Dmitri Trenin Press.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:Dmitri Trenin Press.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.
If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to [email protected], stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to [email protected].
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Peripitus (Talk) 11:07, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, Peripitus. I'll try again some other time.[[User:d.a.kelm|d.a.kelm (talk) 18:54, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
