Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you as well! I'm trying to do some work on Commons, it's a little quieter over there, but there aren't many guidelines so it's sorta slow going. Cheers, Mak (talk) 22:21, 1 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ok, so I'm trying to categorize a little bit at Commons, so my brain is about to explode. Am I correct in thinking that Monteverdi pieces should not be in Category:Renaissance music, or is he transitional enough to be in both Renaissance music and Baroque music? Thanks, Mak (talk) 23:38, 1 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
His earlier madrigal books (up to Book V) are stylistically more akin to Lassus and Wert than to the early Baroque. There's probably other prima prattica things I don't know as well. Check out the Grove article, e.g. section 8, works of the Mantua years. I always classify his earlier (before his edit war with Artusi) music as Renaissance, and almost everything after that as Baroque. :) Antandrus (talk) 23:43, 1 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, makes sense, thanks. I hereby acknowledge your message. Mak (talk) 23:44, 1 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Speaking of the Renaissance

What does "an accelerated revalidation of music on a conceptual level" mean? Mak (talk) 16:10, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hm, that sounds like one of those things you hear uttered in a graduate seminar, which causes a Moment of Silence, during which you can hear crickets. I'm not sure what it means, but it reminds me of a lovely essay by Orwell we have discussed. :) Antandrus (talk) 16:15, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I suspected that might be the case. Mak (talk) 16:28, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

"It is safe to state that the Italian humanist movement, uncovering and proliferating the aesthetics of antique Roman and Greek art, contributed to an accelerated revalidation of music on a conceptual level, buts its direct influence on music theory, composition and performance remain suggestive."

That's got me confused as well. I'll be somewhat surprised if there's that rare being, a reliable source, for all that. Sounds horribly like postgrad NFT to me. If not even something worse. It just doesn't make sense even on a basic grammatical level, which is about all that I understand. "Remain suggestive" of what, may I ask? It doesn't say. The second half of the sentence is entirely disconnected from the first. How bizarre. Moreschi Deletion! 16:49, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I love that essay, and it's absolutely applicable in this case. The Sokal Affair is also one of my favorite send-ups of this sort of thing. (Weariness of fighting that sort of crud is one of the main reasons I'm no longer in academia.) Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 17:10, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Barack Obama

Copied from my posting to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection and also copied to Talk:Barack Obama:

I request that the current semi-protection tag be changed to the less obtrusive {{sprotected2}} and removed after an appropriate timeout interval. I believe that any move to establish permanent semi-protection is premature and preemptive for this article. I have previously expressed this view on the article's talk page, where no consensus has yet emerged on the issue. While it is true that some IP edits have been needlesome, they are manageable because the article is closely watched by a global audience. Reverts have been made by many editors, including some with IP addresses. Blatant vandalism is usually corrected within minutes and at all hours of the day. I have been an active contributor to the article since September 2006. Though I appreciate that there are others who may define the role of semi-protection differently, I have reviewed the policy documents and I think my view is more to the mainstream of the current thinking. Kindly consider my request. --HailFire 15:27, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Wiki Meeting

Hi, Antandrus. Thanks for saying Happy New Year. As I have been wikipedian since Last Year March, but have been active since Last year April. I really need to ask you about Wiki Meeting. Is there always Wiki Meeting in Same Place in every one year? In my opinion, Wiki Meeting is always openning in everywhere. For Example, I live in Los Angeles area, but you live in Santa Barbara which is next to Solvang, and Ventura(Oxnard). I remerber that I enjoyed in Santa Barbara about before 3 years ago when I came to America from my own country. Is Wiki Meeting's location always different even in Los Angeles Area? Is Wiki Meeting in Los Angeles always be in Los Angeles? or Santa Barbara? Because we are California Wikipedian. Have you ever participated in Wiki Meeting with Jimbo Wales? Just want to know about Wiki Meeting in Los Angeles. So Could you reply this in my talk page? Cheers!! Daniel5127 <Talk> 00:17, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks you for your response, and providing the WikiMeeting section in your area. For Meeting in Santa Barbara, did you make a wikimeeting plan with other wikipedians in Last year in Santa Barbara? Daniel5127 <Talk> 03:31, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Baroque Music

Thank you for the reception! I think I will go ahead and start working on the Baroque music article. My first project will be to expand the "early Baroque" part. However, I don't have experience contributing to wikipedia, and I do think that both the "Baroque vs Renaissance style" and "Baroque vs Classical style" session are not necessary, since the former will be explained in the "Early baroque" part, and the latter will be discussed in the "transition to the Classical era". My question is: should I announce those ideas in the discussion page and wait for approval, or should I just go ahead and make the changes (and explain them in the discussion page)? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Narazadd (talkcontribs) 19:32, 4 January 2007 (UTC).Reply

Peter Philips

Hi Antandrus, and Happy New Year! I've posted an article on Peter Philips, as suggested. Hope it's OK... Nick Michael 23:19, 8 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks a lot Antandrus. But may I differ with you as to the word 'virginal(s)'? Although the singular is found, the great majority of the mentions is in the plural, even when talking about a single instrument (cf 'trousers' 'scissors'): example; also [1] and [2]. Wictionary needs correcting in this, but I don't subscribe to it yet... If I have convinced you, would you consider reverting the spelling to the plural form?? Nick Michael 08:24, 9 January 2007

(UTC)

Virginals just redirects to harpsichord... I know, which is why I didn't include the link in the first place. Do you think it's better to have a redirect to 'Harpsichord' (which includes 'Virginals'), or no link at all. No opinion myself. Except I suppose there should be a separate article on Virginals - which I'd enjoy writing one day...! Cheers Nick Michael 16:16, 9 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Weird medieval question

Linkspam Question

H Antandrus. I noticed you reverted a users insertion of linkspam into the Saddam Hussein Article. I was checking this guy's contributions and I noticed two unusual things. One, he has only made three edits. One, a vandalism edit about 6 months ago. The linkspam he added to the Saddam Hussein page, and finally he created his userpage, but all it has on it are the linkspam he added to the Saddam page. I clicked through to the link and it goes to a video he has uploaaded on Youtube (same username), so obviously he is trying to do this to ratchet up the views and attract traffic to his youtube and google video page. I didnt want to just go in and blank his userpage, so I thought I'd ask someone who probably knows more about this area than me...namely you. As this account appears to have been used only for vandalism and linkspam, (both on article and userpages) what should be done? Caper13 03:55, 11 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Deletion?

Hello,

I have just checked the page I set up HAYDN - Nobody Knows Me to discover that you have deleted it due to the fact that there was only one source for the information and product. Please, can you give me some tips on how to get around this? I spent time and care to get this page correct even obtaining permission from the publisher of the book and from the author so I could use his picture and place his book on here. I thought this was a public arena to share things of interest with other? I thought a true story of a boys struggle would be of extreme interest to people and I wanted to share it. What information would I have to obtain to be permitted to use this apparent elitist site? Can only the author or publisher place books or entertainment on here? I am being to think this site is a little strict.

Thanks, Shane —The preceding unsigned comment was added by TrashNews (talkcontribs) 13:51, 15 January 2007 (UTC).Reply

I am a moderately experienced user, but there are clearly gaps in my education. This user, who has something over 200 sockpuppets, who get blocked (of course) as soon as they appear, appears to have infinite access to the project. Is it not possible to identify the site within which he clearly has access to a vast number of IP addresses and block the lot? Or, if it is a University or similar establishment, contact the powers-that-be on-site and work with them to eradicate his activity? Or am I being naiive and stupid? I ask you because, unless he has created another one while I was typing, you are the last admin to block one of his creations.--Anthony.bradbury 00:49, 21 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am not an admin (yet) and my sockpuppet-related activity is therefore clearly limited. But I do a great deal of NP-patrolling, and flag his articles ASAP. But a macro-block would have made life so much easier. I take your point about collateral damage. Is it wholly unacceptable?--Anthony.bradbury 00:58, 21 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

[4] This time it DID receive a detailed response, but it's WAY beyond my level of understanding. Can you advise or direct me to the proper folks? Thanks! ~~Newbie Mpwrmnt 08:34, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Antandrus

Thanks for getting back to me. I didn't realise the person already had to be established. I feel a bit stupid because I received a message from HAYDN himself and he also said the same as you that this page is not to be used as a career launching platform. I didn't mean any offence I just wanted to make people aware of a really good book. HAYDN told me to wait and see if he does well first. He uses this place alot and seems to know the rules better than I.

Have a good day
Shane. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by TrashNews (talkcontribs) 11:58, 25 January 2007 (UTC).Reply

You're welcome. I wish your acquaintance's career well, and hope he can have a verifiable article some day. Please feel free to contribute to Wikipedia; it's a fun place. Antandrus (talk) 03:41, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Need some admin assistance

Remember the other night we talked about my growing fanclub? Could you take the time to look at Metallicaman2112 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). He started out as a troll/nonsense editor but quickly spiralled into a vandalism only account. I would ask that pay particular attention to User talk:Metallicaman2112 and the 'kind' little notes he has added there recently. Let me know what you think. Thanks, cheers and take care! Thank you "Sir". I've actually had some excellent Wiki-collaborations/Wiki-conversations with a number of 'non-kids' lately that have been very positive. We elders are few...but we are here...whether the young'ns like it ot nor :) My AGF is very thin that you won't be talking with our 'uncivil sprout' again. After 21000+ edits...I've seen quite a few like him...not too many of them "come back from the shadows". Cheers...have a good weekend! Anger22 (Talk 2 22) 02:18, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Shewantsrevengealbum.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:Shewantsrevengealbum.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. My "upload", to anyone reading this thread, was a vandalism revert. Since I deleted the actual vandal images, it appears that I was the uploader. This is a minor bug in the image-tagging mechanism. Antandrus (talk) 04:55, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikibreak

Just a quick note to let you know I'm taking a reluctant Wikibreak due to the intervention of Real Life™ (although I may still be able to run RobotG). My very best wishes to you (and since I know my Wiki-friends watch your talk page I extend those best wishes to all of them as well). Hope you enjoy your (much shorter) break! I'll be back! ANI Thanks

Thank you very much for your follow up on the George Reeves situation from ANI. I completely missed your message, which probably would have triggered me to do my first non-vandal block (that's some fascinating reading at the deleted long term page). PullToOpen noticed it and followed up at RFCU which was positive. My lesson here is to AGF, but to dig deeper before assuming something is a straight up mediation.

And a belated thank you for your vote of confidence at my recent RFA! Just in time to help y'all a little with that fascinating little Colbert thing the night before last... :) Kuru talk 01:01, 1 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Reverting vandalism

Thanks for helping by reverting Underground Railroad. However, reverting vandalism shouldn't be marked as a minor edit. You might also consider adding warnings to the talk pages of the vandals. (I added a warning for that edit.) wrp103 (Bill Pringle) 03:13, 1 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

When you use admin rollback it's automatically marked as a minor edit. Mak (talk) 03:25, 1 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank You x2

Just wanted to commend your swift action on the vandalism of User:35.11.229.96. I'd reverted his changes on Lucifer, and by the time I'd gotten to double-check which subst's to use on vandals' talk pages, I found out that:

(a) he'd already vandalized again, (b) you'd already reverted it, and (c) you'd already managed to warn him on his talk page.

By now, it looks like he's realized that he can't make any permanent changes to the encyclopedia, and stopped.

So, thanks a bunch. Drostie 04:57, 2 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

And thank for the revert of the vandal's work on Charles I. Maybe you should consider blocking User:158.91.160.74 who is a deliberate vandal. David Lauder 18:11, 2 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

User:Yaay!!

Hi, I am requesting that you ban this user immediately. I noticed the warning you placed on his talk page. Since that warning, he has vandalized 3 other articles, 2 of which I have reverted. Thanks. Wl219 17:24, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I left a "last warning". Looks like he's stopped. I'll block him if he vandalises again. Antandrus (talk) 21:37, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Technical reversion question

Hello there! Hoping you are keeping the faith and also avoiding unnecessary stuff, whatever it might be. I have noticed that you (& others) have a way of marking your reversions with a stock identifier, something like "reverting edits by XXX..." How do you do that? I just keep putting "rv" into the comment box, but yours seems so much more official. Merci! --Wspencer11 (talk to me...) 01:15, 7 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Vandal 217.180.78.33

217.180.78.33 is having a great time vandalizing St. Ambrose College and my talk page. He has chosen to steal your identity in leaving me the following message:

You have been temporarily blocked from editing Wikipedia as a result of being a nerd! You are free to make constructive edits after the block has expired, but please note that being a nerd will not be tolerated. Antandrus (talk) 10:51, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Shaunda -- he's been blocked again ([6]). Let me know if you have trouble with this user again. Antandrus (talk) 16:06, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi. Immediately upon his band being lifted he wrote a message supposedly from me on his talk page (the Wikipedia nerd bit). I haven't even looked yet to see what other vandaism he's done. Shaundakulbara 10:25, 8 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Well, other than the attack I see no vandalism yet. He did however falsify 1 message from you (before the block), 3 from me, and removed a warning from another editor. Jeeze, some people get blocked for disagreeing a little too impolitely and this fellow is hell bent on harassment and vandalism. We can't do any better than 24 hr block? Thanks. Shaundakulbara 10:34, 8 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure how but the content of Andrew Flatley's User Page has disapeared and I don't know how to get it back. Can you please help (it was your name that was the most recent on his talk page, ehich i have contacted you).

Yes--he had moved it into the mainspace, which is inappropriate since the encyclopedia is only for people who are notable by the community's standards, and only for biographies which can be sourced reliably using multiple independent published sources. However I undeleted the most recent version and put it back on his user page. Thanks, Antandrus (talk) 23:57, 9 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
