About

Now THIS is fun!

Originally from Atlanta, I now live in the Richmond, Virginia, USA area. By day, I am an information security officer; at other times, I'm just a jack-of-all-trades and master of none.

I'm an instrument-rated airplane pilot (ASEL), motorcyclist (dirt and street), amateur (as in not-very-good) musician, and the worst golfer imaginable. Over the last 10 years or so, I've spent more and more time seeing the world from the seat of a touring motorcycle.

Someday, I hope to ride the Trans America Trail and the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, but that's going to take a lighter bike (that can handle unpaved roads).

Don't be a Dick!

Lately, I've spent a fair amount of time patrolling recent changes to high-volume Wikipedia pages. Wow! What an interesting experience! I feel I'm becoming something of a bastard regarding unsourced additions to the encyclopedia.

If nothing else, it's an incredible exercise in managing emotional responses, which is more difficult than I ever imagined it would be. This cute little image is both a reminder to me and a pointer to an article on the subject, if you're interested.

As I gain more experience, I intend to post descriptions of the more noteworthy ones here. Whether educational or humorous, they are always interesting!

Favorite Quotations

My new favorite quote for Wikipedia:

Another key to the problem here, {name of contentious editor}, is you don't see yourself as having an opinion; you see yourself as bearing The Truth. You perceive your biases as neutral.

Other favorites:

I can NOT emphasize this enough:
There seems to be a terrible bias among some editors that some sort of random speculative "I heard it somewhere" pseudo information is to be tagged with a "needs a cite" tag. Wrong. It should be removed, aggressively, unless it can be sourced. This is true of all information, but it is particularly true of negative information about living persons.
I think a fair number of people need to be kicked out of the project just for being lousy writers. (This is not a policy statement, just a statement of attitude and frustration.)

— Jimmy Wales, [WikiEN-l] Factions vs. Division Tue May 16 20:30:15 UTC 2006

Never wrestle with a pig. You both get all dirty, and the pig likes it!

— Unknown

Either do, or do not; there is no try.

— Yoda, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Behold, I am become Death, destroyer of worlds!

— Robert Oppenheimer, quoting Vishnu from The Bagavad Gita after seeing Trinity detonation

And I looked and I beheld a pale horse; and the the name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.

— The Revelation to John, The Holy Bible
