Polandball, alternatively known in general as countryballs, is an internet meme that consists of user-created cartoon comics, artworks, and communities. It satirizes countries and their political relations, personified as balls (excluding a few countries) with simple eyes and their flag as their skin (sometimes their clothing), interacting with each other mostly in poorly-written English (Unless it is an English speaking nation), and exhibiting personalities derived from national and international opinions and stereotypes of them. The subculture and comics can be referred to alternatively as Polandball (even if Poland does not appear in the comic itself) or countryballs. [1]

The meme has officially developed differently than many other internet memes in that it has a strong community of followers across many websites, but is not always completely known or understood outside of its communities. Regardless, Polandball has become a staple of many websites to depict international events. It has drawn the attention of scholars, front pages of websites and newspapers, game developers, politicians and ministries, and even celebrities, amongst other people.

Concepts

In Polandball, the characters are countries personified in a ball with a life of their own and who do everyday human things, however, it also contains some concepts that must be explained if you are a new follower, below:

Anschluss

This concept consists of a ball getting so angry that it turns into a rectangle with small eyes and becomes a cannibal and eats other balls, the most common example is Reichtangle who eats Polandball. However, other countries can also make an anschluss, for example, USAball transforms into a mixed shape between a rectangle and a blob, following the stereotype that Americans eat a lot of junk/fast food, particularly McDonald's.

Börk

It is a meaningless word that sounds like a Swedish word, Swedenball commonly repeats this word, however the other balls have börk.

Emus

Acording to Polandball Wiki, Emus are a secret way to destroy Australia. In the Polandball comics, Emus sometimes make appearances as a subject of the Emu War or upon the mention of dangerous animals. They don't kill anyone and are very peaceful animals BUT they are very hostile to Australiaball. Eyepatches

The eyepatch is a unique feature of some countryballs' decors. Many countryballs with special insignias on their flags use them. They are based off of real eyepatches. In Polandball, eyepatches are used when an important insignia on a countryball's flag interferes with where the eyes on a countryball should typically go. The eyepatch permits the insignia to go overtop of the eye.

The lines around his ball shape indicate that it is an eyepatch. One of the most common and well-known eyepatches for countryballs is that of Serbiaball. In some Polandball communities, it is obligatory that Serbia has one. It is not obligatory in all of Polandball, however, for any countryball that could use an eyepatch to use one.

Using an emblem in a countryball's canton or the center of a flag as an eyepatch is uncommon and not typically recommended by communities. Eyepatches are most common for flags that contain their emblems in the hoist of the flag.

However, this is pretty not used so much and is mainly used for Serbiaball, Austria-Hungaryball (double eyepatch), Spainball, Portugalball Sloveniaball, Slovakiaball, and Skopjeball.

Kawaii

Kawaii（from Japanese 可愛かわい - cute）is a feature in some Polandball works. It is especially prominent in the Facebook Polandball Community. Other than this, it is featured as a stereotype of Japanball.

Kurwa

Kurwa (IPA: /'kur.va/) is an exclamation done by Polandball when he gets mad or is worried. Polandball often use it when Germanyball and Russiaball try anschlussing him, as he's scared.

Stereotypes!!!!!

Stereotypes are a critical component of any Polandball comic. They are the attributes each country possesses for comedic effect. These stereotypes can range from subtle to blunt, meta to deadpan, and completely non-offensive to "holy-shit-2-edgy-4-me" offensive.
