People tend to call me Mish, online and in the 'real' world.

I have not edited for some time, due to poor health & needing to avoid stress. Happy to undertake small edits upon requests, provided they are not contentious.

Stating my position

I have no COI when it comes to LGBTI articles, but I have some knowledge of the issues on some of these pages as a result of my academic work in that area, so I will contribute to those pages if possible, and try to maintain and enforce NPOV as far as I am able. I also have other interests in religion, such as Anglicanism and Christianity, and many other topics, so will also contribute to those pages when the occasion arises. I put a similar comment along similar lines here before, but was criticised for doing so as it was seen as claiming some kind of superior knowledge. Things that make me mad

  • Historical revisionism.
  • Personality attack posing as BLP.
  • If you could fart in an LGBT article, some asshole would want a verifiable source for it.
  • Stupidity
  • Some bizarre logic that places a Hungarian in Austria.
  • That some people have to be wrestled into seeing sense.
  • Belief that this is about what is 'true' (or worse, 'right'). Nothing is true or false, only reliable sources count.

about me

My girlfriend describes me as a "cyberpath" - an online psychopath. I think it sounds rather cute myself. Kind of like the Texas cat-5 Massacre.

I am a fundaphobe - having a strong and deep seated rational fear of and aversion to fundamentalists. I am also a recovering Christian, but not yet ready to commit to the ex-God movement. I don't think I am a fundamentalist in denial, but the childhood exposure to Baptist and Presbyterian churches probably left some deep scars that affected my religious development into adulthood. My being groomed to go to church is the main reason I became a Christian. Matthew 7:21-23

  • Optimism should have a separate page that focuses on the philosophical idea of optimism and distinguishes the philosophical view from "positive thinking" and other everyday uses of the word.
  • Philosophy of social science, has some okay points but requires elaboration on Wittgenstein and Winch, perhaps other linguistic critiques, whether logical positivist or postmodernist.
  • Exchange value needs to be redone, it shouldn't be under 'Marxist theory'- although it's an important component of Marxist theory it's also vital for all economics. That said the article's weight on Marx is also absurd.
  • German Idealism and the articles related to it may need to be rewritten or expanded to avoid undue weight on Arthur Schopenhauer.
  • Protected values first section confuses right action and values and needs a copy edit, moving and wikifying
  • Quality (philosophy) needs a more clear explanation.
  • Socratic dialogues could do with some tidying and clarification. See the talk page for one suggested change.
  • Problem of universals: The introductory definition is (perhaps) fixed. But, the article is poor. Check out the German version.
  • Teleology: the article is shallow and inconsistent.
  • Existentialism: the quality of this article varies wildly and is in desperate need of expert attention.
  • Analytic philosophy This is a very major topic, but still has several sections which are stubs, and several topics which are not covered.
  • Lifeworld A philosophical concept that seems to have fallen exclusively into the hands of the sociologists. Could use some attention; it's a major and complex issue in phenomenology.
  • Perception Needs the attention of philosophically minded Wikipedians. This is only the start of an overhaul of perception and related articles.

Observation of a paradox

The Elvis Presley phenomenon has a whole section devoted to the issue of whether he is still alive and Elvis sightings. The 'facts' cannot be established, but as he is dead such speculation passes the BLP test. Or does it? The claims are that he is still alive. So, if we are to be neutral, then BLP would apply (rather than a non-neutral position that he is alive or dead). If we are to restrict coverage of speculation about living persons from the media, and not allow a neutral summary of such information and the response, then the speculation about Elvis still being alive should not be in the article - it would violate BLP policy. if this were followed, the section would be excluded, BLP would no longer apply, as the assertion that he lives is gone. If BLP does not apply, then there would be no problem in the speculation about Elvis being alive being covered - but as soon as it is, it would need to be removed. This can not be easily resolved if you seek to apply a restriction upon this encyclopedia that is unnecessary: restricting coverage of discussion about living individuals that is in the public domain, noteworthy, and covered by the press, within the constraints of a duty to respect privacy.
