Tamil actor Vijay's action-thriller Thuppakki managed to collect a whopping Rs.10.01 crore within the first three days of its release in Tamil Nadu. The film collected approximately Rs.10.01 crore from Tamil Nadu in the first three days. This is one of the best openings for a Tamil film released this year. Thuppakki is doing extraordinary business in other parts of the country too," Trinath, trade analyst told IANS. The numbers from other parts of the country and overseas are yet to come in," he added. Thuppakki, which released on November 13 worldwide in over 1,000 screens, is about a captain from the Indian Army, played by Vijay, who comes to Mumbai on a vacation, but gets himself involved in a terrorist scheme, which is bigger than anticipated. Kajal Agarwal, Satyan, Mano Bala, Vidyut Jamwal and Jayaram have played key roles in the film, which is directed by A.R. Murugadoss, and has music by Harris Jeyaraj. Meanwhile, the Telugu dubbed version of the film titled Thupaki faced release problems on the opening day in Andhra Pradesh. The Telugu version of the film couldn't be released in most theatres in Andhra Pradesh because of some misunderstanding between the distributors and theatre owners, but all that got resolved very soon. The film has done equally good business in Andhra Pradesh too," added Trinath. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.193.60.139 (talk) 04:29, 18 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Budget

edit

Please remove the budget 70 crore figure. It is exaggerated and unreliable. Tamil film industry is only 25% of Hindi film industry. Recent Bollywood release Jab Tak Hai Jaan had a reported budget of merely 50 crore. Official budget figure will be announced within a month.

Note: I am not doing the GA review, but I thought I'd make some comments on this before the review is started.

  1. The citation provided for the Vijay Awards only backs up the claims of the winners - it makes no mention of the nominees. Another one is needed for the nominees.
  2. There is no in-line citation for the 2nd South Indian International Movie Awards in the table.
  3. Should the fight choreographer/stunt director be "Kecha", or "Kechcha"? Not having looked myself, I don't know. Neither name is mentioned anywhere in the main article - this may want to be sorted.
  4. The currency situation in the "Overseas" section (under box office) is a mess - that needs work.
  5. "in a Special Appearance" from the "Cast" section - that may want clarifying a little bit.
  6. The "Plot" section is totally unreferenced, so this might want sorting, and it also has some stubby sentences that may want merging.

I won't say any more - that'll be for the GA reviewer to do. :) Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 10:14, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Reviewer: SL93 (talk · contribs) 02:48, 5 August 2013 (UTC) Awkward phrasing -Reply

  • "On his arrival, he is forced by his parents and younger sisters into seeing Nisha (Kajal Aggarwal), a girl of their choice for their son to get married to." - I suggest "On his arrival, his parents and younger sisters force him to see Nisha (Kajal Aggarwal), who they chose for him to be married to".
  • "At the bride-viewing ceremony, Jagdish makes up excuses to avoid marrying her, such as commenting that she is old-fashioned." I suggest "At the bride-viewing ceremony, Jagdish makes up excuses to avoid marrying her, which includes commenting about her being old-fashioned".
  • "On the contrary, Nisha turns out to be a college-level boxer who is completely modern in outlook." I suggest "On the contrary, Nisha is a college-level boxer, who is completely modern in her outlook".
  • "He captures the man, who planted the bomb in that bus and soon finds out that he is a mere executor (a sleeper cell) whose only role was to plant the bomb and that the Islamic terrorist group Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (which the bomber belongs to) has planned various such attacks in the city in a couple of days." I suggest "He captures the man, who planted the bomb in that bus, and soon finds out that he is a mere executor, a sleeper cell, whose only role was to plant the bomb. He also discovers that the Islamic terrorist group Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islam, which the bomber belongs to, has planned various such attacks in the city in a couple of days." It is not good to have such a long sentence.
  • When the leader of the terrorist group (Vidyut Jamwal) finds out about the role of Jagdish in the failure of the terrorist attack, he begins to target the families of the army men (except Jagdish), kidnapping someone close to them." I suggest "When the leader of the terrorist group (Vidyut Jamwal) finds out about the role of Jagdish in the failure of the terrorist attack, he begins to target the families of the army men, except Jagdish, by kidnapping someone close to them."
  • The sentence with "(who was about to be killed after Jagdish's bluff was exposed)" should be ", who was about to be killed after Jagdish's bluff was exposed,..."
  • "With this attack too failed, the terrorist leader decides to target Jagdish himself." should be "When this attack fails, the terrorist leader decides to target Jagdish himself."
  • I don't understand what "He asks Jagdish to surrender to him, failing which there would be more terrorist attacks." means.

That was only the plot section, and there are too many other issues throughout the article for this to be anything other than a quick-fail. It would be beneficial to ask someone from Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors to copy edit the article. SL93 (talk) 02:48, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Legacy section

edit

In this edit I boldly deleted the Legacy section, the content of which seems to have been recently added here. Not one of the sources in that section makes the claim that the film popularised the term "sleeper cell", and even if the sources did make that assertion, it's a dubious claim. The term has been in use for decades and the most significant spike in usage occurred around 2001 after the US's 9/11 attacks, according to dictionary.com Looking at Google Trends, there appears to be very little usage worldwide around the time of the film's release, (unfortunately it doesn't track stuff prior to 2004) and looking at Google Ngram viewer, the term was on a decline worldwide with no spikes in 2012. If what the contributor meant was that there was an increase in popularity in India, looking at trends in India, there was a burst of popularity around the time of the film's release, but there were also bursts in 2007, 2008, and 2009. In my mind, upticks in phrase popularity doesn't necessarily equate to "popularised". Popularised suggests that a term was coined and spread widely, or that an obscure term was used and launched into wide usage, which seems to have been the case after 9/11. So, I don't think it's accurate to say that the film popularised the term "sleeper cell".

And, the statement, in 2018, director Ramana Madhesh stated, "My film Arasangam, dealt with sleeper cells, four years before the release of Thuppakki. But, I failed to coin a name for the concept seem to suggest that we're attributing the concept of "sleeper cell" to either Murugadoss or to Madhesh for his 2008 film, which again is dubious, since the term was in the lexicon at either point, and the notion of a clandestine group lying in wait is not anything that someone in the 21st century could claim to have invented. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:05, 21 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
