Merge simple vow

edit

I propose that Simple vow be merged into Solemn vow. It's currently a stub that basically says "a simple vow is a vow that's not a solemn vow. For more information see solemn vow". A separate article adds nothing. The only question is whether the merged article should be renamed to something like Solemn vows and simple vows to make clear that it discusses both. jnestorius(talk) 21:50, 17 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I would suggest keeping the name of the article and simply doing a redirect to it for "simple vow", since the term arose to make the distinction of what a solemn vow is. Jzsj (talk) 22:21, 28 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

A failure of understanding

edit

Reading this entry, it is apparent to me that the brave editors have collectively failed to grasp the essential distinction between simple and solemn vows. This probably mirrors the degradation of public understanding of religious practice, resulting in haphazard referencing and a compounded confusion before even reaching for the historic niceties posed by past churchmen. I consider the current definition somewhat problematic because, on the one hand, it mixes statements and sources about admission to profession (for which there are at least five requirements that must be met) with general statements and differences between oath and vow (regardless of their content) and the definition of a solemn vow.

The requirements for someone to be admitted to first profession are

  1. the person who is to make it has completed at least eighteen years of age
  2. the novitiate has been validly completed*
  3. admission has been given freely by the competent superior with the vote of the council according to the norm of law
  4. the profession is expressed and made without force, grave fear, or malice
  5. the profession is received by a legitimate superior personally or through another

In my opinion, this has nothing to do with whether vows are solemn or not. --Medusahead (talk) 10:06, 4 July 2024 (UTC) PS: I suggest to make a redirect to religious vows where both simple and solemn vows are mentioned.--Medusahead (talk) 10:20, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
