Vandalism Problem
editGood day! Please change this page from having no protection into a page which has semi-protection. There a lot of users who vandalized this page. Unsourced information about the return or a debut of a country to addition of candidates who are not yet confirmed that will join Miss Universe. It is like a pandemonium in this page since there are a lot of "trolls" ruining the validity of this page. Allyriana000 (talk) 01:24, 19 February 2022 (UTC)
- The page has had extended confirmed protection since October 2021. The tag putting the lock icon on the page was accidentally removed, but I restored it just now. ☆ Bri (talk) 20:23, 20 September 2022 (UTC) I am not an administrator
WP:COMMONNAME policy
editSome editors always switch "South Korea" with "Korea". Administrators are trying to revert the changes but it keeps swapping and swapping. This should be considered as vandalism, for breaking the WP:COMMONNAME rule. This can also happen on Slovakia candidates, when editors put Slovak Republic instead of the given name. And also for United States, which they added USA. For the last time, if some of you editors change these name which you always do every time, I will report this issue to admins and block you for violating against Wikipedia's rules, including vandalizing, which is considered as. So please, if one of you are reading this, please understand and stop changing country names into sash names. We hope you all listened. Thank you. - Upcoming pageants sources
- Some editors are adding countries with its pageant dates, which they are adding are completely untrue, but not all of you editors. They are also adding sources that is not related to the upcoming pageant, or just some that are about their previous pageants. I'm just saying that they are adding things which the source aren't even reliable. Not for me, I added the countries with more reliable sources, like Albania, Kosovo, and Guatemala. So please, if you are adding countries with upcoming pageant dates, please add sources, a reliable one. Because if you don't, then this will be considered as vandalism, in my thoughts. Sourcing is more important than adding a content if you wish to. Thank you. LikeRealTimes I got you a message!📩 05:39, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
- @LikeRealTimes, I'm having that issue with Germany right now, someone keeps adding a reference for their alleged coronation on July 2 but it leads me to a post to their casting calls when the post says nothing about it at all. Milesq (talk) 03:09, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Milesq, as I thought, they always add content with completely unrelated references. I also experienced this while editing in Miss Supranational 2022, where some editor swapped sources from France to Philippines and making up titles of the webpage. Good thing I reverted the edit. We need to take action from this "reference clickbaiting" in this article. Good day. LikeRealTimes I got you a message!📩 12:07, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
- @LikeRealTimes another problem with the references is that some editors are adding dates because of the reason that "he said, she said" stuff. It's clearly not reliable and not up to WP:V standards. If anything there must be a post about it from the org itself at least, not form some random bloggers. Milesq (talk) 12:08, 3 June 2022 (UTC)

References issue
editHello, I have been noticing that some Wikipedia editors have still been persistent on adding Instagram blog posts as a reference; whereas it should only be done when it's the only source available and also must be from a primary source (from the organizations itself).
Please refrain from adding posts from these ff. pageant bloggers as references:
They are not reliable sources, as they are bloggers. And by consensus on WP:V standards, they should not be used. Milesq (talk) 05:05, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

This is the proper alphabetical order of countries according to Britannica.com. Please take note of where The Bahamas and South Korea are placed in alphabetical order. Order of the countries (The Bahamas, South Korea)
editThis needs discussing before it turns into a slow edit war. I think "The Bahamas" should be located at B as if it's called "Bahamas, The", and the same goes to "South Korea" at K as if it's "Korea, South" per List of sovereign states. Also, the contest there is called Miss Queen Korea. ~~ lol1VNIO (I made a mistake? talk to me) 09:51, 21 September 2022 (UTC); edited 22:03, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Lol1VNIO: We can agree with that. But the problem is, there are users that do not even care and keep reverting the order. And if you recommend changing the names of these two into the names you mentioned from the list of sovereign states "i.e. Bahamas, The and Korea, South" (if you recommend), it will be pointless on what to really call those countries (FYI, this sentence is just a prediction). Thanks! LikeRealTimes I got you a message!📩 10:04, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- Here's a sample:
Country/Territory Delegate Age[a] Hometown Bahamas, The Angel Cartwright[1] 27 Long Island Korea, South Hanna Kim[2] 26 Seoul
- Finally seeing this discussion, I don't think a single article (Britannica.com) should be the sole basis on what the alphabetical order of sovereign states. Firstly, WP:COMMONAME is the reason why it is stated as South Korea and not Korea, and if that's to be followed, South Korea should be grouped under 'S'. Doing so as "Korea, South" would make the application of the rule pointless. While I do agree that the Bahamas should stay at 'B' (as "the" should not even be taken into alphabetical consideration} South Korea should stay in 'S'. Yes, the name of the country is Korea and so is the national contest but still, use the common name. Going back, various sites list South Korea under 'S' and not under 'K'. Even the country's article name is South Korea, and other international rankings here in Wikipedia more often list it as "South Korea" and not "Korea, South".
- To further prove my point, here are some sites that list South Korea under 'S':

- [2]https://www.state.gov/

- @Milesq: Just to clarify, I want the country to be referred to as "South Korea" (WP:COMMONNAME) but listed like it's called "Korea, South" (like this). Skipping articles on International rankings that aren't sorted alphabetically, I've found [1][2][3][4][5][6] out of 10 that puts the country at K. This may or may not need a bigger discussion for standardization. The US State Department seems to also have the same issue of how and where to list SK, see [3][4][5][6]. ~~ lol1VNIO (I made a mistake? talk to me) 22:00, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

- @Jesteron27: List of sovereign states lists South Korea as "Korea, South". ~~ lol1VNIO (I made a mistake? talk to me) 10:33, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
- It's still common sense to call that country South Korea. Even the UN recognizes it as South Korea. Search it on Google to find South Korea. Even if it is still listed as Korea, South, it does not change the fact that you can't place it under letter K because it still states "South Korea". Whereas if it is named "Korea" and it is linked to "South Korea", you may do so. But as per WP:COMMONNAME, South Korea remains under S and as it should be. It is the ruling and thus it shall be the ONE ONLY APPLIED HERE.
- Try searching for "Korea, South" like anywhere, "South Korea" would still appear. Even as an article here in Wikipedia South Korea. Do you see an article here in Wikipedia that says "Korea, South" because naming it like that is a bit of a stretch considering that the common name only refers to it as either "Republic of Korea"(official name) or "South Korea" (common name).
- Besides, I'm not the only one who believes that South Korea goes under "S", not "K". Jesteron27 (talk) 01:00, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Jesteron27 I'm pretty sure it's been agreed here that The Bahamas stays at "B". So please explain why did you move it to "T"? Milesq (talk) 14:48, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
- My opinion: The Bahamas should be listed in B, South Korea should be listed in S. I do not like the "Korea, South" formatting, it is overcomplicating what should be a simple thing. The contest being called Miss Korea is also irrelevant in my view, given the American contest is called Miss USA, but we do not refer to it as the USA. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 17:06, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

- Since the organization uses her professional name, I think it'd be better if that's what's reflected in the article. Milesq (talk) 14:28, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- The organization uses her professional name, so I do not believe her birth name is relevant. If she becomes notable enough to receive her own article, then her birth name can be mentioned there, but at this point her common name is Kate Alexeeva. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 14:44, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
93 contestants competing
editIn the gray box it should say 93 and Belarus, Brunei, and UAE’s names should be on the debut part. Also in “Selection of Participants” Until should be removed and say 93 72.79.26.151 (talk) 19:10, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
Is it confirmed to be 93?
There ain't any confirmations on Belarus, Brunei, and UAE joining, so that's why everytime they're added, it will get removed. Also, to clarify to those who do those edits, that instagram or any pages that does not contain "Miss Universe" or the national title thereof, should not be regarded as references. References, or reliable ones, include local and international news articles specifically. Jesteron27 (talk) 07:51, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
MOS:OVERLINK does not apply?
editJesteron27 I don't understand your edit summary. Can you elaborate? Why should the article be exempt from the guideline MOS:OVERLINK that plainly states countries should not typically be linked? Not only are commonly known countries linked once, which is already violating the guideline, following your last edit, for instance, United States is linked twice and Indonesia is linked three times. ☆ Bri (talk) 17:02, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
- Of course MOS:OVERLINK applies here. The fact that other articles do not follow it is not a justification to ignore it, those articles should be fixed too. MB 18:45, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
The fact that there are hundreds of articles violating this is beyond me. It could've been better that they followed MOS:OVERLINK before publishing the articles in the first place. Doing this (for the first time here, at this article) is beyond me as well. Why now? Why not when Miss Universe 2021 or Miss International 2019 or Miss Grand International 2022 or even Miss Earth 2021 articles were created? Did you just notice those violations now? How about when their pageants were inaugurated? Does that constitute as well? Does it offer relevance to them too? If it does, then fix it. I am just doing what most beauty pageants are doing, especially international ones. They have been here in Wikipedia longer than you've imagined. If the rule was there before, then why brought up this issue now, not before? I never said that it should be exempted, all I'm saying is that other beauty pageant articles do it too, for a very long time as well. Why just now, not before?
You just stumbled upon it recently and immediately thought, oh these articles are violating this, therefore I should be doing something about it. That's good. But when there are lots and lots and lots of articles doing this. Could you be doing the same for others too?
Jesteron27 (talk) 08:40, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
- For the record, it doesn't matter as far as policy-based arguments are concerned, but at the same time I was removing links here, I did make similar cleanups at Miss Earth 2022 and Miss World 2022. Better to start somewhere, I reckon, and where people are actively editing makes sense to me. Maybe we can start to go forward with better editing instead of piling up even more poor quality articles. ☆ Bri (talk) 01:36, 15 November 2022 (UTC)

Turkey or Türkiye?
editAs we have seen, from this edition onwards, Turkey's sash has been changed to Türkiye. But doesn't this violate WP:COMMONNAME standards? Even in the country's article talkpage, it's been agreed that Turkey shall still be used in Wikipedia in adherence to WP:COMMONNAME, WP:RS, and WP:CRYSTAL for the moment.
With that in state, shouldn't those standards be applied to this article as well, not until Türkiye gets more commonly used over time than Turkey? Good day. Milesq (talk) 14:17, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- The country should be called Turkey per WP:COMMONNAME. It doesn't matter what the sash says, we have the same practice regarding the usage of a USA sash rather than United States. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 14:42, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

Ida Hauan, Miss Norway
editGood day! I just wanted to ask for a consensus if Ida Hauan, Miss Norway should be really added at the Contestants table? User @C.b.w85 has been adding Hauan at the table since May. My argument as to why she shouldn't be added is because Hauan withdrew from the pageant, and the table is solely for the contestants who are still in the competition until the end; aside from it being unsourced and unreferenced. This is the same case with Jewel Selver, Miss Turks and Caicos 2009 who even appeared at the parade of nations but was considered a withdrawn contestant and is not at the Contestants table for Miss Universe 2009, and Miss Iceland 2003 Manuela Ósk Harðardóttir although she did not finished the preliminaries due to dehydration. It is very simple and not complex in my opinion, if you withdrew, you're not a contestant anymore despite competing at the preliminaries.
I wish to have a proper discussion on this page so that we could avoid ending up with an edit war. Thank you! Allyriana000 (talk) 00:31, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
