Questioning the Removal of Companies from this List

edit

Hello all,

Let me make clear, I have a COI; I work for a company which has been removed from this list.

It appears this list has been repeatedly edited in the past, with companies being regularly removed from this list. While I am not excessively experienced with Wikipedia, I have reviewed the guidelines regarding such lists, and further reviewed other similar lists, and found that this list has been being treated unusually.

I'd like to cite Wikipedia's guidelines in a few notable places in regards to lists, and external links. Guidance from an experienced editor would be appreciated. This type of list should be all-inclusive as there are no guidelines set out determining what makes a company qualify for the list or not.

Advertising, marketing or public relations. Information about companies and products must be written in an objective and unbiased style, free of puffery. All article topics must be verifiable with independent, third-party sources, so articles about very small garage bands or local companies are typically unacceptable. Wikipedia articles about a person, company or organization are not an extension of their website, press releases, or other social media marketing efforts. External links to commercial organizations are acceptable if they identify notable organizations which are the topic of the article. Wikipedia neither endorses organizations nor runs affiliate programs. See also Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) for guidelines on corporate notability. Those promoting causes or events, or issuing public service announcements, even if noncommercial, should use a forum other than Wikipedia to do so. Contributors must disclose any payments they receive for editing Wikipedia. See also Wikipedia:Conflict of interest.

Lists of companies and organizations - A company or organization may be included in a list of companies or organizations whether or not it meets the Wikipedia notability requirement, unless a given list specifically requires this. If the company or organization does not have an existing article in Wikipedia, a citation to an independent, reliable source should be provided to establish its membership in the list's group.

Following the guidance of these 2 rules as outlined by Wikipedia, I see no reason why legitimate companies are being removed from this list. Nothing in Wikipedia guidelines necessitates that a company have a Wiki article to be referenced/linked in this context - yet that seems to be the basis for the removal of most companies. Similar lists commonly have externally linked websites/companies in very similar contexts as well.

Per these guidelines, any legitimate data recovery company should be listed here. The question is how to properly add companies to the list. Obviously, each company cannot create it's own Wiki article, that would be a huge COI issue. Should companies be added with no links at all? Links to neutral sources, such as a review article? Or links to their websites? (Most similar lists I've seen directly link company websites when no article is found) Davoguha (talk) 17:12, 22 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Please read WP:SOURCELIST and WP:NLIST. Either all the listed entries have to be notable (each is in a standalone article) or the subject of topic has to be notable. This is why your edits keep getting reverted. (I am not watching this page, so please ping me if you want my attention.) Chris Troutman (talk) 21:04, 3 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
