Tales from Earthsea

edit

This section gives very few sources, listing only among the most minor of the film's critical achievements, and focusing on the Bunshun Raspberry Award - which is itself a group of 32 film critics, which have a particular bias regarding anime movies. I strongly suggest the original article from them being cited and properly translated, and a more balanced look at the movie's critical reception replace the present state of this section. I see that someone added sources to the section and included positive critical reaction. I also added the film's Rottentomatoes and Metacritic scores to give the big picture on critical reception. Safe to remove the neutrality tag? Blondepianist (talk) 19:49, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Looks good to me now, balanced much better now than before. Going to remove the disputed tag. ScientificBuccaneer (talk) 05:22, 29 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Gorō MiyazakiGoro Miyazaki – Considering the guidelines at WP:SPNC, which state that "For minor spelling variations (capitalization, diacritics, punctuation and spacing after initials, etc.): when a consistent and unambiguous self-published version exists, it is usually followed", and those for modern Japanese names, which state that, if no "most commonly used name" can be established, "Use the form personally or professionally used by the person, if available in the English/Latin alphabet", I believe the title of this article should be "Goro Miyazaki", without a macron.

Professional press articles are split between romanizing the name as Gorō, Gorô, or Goro. As there is a lack of consensus between them, then, following the guidelines I linked to above, we should refer to what the person themselves appears to prefer.

Although Studio Ghibli's own site does not give Roman names for its staff (at least, I haven't seen any on it), official media closely related to the studio predominantly uses "Goro" without any macron or circumflex, including the Japanese site for Earwig and the Witch (see "GORO" near the top of the page) and Wild Bunch's web pages, posters and press kits for Earthsea, Poppy Hill, and Earwig (the French poster for the last of those uses Gorō, but the English-language web page and press kit use Goro).

The official Northern American site for Studio Ghibli, run for Ghibli by their NA distributor, GKIDS, uses Goro.

Goro is also used on all the covers of the US and UK disc releases of his works that I've found:

"Hayao Miyazaki's father"

edit

@TechnoSquirrel69: Two aspects to address, neutrality and qualifying notability. (1) I don't think it's neutral because you wouldn't expect Hayao Miyazaki's article to open with "he's the father of Goro Miyazaki". It's a true statement, but it's not balanced presentation of the facts. I saw a similar issue with article for Elisabeth Murdoch opening with "her father is Rupert Murdoch", which is especially problematic given that's a common problem with articles about women. (2) It does not qualify notability; Miyazaki is an accomplished animation director and has designed and managed commercially successful entertainment sites, as covered across reliable independent sources. Doesn't have inclusion here just cause he's son of another famous director. Indeed, there isn't article on Keisuke Miyazaki because of that! Though I suppose the exception to this rule is articles on royalty. JAYFAX (talk) 19:35, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Courtesy link: (diff) Thanks for your message! The main reason I think that information should be in the lead is that, for better or for worse, Wikipedia mirrors the presentation of the subject as discussed in reliable sources. Goro has been widely discussed in comparison to Hayao, sometimes in speculation that he would be Hayao's successor at Ghibli. He's also spent many years of his career working with or for Hayao in some way. I quite understand that Wikipedia should not accidentally give readers the impression that the subject of an article is defined by their notable parent (you might remember my work on Mai Fujisawa, where I actively tried to avoid doing that), but that doesn't mean that it merits complete exclusion from the lead. Also, it doesn't automatically follow that Goro's notability is derived from Hayao's just by the inclusion of that information in the lead. That kind of consideration is normally only an issue for the opening sentence, so its placement further along in the paragraph seems appropriate to me. I'm always willing to discuss alternatives if you disagree, though! TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 22:25, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@TechnoSquirrel69: Welp the presentation of the subject has to be encyclopedic rather than editorial, and the comparison made across sources is more an artifact of human interest than actual professional work. I don't think Goro has really worked with Hayao as much as lead would consequently suggest. Did one film with him, From Up on Poppy Hill, with a screenplay by him. Perhaps could me mentioned inline, "From Up on Poppy Hill (2011), with a screenplay written by his father Hayao Miyazaki, [...]", let me know what you think. JAYFAX (talk) 21:03, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm personally of the opinion that the information really only sticks out due to how short the lead currently is. This isn't necessarily an issue of neutrality through its inclusion, but a symptom of some of the work that needs to be put in to develop the article further. That being said, I don't have an issue with your suggestion either, so I've implemented it. TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 21:27, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
