Merge

edit

As all the title pages (except GM) are basically stubs, I'm suggesting merging them into a single titles page. Possibly it might be worth keeping the International Grandmaster page seperate as it's a lot more detailed, but does anyone have an objection to merging the rest at least? BarryNL (talk) 08:24, 22 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sounds a good idea to me. SyG (talk) 18:03, 23 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think it would be useful to have one article that sumarizes all of them. Bubba73 (talk), 18:42, 23 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Merged - needs tidying

edit

Ok, I merged the stub pages and created redirects. I'll try and get round to improving the article too, unless someone beats me to it. BarryNL (talk) 11:04, 24 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned references in FIDE Titles

edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of FIDE Titles's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "WallFIDEHistory":

  • From FIDE: Wall, W. "FIDE History".
  • From World Chess Championship: Wall,. "FIDE History". Retrieved 2008-09-15.{{cite web}}: CS1 maint: extra punctuation (link)

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 11:40, 24 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Quality of References

edit

Is anyone else a bit concerned that at lot of this article seems to rely on someone's personal geocities webpage for reference? I'm not sure Bill Wall's FIDE History (ref [1] in the current article) should be used. Any objections to removing that reference and putting a 'references needed' tag on the page instead? (I couldn't find other sources to validate the information). BarryNL (talk) 13:38, 7 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Merge maybe not a good idea

edit

At first I was in favor of the merge, but now I'm having second thoughts. I think the merge causes three problems:

1. Loss of InterWiki links to other language wikis. For instance, International Master had

and Woman Grandmaster had

and I'm not certain that there might not be more that are missing from that list. This is completely lost to us now and I don't see how we can get it back. [clarification on 02:46, 3 October 2009 (UTC) - I mean get it back while leaving the pages that were merged as redirects. Those redirect pages can be reverted to their original state to restore them by anyone at any time.]

2. Loss of precise categorization. Woman Grandmaster had Category:Chess woman grandmasters, Category:1977 in chess, and Category:Awards established in 1977. These could be put back into this article, but it wouldn't be very clean. The middle category in that list brings up the final problem I see with the merge,

3. Loss of the primary articles for a few chess categories, specifically Category:Chess International Masters, Category:chess woman International Masters, and Category:Chess woman grandmasters. This perhaps isn't critical as I suppose this article could be put in those cats.

Any thoughts? These problems seem serious enough to me to suggest that we should undo the merge unless we can find a way to lessen the disadvantages of the current merged page. Quale (talk) 06:54, 2 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Probably nothing is permanently lost - an administrator can get it back. Bubba73 (talk), 01:52, 3 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oops, sorry, I worded that very poorly. I meant get it back while keeping the merged pages as redirects. The redirect pages can be restored to their former states by anyone at any time (an admin is not needed to do that). My question is whether we should. I've clarified my meaning with a late edit. Quale (talk) 02:47, 3 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
I think things should be left as they are. The merge was a good idea. There wasn't really enough to warrant separate articles on all the inidividual titles and the page as it's laid out now is good ad sensible. Can the interwikis and categories not just be left on the redirects.? People can still access them if they really want to. The FIDE titles article also links to a lot of other wikis anyway. --Pawnkingthree (talk) 21:48, 3 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

All the topics that merged into this one should have there talk pages redirected here and really the talk contents also, if it's still relevant. SunCreator (talk) 23:16, 4 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
Now that the merge has occurred, I am afraid demerging would be a mess because of the Talk page, no ? SyG (talk) 19:48, 5 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Woman Candidate Master

edit

For every other title, everytime you right it down and put [[ ]], went you click on it it redirect you to this page... But for the Woman Candidate Master ( witch is an official title by the fide organization ) it doesnt redirect you. Please fix this, thank you

Quick Grammar Cleanup

edit

I did a quick grammar cleanup. I think it needs checking to make sure all of the info is still accurate. This article still needs better references. Chrishy 01:41, 22 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Woman Grand Master

edit

WGM title can´t have been etablished in 1977, because Nana Alexandria got title in 1976! SteMicha (talk) 21:16, 10 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

You are right. Twelve players were awarded the WGM title in 1976, as shown by Russian Wikipedia; also living players' FIDE cards confirm 1976. Sophia91 (talk) 02:16, 11 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Is there a reason the WGM title redirects to Grandmaster? It is a little confusing for a title to redirect itself to a title that says the two should not be confused. 2601:2C3:57F:1560:7CE2:4FC1:581B:F054 (talk) 19:53, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

NM - Nation Master?

edit

Is NM a FIDE title, or is it a title given to champions of a national tournament, regardless of FIDE? Jørgen88 (talk) 22:22, 14 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm pretty sure that it isn't a FIDE title. It is probably given based on performance in their own country. For instance, a rating of 2400 in the US Chess Federation rating system makes you a master, and that is probably what is meant by national master. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 23:54, 14 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Correct. Different countries will have different criteria. For example for England it is here . So the titles might not be comparable between countries - SimonLyall (talk) 04:48, 15 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Candidate Master

edit

The article claims the CM title was introduced in 2002. I have a copy of the FIDE rules of chess from 1997, which acknowledged the CM title already existing back then. The famous Alex Dunne book "How to become a Candidate Master" was first published in 1985. Can the correct date, this title was introduced, please be clarified? Thanks.Greg Holden 08 (talk) 03:18, 18 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Many national federations had (and probably still have) their own "Candidate Master" title before it was introduced by FIDE. The equivalent USCF title is "Expert" so that's a surprising book title by Alex Dunne. MaxBrowne (talk) 03:32, 18 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Arena titles are not up to date

edit

I found a few legacy sites with the Arena stats matching the ones in the article, but they are not broken down by gender. The figures are from March 2019 and are no doubt out of date. Where did the breakdown by gender come from? Because I can't find it here, and a player's gender is not always obvious from their name. MaxBrowne2 (talk) 06:37, 7 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Not going to revert but....

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=FIDE_titles&type=revision&diff=1029184151&oldid=1028728117

Objectively this edit is neither good nor bad, but it seems to be motivated by partisanship. I would like to see this kind of thing avoided in Wikiproject chess. MaxBrowne2 (talk) 12:53, 18 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Women's titles

edit

The article says that the WCM, WFM, WIM and WGM are exclusive to women. Is that accurate? The FIDE Handbook chapter on title regulations mentions no such restriction as far as I can see, and the Title Application Form does not ask about gender. --JBritnell (talk) 13:52, 21 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Women’s titles

edit

I feel like it should list some descriptions of women’s titles for people who do not know what they are 65.186.74.204 (talk) 22:25, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

"In chess history"

edit

We don't need this. It's redundant, my English teachers always used to mark me down for "useless words", and it's hyperbolic. Keep it clear, concise and encyclopedic. Besides the FM title has only existed since 1978, and many players who qualify for it don't bother applying, considering it a bit of a "non-title" and a FIDE money grab.
