Lapal vs Lappal
editThe modern spelling has one p. That is the place name on current maps, and also of the Lapal Canal Trust. If the spelling Lappal is preferred in the canal world, please comment. :) Oosoom Talk to me 09:52, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
- I am also aware of the conundrum. As you point out the place, Lapel, has one p and that occurs in both the one-inch map of Great Britain, Sheet 131, revised 1958-59, the 1:50000 First Series, revised 1972, as well as more recent OS Maps. I've always known the tunnel spell with two ps; and that convention was used by Charles Hatfield in Canals of the West Midlands, 1966. There is no reason why the tunnel and the place cannot have different spellings. All the references in this Dudley Canal article were to Lappal Tunnel, but a stub Lapal Tunnel has been recently created and the references changed to Lapal Tunnel. The way around the difficulty is to keep the present Lapal Tunnel article and to create a Redirect page Lappal Tunnel for those of use that expect to find it spelt with two ps. Mapping details
editDoes anyone know what the line from Tipton Jn over the Netherton Tunnel Branch is called? Also, I am not sure about the branch labelled Pensnett. My maps show if on that side, but the mention of the Grazebrook Arm leaving to the south east would seem to point to a different name and the opposite side of the canal. Help needed, please. Bob1960evens 21:26, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
- There is a minor problem with the map: The two Dudley tunnels are not on the same contour. Dudley Tunnel is on the 473 ft level and that is what goes over the top of the Netherton Tunnel Branch. Netherton Tunnel is on the 453 ft level. See pages 66 & 67 of Hadfield (1966), Canals of the West Midlands, 1st ed. There are two branches at Parkhead: Grazebrook arm is on the east and Pensnett on the west, above the locks. (see Hadfield, page 254).Pyrotec 13:03, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
- Corrections done. I think it is correct now.Pyrotec 19:40, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
Assessment
edit- Suitably referenced, with inline citations
- Reasonable coverage - no obvious omissions or inaccuracies
- Defined structure, with adequate lead
- Reasonably well written for grammer and flow
- Supporting materials - Infobox, map, images, POI table
- Appropriately understandable
Based on these criteria, I am rating this B. Bob1960evens (talk) 17:06, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

Photo
editI wince every time see this very old photo, featuring dumped furniture and someone walking out of shot. The walkable section actually continues a further kilometre south and there is a good photo available on Geograph that well illustrates the current state of the southern end of the canal. I don't have any experience of using Geograph pics and I couldn't find this file already existing on Commons, though it is licensed for reuse under CC. Does someone know how to do this please?
