Origin of backwards R
editAnyone know the origin of the backwards R?? Georgia guy 00:50, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
- Because he was mental.--Steven X 07:05, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
- Well, an important note is that the character in ChaЯly looks like, but is not, a backwards R. It is the Cyrillic letter Ya. I suggest we remove this word; all that spelling is is "Chayaly" with a mixture of Latin and Cyrillic characters. Any objections?? Georgia guy 13:45, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- Are you serious? What is your source that the character is not simply a childlike attempt at the letter "R"? (JosephASpadaro 06:33, 12 May 2007 (UTC))
- What is meant here is that the use of the Я character is incorrect, not that the backwards R is not, in fact, a backwards R. I believe what Georgia guy is trying to refer to exactly is this bit of text: An episode of The Simpsons from 2001, entitled "HOMЯ", is a loose parody of Flowers for Algernon and CHAЯLY. 68.107.96.136 06:53, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Differences with book
editFilm articles will frequently have a section for differences between the book version and the film version. IIRC, there were some major differences between this and the original book, maybe such a section should be put in? TJ Spyke 00:05, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
- I have a fervent dislike for such sections since they always seem to end up being just geeky lists. Can you point me to a good example of one that hasn't descended into chaos? Do any featured articles have them?
- Even then, my thinking is that a section should only be added if a reliable source identifying important differences can be found. We don't want to just create a list of differences from our own memories of the film and the book. It's also worth remembering that differences are to be expected since the film was developed from a teleplay which was based on the short story, not the novel. Finally, readers of the article can see the differences themselves be reading the plot section. GDallimore (Talk) 00:27, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
Attempted sexual assault
editI'm changing the article back to the way it was. The people changing either have not seen the film or do not know what sexual assault is. Please discuss here if you want further clarification but, basically, it is essentially impossible to "attempt" to sexually assault someone - you either do or you don't. Attempted rape is probably what the editor is thinking of. Grabbing someone and throwing them to the ground is assault. Kissing them makes it sexual. Full stop. No argument. GDallimore (Talk) 12:28, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- Changing it to attempted rape is also inappropriate, since we do not know the Charly's actual intentions. All we can relate in the plot section without a reliable source interpreting the scene is what actually, visibly happens: sexual assault. Anything else is WP:Original research. Charly was [not] entered into competition
editI removed the following:
- Charly was entered into competition at the 18th Berlin International Film Festival.
Because Charly is not listed at http://www.berlinale.de/en/archiv/jahresarchive/1968/02_programm_1968/02_Programm_1968.html
Spelling inconsistencies
editWhy are there spelling inconsistencies in this article between "Charly" and "Charlie"? Is there perhaps some rationale for using these spellings interchangeably, generally, in English?
In the 1968 movie, his name was apparently spelled "Charly" (this is the spelling used in the captions, and the IMDb entry spells his name "Charly" in the cast listing and throughout the storyline), yet this WP article uses the spelling "Charlie". I'm not very familiar with any of the forms of this story, so I'm not about to make any edits based on guesses (different forms might use different spellings). Does someone actually know? Does his name appear in print in the movie, outside of the titles? David Spector (user/talk) 01:20, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
I found a discussion of the name change (and other interesting information) in Turner Classic Movies, which is usually reliable. Please, someone more confident than I, make the edits. David Spector (user/talk) 01:29, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
