Austin fest
editIMDb [1] lists a "jury prize" from the Austin Fantastic Fest in 2003. (Same info repeated at AcesShowBiz, and that link is blacklisted here.) However, the first Fest was in 2005. The blog on the fantasticfest.com site, for instance, notes that Feast (film) was shown at the first Fest [2]. Moral: take info on the web with some degree of skepticism. Latest edits
editI've removed a lot of recent editing. I'm not sure I trust some of the awards ("best hairstyle"?) and their sites (freewebs?). Some of the new sources didn't seem to add anything, and seemed to be low quality. Regarding content, an independent reliable source refers to the Wu movie as her first starring role, so we have tried for years to avoid calling earlier roles "starring" or "breakthrough". Lastly, the structure of the lead grouped items thematically and temporally, listing major roles (recurring, or award-winning) rather than insignificant one-off guest roles. Thus, the mention of the YAA in the lead. Gimmetoo (talk) 15:57, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
AXA 2006
editUnbelievable that there is even a dispute about this. The source someone claimed says Song "won" is [3]. The url "blog.scholastic.com" is prima facie a blog, which makes its reliability suspect. But even if considered reliable, it doesn't actually say she won, nor mention a specific award. The mention is part of a Q/A where the Q says: "You have received the Asian Excellence Award. Do you feel a responsibility towards the Asian-American community?". In the entertainment industry, being nominated is an award, too. Any source, and especially one requiring interpretation, needs to be correlated with other sources. Editors should be capable of looking up who actually won the 2006 AXA "Newcomer's" award, and finding out it's not Song. Thus, even if this source directly said she won (which it doesn't), it would be wrong. The website we take as Song's official site has an April 2010 press release [4] referring to an "Asian excellence award nomination". Gimmetoo (talk) 14:39, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
- The only thing that I find mysterious about this is that I can't find a single reliable source showing who actually won. It seems to be Lynn Chen, but the only site I can find supporting that is Chen's personal website. I agree that "nominated" is the best thing to say, but it isn't quite as obvious as you make it out to be.—Kww(talk) 16:11, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
- My searches came up with [5] rather quickly. Gimmetoo (talk) 16:26, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
- Don't see how I missed that one. Think it would be reasonable to use as a reference on the "nominated" status?—Kww(talk) 16:33, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
- There is a link to official PR listing nominees. I don't see why this article needs anything additional for a "non-win". Gimmetoo (talk) 17:08, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Actress AND Singer
editBrenda Song is also a singer. She sang in the Disney Channel Star production of "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes".--Disney09 (talk) 22:14, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Award tables
edit[6] The table here lists only individual awards. Film or cast awards, such as those for Suite Life or Requiem, are discussed in the text but not included in the table. The same form is used in the featured articles for Angelina Jolie and Emma Watson. Apparently excluding cast or film awards is considered "plain abuse" [7] to a new editor. What is the argument for including cast or film awards? Gimmetoo (talk) 13:39, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
Waverly Place 2010
edit[8] [9]. At this point, the episode "Alex Gives Up" has not aired. I am unable to find where Disney or another reliable source has announced Song as a guest star, and even the major non-reliable sources don't list it. So at this point, it shouldn't be in the article. Once the episode airs, if this info should be included, it would still be a guest appearance, and not go under television. Gimmetoo (talk) 22:14, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
Dating

Awards and Nominations
editYear: 2008
Award: Nickelodeon Australian Kids' Choice Awards 2008
Category: Fave International TV Stars
Motive: The Suite Life of Zack & Cody
Result: Nominated

- That's no longer in that Wiki article; that's one of the reqasons wiki has a policy against using other wiki articles as references. I couldn't easily find any list of nominees for that particular award - at least, none that weren't likely derivative of wikipedia. So the nomination might be correct, but I don't see a way to verify it. Gimmetrow 17:18, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

"Hmong" in lede?
editAn IP editor or two continually adds "Hmong" to "Brenda Song is an American actress..." in the lede: [10], [11], [12]. I've reverted the first two ([13], [14]); the first revert making clear the basis in my edit summary ("MOS:BLPLEAD: 'Ethnicity, religion, or sexuality should generally not be in the lead unless it is relevant to the subject's notability.'"), and in each case leaving a comment on the IP user's talk page; but he or she keeps being re-added without explanation.
I'm loath to remove it again; I don't think such a third reversion would be within any of the 3RR exceptions; it's not obvious vandalism for no. 4, nor is it libelous, biased, unsourced, or poorly sourced for no. 7.
So I ask here: is there any reason that "Hmong" should be in the lead, because either (a) the Hmong ethnicity is relevant to Song's notability; or (b) there's some reason why this article should not comply with Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biographies? TJRC (talk) 20:34, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

Rumors has it...In Asian culture..
editI suggest deleting the following lines:
1. "Rumors has it that she even denied her roots leading to some blacklash within her community." "Rumor has it" is not an acceptable citation of source material.
2. Also, the phrase "In Asian culture, to deny one's root is to forsaken ones parents or loved ones and culture." First, what's Asian about that? Second, there are about 80 countries and 1000s of cultures in Asia, which one is meant? Third, this is all in response to a statement that is just a rumor.
