german surname?

I looked in google books, and it looks like a English/Norsen surname:

• "A dictionary of English and Welsh surnames" says that it means "the son of Brand" and that it went out of use before the XIII century (p. 129).
• "A World of Baby Names" says it's a variation of "Brant", which derives "from the Old English brand (firebrand, sword) and the Norsen brandr (firebrand, sword)" (p. 30).
• "A dictionary of English surnames" lists the variations Beand, Brandt, Brant, Braund, Brauns, Bront, says that it means "fireband, sword. Found also in Norway" (p. 61).

For the germanic origin, I can only find non-reliable websites[1][2].

Please kindly provide sources for the germanic origin instead of trying to edit war the "german surname" category into the article. --Enric Naval (talk) 23:19, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
