Year of death uncertain

edit

Some sources say 1162, others 1163. Dougweller (talk) 09:26, 18 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

We should make a list here...I thought it was pretty well established that he died in 1163. To give one relevant recent work, Malcolm Barber's The Crusader States gives February 10, 1163. Adam Bishop (talk) 10:41, 3 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
All the best recent sources in English (Barber, Riley-Smith, Hamilton, etc), French (Richard), and German (Mayer) seem to give February 10, 1163 as the date. Actually all the good French sources going back to the 19th century agree on 1163, Mas Latrie for example. There are some sources that give 1162, but they are all rather old (Runciman, Stevenson, etc). I'm sure the discrepancy comes from William of Tyre. It's possible that he is using a calendar that starts in March (or later), so February 1163 is still 1162 for him, but from what I know of William and his system of dating, that is not the case at all, it is simply that he was astoundingly bad at giving correct dates even for events he witnessed personally. The date is certainly 1163. Adam Bishop (talk) 09:14, 8 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
