Failure to maintain

edit

The portal currently fails to meet the required standards of the Featured portal criteria, in particular 1(d) (well-maintained). "Featured portals that require maintenance and are not updated for three or more months are summarily demoted." I see the following problems:

  1. The "selected picture" for September is a redlink, as it was in August, July and June
  2. The "selected article" has been Initiative since October 2008
  3. The "selected biography" has been Geert Wilders since November 2009
  4. The "selected quote" has been one of Wilders' utterances (remarkable variety in the portal, don't you think?) since December 2009

I will leave messages at the portal's associated WikiProjects and see whether there are any improvements quickly, otherwise a visit to Featured Portal Review looms... It would probably be a good idea to have a look at some of the recent Featured Portals to see how to use a system of random subpages so that manual or monthly updates are no longer necessary. Lack of Consistency with Democracy

edit

The Democracy page notes several forms of Democracy, yet almost non of those are noted sub lists of Democracy on the list of Governments bar on the side (linking to the politics portal). To me, it seems that this lack of congruence could be problematic. Sovereignlance (talk) 05:57, 18 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

750th anniversary of De Montfort's Parliament

edit

20th January 2015 is the 750th anniversary of the first English Parliament.[1] However the article De Montfort's Parliament is not eligible for Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/January 20 because it's tagged with refimprove. Would anyone be able to help clean this up?

The BBC [2] are planning a "Democracy Day" of live events, discussions and debate, produced in partnership with the Speaker’s Office of the House of Commons, including broadcasts from inside Westminster. Whizz40 (talk) 09:30, 21 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

The article is being improved and is selected for the January 20th anniversary. Whizz40 (talk) 20:56, 14 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

List of political parties by region - far too specific

edit

Hello, I have noticed that the list of political parties has been divided into continents and even more arbitrary regions of continents. The problem is that ll the sata can fit on one page which would also allow comparing political systems, unlike it is now. Can someone delete this pages and collate them, please? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.144.220.183 (talk) 17:17, 30 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Adding media commentary to BLPs of politicians

edit

Please see the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Biographies of living persons#Adding media commentary to BLPs of politicians. I have asked for guidance on how much media commentary should be added to the pages of politicians, noting that it varies widely. Please discuss there. Portal:PoliticsPortal:Government and politicsPortal:Government already redirects here, but government and politics are not identical concepts. There are many aspects of government which are, at least ideally, non-political. Changing the portal name would make it clear that all aspects of both areas fall within the coverage of this portal. bd2412 T 03:50, 5 September 2019 (UTC)--Relisted. – Ammarpad (talk) 13:43, 14 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Bolding on legislative election templates

edit

I've noticed that @Thiscouldbeauser: is bolding the party placed first on the infobox of pretty much every legislatives election pages. Has there ever been a discussion on this? I don't think it's a good idea. It's not like a presidential election with a single winner. In multi members proportional elections, several parties can win, as governements are coalitions ones. And the party arriving first isn't necessarily the winner. It's not unusual for a party that came in second place to ally with one on, say, fourth place and get together the majority of seats, thus relegating the first place party in the opposition. I don't see a plus in bolding anything, and the logic here isn't stable, imo. What do you think? Aréat (talk) 06:59, 29 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Well, I'm in Australia and the last election we had was the 2022 Australian federal election. While Anthony Albanese and the Labor Party (the main centre-left party in Australia) won a majority of seats and therefore he is now Prime Minister, Scott Morrison (the previous Prime Minister) and the Coalition (a coalition of the Liberal Party and the National Party, the two main centre-right parties in Australia) won the majority of first-preference votes. Therefore, the appropriate sections are bolder (I didn't bold these). Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 08:52, 29 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

I think it should be bolder to highlight the winner for either the whole election or first-preference votes. Thiscouldbeauser (talk) 09:41, 29 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

standards for party and state next to name

edit

Is there a MOS or other guideline for how to write a politician's party and state in an article? I always assumed it would be like "Rep. Name (D-NY) or something, but an addition I made recently was changed dramatically. I've been looking for something to use as a reference if a change is necessary, but I can't find it yet. Thanks.
