Born in London, he graduated with a first class degree in English from St Peter's College, Oxford, before completing a PhD in creative writing at the University of East Anglia in 2009.[3]
He has written four novels,[4] including The English German Girl, which won the Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize in 2011.[5]
Under Simons' tenure, The Jewish Chronicle's reporting has been described as becoming increasingly right-wing,[6] sensationalist[7] and pro-Israel.[7][8] Under his tenure in September 2024, the paper was subject to criticism regarding apparently fabricated stories regarding the ongoing war in Gaza by an author who had allegedly fabricated large parts of his CV and little prior work in journalism.[7][9]
