Category talk:Islands in fiction

Scope

I have included Oceania and Caribbean as sub-categories, along with Bermuda, Channel Islands, Corsica, Falkland Islands, Jurassic Park, Malta, Mauritius and Singapore, but not larger islands such as Great Britain, Iceland or Sri Lanka, because I was not sure that being on an island would be a notable part of the fictional setting in such countries. – Fayenatic London 20:31, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

This could be a problematic category, as would its various sub-categories, since where do you draw the line about what constitutes an island e.g Ireland? PatGallacher (talk) 00:57, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

I created it when I noticed that there was no Category:Robinson Crusoe, as I think it's well worth being able to navigate between such pages as Robinson Crusoe, Treasure Island and Cast Away, where the island setting provides a strong connection. I don't intend to define an arbitrary line, and if someone can show that there is also such a connection for fiction set in Ireland, well and good.

For that matter, I would not oppose widening this category to match the geography of the parent Category:Islands if this is necessary on policy grounds. – Fayenatic London 13:02, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

I agree we should use a consistent definition for "islands" (see subcats Category:Novels set on islands and Category:Films set on islands. Since Fayenatic london does not object, I will expand the category. Goustien (talk)
