In feminist philosophy, there is a silent but consistent recurrence of criticisms regarding the m... more In feminist philosophy, there is a silent but consistent recurrence of criticisms regarding the mainstream, “liberal” defense of the right to abortion, most prominently exemplified by Judith Jarvis Thomson’s seminal paper “A Defense of Abortion”. In this paper, I explore the feminist proposals of Alison M. Jaggar (1975) and Sally Markowitz (1990) and examine, in light of these, the prospects of a particularly feminist ethics of abortion. I argue that although feminist theorists are right to say that defenses based on bodily autonomy set the wrong agenda for public discourse, thus contributing to a misleading and uninformed debate, Thomsonian arguments still have considerable advantages, both in philosophy and in the public discourse. In particular, while Thomsonian accounts can successfully sidestep the conflict between the mother’s and the fetus’s rights, currently available feminist proposals can meaningfully transform but cannot eliminate this problem.

Jay Wallace argues that determining the conditions of moral responsibility is an essentially normative project: we are searching for those facts which make holding someone responsible fair. Wallace’s normative interpretation has been contested on two grounds. First, Wallace offers no argument for accepting his view instead of the more common and natural understanding of the issue, which takes facts about responsibility conceptually prior and independent of practices of holding responsible. Second, critics argue that the normative interpretation cannot account for those cases where considerations about the moral appropriateness of blame are independent of the agent’s responsibility. In this paper I first draw the outlines of an argument which could show that the normative interpretation—put forth as a general schema—is the only framework in which we can understand the debate between different theories of responsibility. Then I discuss Angela Smith’s criticism of Wallace and point out how her objections can be handled within the account Wallace proposes. Finally, I briefly discuss the further consequences and merits of the normative interpretation.

A feminista közösség -már ha beszélhetünk ilyenről globális szinten -eltöprengett, hogyan lehetne "újracsomagolni" a feminizmust, és miközben ezen vitatkoztak, észrevétlenül újra is csomagolták: fejnehéz, absztrakt manifesztumok közlése helyett olyan életközeli, friss, provokatív témákat felvető írásokkal jelentkeznek nap mint nap, amelyek finoman, de szisztematikusan szoktatják rá olvasóikat, hogy érzékenyebb megfigyelői és aktívabb ellenzői legyenek a nemek közti társadalmi egyenlőtlenségeknek 1 .

Elaborating on the latter notion in a series of articles Angela Smith developed a unified account of attributonism, the "rational relations view". According to Neil Levy's formulation, "on the attributionist account, I am responsible for my attitudes, and my acts and omissions insofar as they express my attitudes, in all cases in which my attributes express my identity as a practical agent. Attitudes are thus expressive of who I am if they belong to the class of judgment-sensitive attitudes" (Levy 2005).
