It examines Asad’s writings on the nature and role of the sharī‘a, which drew heavily on the work of the medieval Andalusian jurist Ibn Ḥazm (456/1064) and his Ẓāhirī legal school.

I draw on three influential figures, Muḥammad ‘Abduh (d. 1905), Sayyid Quṭb (d. 1966) and ‘Ali Shari‘atī (d. 1977), and ask ‘what does it mean for these figures to ‘associate something’ with God, and how has this ‘association’ been defined?’
A close reading of these figures uncovers a rich field of debate and discussion over the exact nature or identity of shirk. The new realities facing modern Muslim reformers, including in their encounter with Western thought and influence, offered new ways of thinking around shirk, with these new interpretations operating alongside those of pre-modern Islamic thinkers.
