Three towering intellectuals led the way in this process: Markos renieris, spyridon Zambelios and Konstantinos Paparrigopoulos. all three adhered to the since dominant theory of the historical continuity of the greek nation from prehistoric times to the present but held sharply different views concerning the role of greece in the modern world. renieris stressed the european vocation of today’s hellenic culture, given that the foundations of european civilisation were initially hellenic as well. Zambelios put forward an anti-Western view of the nation’s destiny, tinged with theological fanaticism and a mystical historicism. Paparrigopoulos was the consummate historian who emphasised the links between the greek present and the past, chiefly through the medium of language, but...

By examining this issue in the span of fifty years, the authors explore how the national question was entwined with concerns raised about the health of children. They also investigate the various connotations that child health and maternity care carried in the context of liberal and authoritarian governments as well as the wider social and cultural changes that took place during this period. Drawing upon a wide array of primary and secondary sources, they look into the role the initiatives of doctors, social thinkers and state functionaries played in shaping health policy; the impact of medical elites from the western European paradigm; and the gradual professionalization of health care in Greece. The main findings of the analysis regard the ever growing intervention of the state in the medical supervision of childhood, the particular relationship between the philanthropic organizations and the state, as well as the impact the national rivalries and wars had on the intensification of the attempts undertaken for the amelioration of the health of the younger generation

During the Greek Civil War (1946)(1947)(1948)(1949), fought between the Communists and the anticommunists, children were forced to leave their native villages and be interned in the "Childtowns," special institutions developed to house them, so as to be protected from the dangerous "Other": the Greek Communists. The paper probes issues such as the conditions of the children's transportation from their native villages; the manner and the reasons that these relocations were organized; children's living conditions initially in their native villages and, later, in the "Childtowns"; the informants' feelings about their displacement, albeit interpreted through the lens of memory; and the children's ideological formation within the framework of modernization.
