This transformability, which cannot be done in a real fashion show, could open the potential for a new kind of creativity in the fashion industry

This evening suit is from Galanos Fall 1984 collection. The skirt and bodice of the jacket are black and white plaid wool. The jacket sleeves are black mink with leather inserts that contrast the sheen of the leather against the luster of the mink and reduce some of the bulk of the sleeve. The suit is part of The James G. Galanos Archive at Drexel University gifted to Drexel University in 2016. The panorama is an HTML5 formatted version of an ultra-high resolution ObjectVR created from stitched tiles captured with GigaPan technology. It is representative the ongoing research of the DDM, an international, interdisciplinary group of researchers focused on production, conservation and dissemination of new media for exhibition of historic fashion.

This evening gown by Christian Lacroix is from his Fall 1990 collection. It is constructed from silk plain weave, printed with an abstract motif in the bright, deep colors of the local costumes of Lacoix's native Arles, France; and embellished with diamanté and insets of handkerchief edged silk chiffon. Ruffles of pleated silk organza in a neutral bird feather print and also finished with a handkerchief edge, accentuate the asymmetrical draping of the gown. Ruching, controlled by internal drawstrings and ties, creates volume and a slight pouf, a nod to 'le pouf' silhouette Lacroix popularized in his collection for Patou in 1986. Decorative boning on the front of the bodice reflects Lacroix's early education as a costume historian and his sartorial reinterpretatio...

This paper reports on a project that both conserves a rich regional cultural heritage and has structured the content developed during this conservation to be fluidly shared with both the domain and the broader communities. It also examines the varied degrees of acceptance within these communities.

Starting with a thorough elicitation and analysis of the qualitative as well as the functional needs of its users, an evolutionary prototype has been developed for a model of digital archiving that delivers a gratifying web experience, visually and interactively. The prototype is a standards and best practices based information system with the interface designed to be accessible for anyone with World Wide Web experience. An online category thesaurus has been developed to enhance the classification of, and access to, images and data about historic costume. Standards and protocols of the Open Archive Initiative (OAl) and the Museums Online Archive California (MOAC) are being implemented to broaden the user base by making the system portable and extendible. An Archive is Born Drexel University houses the Drexel Historic Costume Collection (DHCC), a teaching collection used for research by students and faculty of the College of Media Arts & Design. The Drexel Historic Costume Collection had its beginning in the 1890's when family members of A.J. Drexel, the founder of the University, began assembling a collection of notable garments, accessories, and textiles. The Collection represents two hundred years of hstoric costume and textile design. Shoes, millinery, parasols, gloves, and other accessories in the Collection present an opportunity to study an entire period ensemble. The Collection is estimated to contain approximately 7000 items, including garments by such notable designers as Charles Worth, Charles James,. Adrian, Chanel, Givenchy, and examples from most contemporary designers.

Our team has created prototype 3D interactive media that will allow the viewer to be an active participant in the exhibition of historic fashion. Rich metadata descriptions of these media ensure their persistent discovery, access and conservation.

Since the late 1800’s museums and schools of fashion design have assembled collections of historic fashion for exhibition and research. Photography was adopted early on by museums looking to disseminate their holdings. Digital imaging and the World Wide Web made access to the images available to anyone with an internet connection. This paper reports on a project using 3D simulations in motion to further enhance the virtual experience; and the significance of accurate motion capture in creating these simulations.
