Su blackwell

Su Blackwell is an English artist who creates fairytale-like book sculptures. She transforms flat pages into three-dimensional objects and constructs entire landscapes filled with mystery. Su finds her books in secondhand book shops and always reads them first before starting to sculpt.

Attending a cultural event (say such a as museum show) can be an educational and enlightening experience. On the day of the show, the FIRST thing that Splendor learned was that her closet contains many strange and wonderful things…spiky Victorian style boots with skull buttons, flowing velvet jackets in gloomy shades of death, ash and midnight and an endless supply of skirts adorned with lacing, zippers and buckles. Su Blackwell: The Book Collector, 2018

Heavy, old books always seem like a mysterious and infinite well of wisdom and imagination for me. That moment, when you pick up a vintage book from a shelf and wipe away a thick layer of dust from its cover, is full of magic. However, the book is so much more than pages full of words it is also a true paper artwork.
