I gave the talk at the Free North last Sunday. The talk was called "Mandela and the Missionary Legacy". Essentially it was looking at how, at almost every major point of his life, Mandela had contact with the Gospel, and the missionary legacy. From his Methodist school, to Clarkbury, Headltown, Fort Hare, during his growing political awareness, even his commitment to armed struggle has an echo in the Presbyterian belief in the overthrow of tyrants, by force if necessary, as well as at Robben Island, to his later contact with Dr Michael Cassidy. The conclusion, however, is far from clear as to what spiritual difference this made upon him, though in terms of common grace it made a huge contribution to a more or less peaceful transition to a democratic South Africa.
