The structure and magnetic properties of the MnBi particles are investigated by means of X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy and magnetometry. Surfactant assisted high energy ball milling results to the samples' degradation even after one hour of milling. In the case of surfactant assisted low energy ball milling the increase of ball milling duration decreases the average particle size while the particles seem to be more separated. The saturation magnetization (M s) was found to decrease for large milling times beginning from 61 Am 2 /kg, while the coercivity (μ 0 H c) increases with the increase of ball milling duration up to 35 min where it reaches 1.62 T and thereafter it decreases.

In this article, the synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles consisting of both Ni x P y and metallic Ni are reported. The nanoparticles have a core/shell structure, and they most probably combine both semiconducting and magnetic properties. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time hybrid material with Ni, as well as 3D self-assembly of such material, is reported.

The hydrocarbide shows a lattice expansion of 5.1%. The Curie 3 2 9 temperature, T , (1198C for the parent alloy) was increased to 3738C. The room temperature saturation magnetisation, M , of the C S 2 21 hydrocarbide is 138.1 Am kg and the average hyperfine field at room temperature is 25.1 T. The magnetic anisotropy of the hydrocarbide changes from an easy cone with an angle of 348 (parent alloy) to a narrower cone with an angle of 268. The anisotropy field, H at room temperature is 5.5 T.

Boron substituted as-spun ribbons are found to have increased coercivity, Hc ≫5 kOe , and small grain size of 60–100 nm. For copper containing samples, the highest coercivity ( Hc =16.3 kOe ) was obtained in as-spun ribbons with x=0.015. In samples without copper the coercivity increased after short annealing ( Hc =12 kOe for x=0.015). The large coercivities are attributed to a fine microstructure consisting mainly of hexagonal TbCu 7 -type phase and a small amount of soft-phase grains. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

The films were deposited by DC magnetron sputtering and annealed in vacuum at various temperatures. The films under investigation were isotropic with high remanence magnetization, maximum coercive field of 8 kOe and a squareness ratio of coercivity higher than 0.9. It was found that the Ar pressure during the deposition is a key factor in controlling the stoichiometry and the structural and magnetic properties of the SmCo films, while the effect of the annealing temperature is crucial in optimizing the magnetic properties of the films.
